[Bug 1539939] Re: missing menu in top panel

2016-05-16 Thread Darrell Kitchen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1532226 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1532226

I have two computers running Ubuntu 16.04. One is an upgrade, the other
is a clean install. On the clean install the menus do not show up on any
of my windows every time I reboot my machine, even with the option
checked in Settings:Appearance:Behavior:Show the menus for a window

However, I have found a temporary workaround for this, but I had to put it in
my Startup Applications. I created a new startup program with the following
parameters:
Name: Reload Unity
Command: unity
Comment: Unity has windowing menu problems so it needs to be reloaded after
bootup

Now when I reboot, I have all my window menus.

It's either the Startup Application or run terminal every time I reboot
to restart unity. On my other machine, the one that I upgraded 14.04 to
16.04, it happens so rarely I just added a custom launcher to Cairo-Dock
that would reload unity.

Having the same issue her with Libreoffice - typing unity into the
terminal does fix it for the session but a bit annoying having to do
this after each reboot.

Same here; I'm also experiencing the same issue described by Vexorian.
Many of my application menus are missing in 16.04 LTS. Thanks for the
temporary fix, Vexorian. Running Unity restores the menus for me, but I
don't know for how long.

Same here, I experience exactly the same as described by vexorian
(vexorian) and Hanine HAMZIOUI (hanynowsky) .

Some further comments:
- when executing 'unity' in a terminal, menus become visible. However, upon
boot, they are gone again.
- my system: Ubuntu 16.04, 64 Bit, GPU: nVidia GeForce 8400M GS

2016-04-23 Thread vexorian
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1532226 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1532226

I am experiencing this.
* Fresh 16.04 install.
* First login menus worked correctly.
* Doesn't seem specific to the menu in the top panel. I am using the option to
make menu bars show in window title bars and permanently.
* This seems to only happen with gnome apps. GIMP, Firefox, Inkscape, Chrome
all work fine. Their menu bars show up in title bars when not maximized and in
top panel when maximized. This fails with gnome apps like gnome-terminal, gedit
or nautilus.
* Using the HUD I can still access the application's menu options.
* Running 'unity' also fixes the problem for me.

Same annoying Bug Here.
Only firefox is untouched!

GTK apps get their menus disappear. I am forced to use the HUD or run $~ unity
command to make them appear again.
I can't believe this bug leaked to the official LTS RElease.

I upgraded from Ubuntu 15.10 to 16.04 LTS yesterday and did an update
today but the bug remains.

** Description changed:

I reported this in January, but it seems to have re-appeared after
yesterday's clean installation. Yesterday, I took the new daily build after I
received news that the alpha release was ready. I installed it after
formatting the drive, and the top menus worked fine. I used Libreoffice writer
a number of times yesterday, and again this morning. I did no further
update+upgrade, but after several sessions, the menus were no longer to be
seen. I can live with it until the final release, but thought I ought to
mention it.

[Bug 1539939] Re: missing menu in top panel

2016-03-21 Thread eros2
I have this issue on both desktop and laptop (16.04 on both).
Observations:
1. Firefox/Thunderbird always have menus, while regular gtk programs (nautilus,
gnome-terminal) are not. So, issue in some gtk component. Not tried qt apps.
2. When I boot PC/laptop and then login - issue mostly present. Then I end
session and relogin - issue gone.
3. When I boot PC/laptop and not login for some time (several minutes) - then
login - no issue.

[Bug 1539939] Re: missing menu in top panel

2016-03-15 Thread Steve
I have received the following email. Could someone explain why this is
necessary?

"Steve ... Did you not see my note on the bug report? The bug was
fixed ages ago. Updating will continue to show the bug. The ONLY cure
is to completely wipe the drive, or the two partitions if you have
anything else on the drive, and do a complete re-install. That bug
carries through all updates and other attempts to get rid if it. I had
to do this over a three months ago, and the bug has not re-appeared.
Currently, there is a bug in ubiquity. You need to use fdisk to get rid
of the swap partition before re-installing."

The xenial beta menus are missing in both top menu bar and window title bar as
in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/1546279

The "unity" command must be run after each start to make them appear,
however sometimes there are some errors and all unity panels disappear.
Thanks!

I have the same behavior. After a clean install of 16.04 beta,
libreoffice works fine menu in main panel show up. After a few times
opening and closing libreoffice the main menu disappears.

After a fresh re-install of 16.04 beta 1, it works again for a few
moments before it disappears again.

apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected xenial

** Description changed:

- I reported this in January, but it seems to have re-appeared after
- yesterday's clean installation. Yesterday, I took the new daily build
- after I received news that the alpha release was ready. I installed it
- after formatting the drive, and the top menus worked fine. I used
- Libreoffice writer a number of times yesterday, and again this morning.
- I did no further update+upgrade, but after several sessions, the menus
- were no longer to be seen. I can live with it until the final release,
- but thought I ought to mention it.
