You are mixing up different things. My "political" decision was to
not bring up any time to implement PSK authentication for IKEv2, as PSK
authentication with passwords is a bad idea. It is discouraged by the
standard, and EAP with server certificates is a perfect replacement.
Almost no one uses IKEv2 PSK with user password in practice. Since
version 1.3.1, the plugin supports PSK for IKEv2 nonetheless with some
restrictions, even if we think that is just a bad idea to use that.

Not supporting IKEv1 is another story; the plugin was implemented when
IKEv1 was not part of the new strongSwan architecture. And until now
just nobody implemented IKEv1 in the NM plugin...

We are aware that XAuth/PSK is still a common setup, and unfortunately
it is best (stupid) practice. If you share that whatever-strong PSK
among users, any user can impersonate the server, and easily intercept
your user password used in XAuth. If you use distinct PSKs for each
user, you most likely need Aggressive Mode.

Beside the not often supported XAuth Hybrid Mode, IKEv1 is just not
well suited for remote access. None of the authentication schemes is
practical and secure. IKEv2 is in many ways superior, and that is why
your IT dept should consider supporting it.

This is why we support the Aggressive Mode/PSK as a client in our
daemon. But just nobody stepped up to extend the NM GUI to configure
it.

Andrian, the fact that libreswan is not available as a plugin to
NetworkManager has nothing to do with any kind of decision. It simply
wasn't done because nobody took the time to package it and make it
available. It *IS* the preferred option for newer NetworkManager
versions, but a lot of things are dependent on having people spend the
time and effort to make it available.

If things are important to you, it is always a good idea to file the bug
reports early and take the steps to make things available, since it's
not feasible for the relatively few developers in Ubuntu to be on top of
everything.

I'm a little surprised myself that network-manager-freeswan isn't
available already (neither is it in Debian from the look of things). It
may be possible to make it available in the supported releases via
backports; someone will need to spend the time to prepare the packages.

That's definitely not true. IKEv1 and PSKs (of arbitrary length) are
supported by the command line version of strongSwan.

It's still a dumb one. Even today in 2017 my IT dept has set up their
VPN with IKEv1 and an 18-char PSK. Which means I can't even use the
command-line version of StrongSwan because the "political decision" is
baked into the VPN daemon.

By all means make it impossible for your SERVER to have a stupid config,
but clients rarely have a choice over the setup they're connecting to.
Conversely the No.1 complaint I hear about StrongSwan server is that
it's hard to set up - I concur, having had to do it myself. But that's
by the by here.

This means there is currently _no_ NetworkManager VPN client for Ubuntu
that supports IKEv1 ; you have to resort to the Shrewsoft client, which
doesn't play well with other clients, doesn't play well with
NetworkManager or it's captive dnsmasq instance.

Is it useful to continue to use the output of a project that allows
"political decisions" to get in the way of actually being useful to the
greatest number of users?

I would argue that the choice of StrongSwan over LibreSwan here is
harming adoption of Ubuntu in the enterprise (presuming, that is, that
LibreSwan has no such political opinions baked into it and you can
actually use it's NM plugin to connect to most VPNs). If LibreSwan is
good enough for RedHat and the GNOME team maintain a NM plugin for it
(as they do), would that not be a better choice for Ubuntu?

to clear out languishing items in the sponsorship queue today.

Zesty currently ships network-manager-strongswan 1.4.1-1 so I presume
this is now fixed in Zesty? Could someone please confirm before pushing
SRUs?

For Xenial and Yakkety, the proposed fix sounds mostly OK (I haven't
looked in detail) but the bug needs SRU information and the patch
updated for SRUs. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure for details.

I'm trying to get an initial response to as many outstanding requests
today as I can, so I'll move on for now. But I'll mark this as one to

Hi all. I've played around with Ryan's PPA to get the strongswan
connection to my work place working under Mint 18 (xenial). Here are my
observations based on a fresh Mint 18 install, after doing all updates
and upgrades that were available.

The following works to get my connection running:
1. Get the company .crt and import it to my keychain (I chose always to unlock 
it when prompted)
2. sudo apt-get install libstrongswan strongswan strongswan-charon 
strongswan-libcharon strongswan-starter libstrongswan-extra-plugins 
libcharon-extra-plugins libstrongswan-standard-plugins 
network-manager-strongswan
3. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:raharper/bugfixes
4. sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
5. Set up the VPN via the network manager. I enter the IP, my EAP username and 
password (I chose to store for all users). I checked "Request an inner IP 
address", and I provided an additional DNS server and search domain.

After this, the connection works. However, updates to strongswan are
available now, since some packages are still version 5.3.5-1ubuntu3. If
I choose to update strongswan at this point, it will result in the
removal of libstrongswan-standard-plugins and libstrongswan-extra-
plugins, because they have unmet dependencies.

I managed to install those dependencies doing the following steps:
1. wget 
http://ftp.ch.debian.org/debian/pool/main/i/iptables/libip4tc0_1.6.0-4_amd64.deb
2. wget 
http://ftp.ch.debian.org/debian/pool/main/libg/libgcrypt20/libgcrypt20_1.7.3-2_amd64.deb
3. sudo dpkg -i libip4tc0_1.6.0-4_amd64.deb
4. sudo dpkg -i libgcrypt20_1.7.3-2_amd64.deb
5. sudo apt-get -f install
6. sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

This upgrades everything to 5.3.5-1ubuntu5, but the VPN will not connect
still. I have pasted the relevant parts of /var/log/syslog here:

confirm that "IPSEC/IKEv2 (strongswan)" option is now present in nm-
applet.

But I'm not sure how can I configure L2TP VPN like this http://freel2tpvpn.com/
This VPN (as well as our company one I need to use) has short secret but the 
nm-applet enforces that pre-shared secret must be at least 20 characters long. 
Where does this requirement come from?

I would love to test it out, but I don't know how to apply the patches.
I have a Linux Mint 18 installation which exhibits the symptoms in this
bug report.

If anyone can aid me in what to do I'll be happy to help out.

It certainly seems possible via SRU, however, the best course of action is
to get
some testing done on the current packages;  If we have someone who can
validate
the changes work and connect to their VPN then it'll be much faster to get
the changes
included and verified.

I created a debdiff for the 1.4.0 upgrade.
Please note the following tho:
NetworkManager Applet 1.4.0
This version is compatible with current versions of NetworkManager.
Also requires two patches to charon-nm that are not yet part of any 
strongSwan releases (9e74a0952e and f201d86deb).

So we need to integrate the patches in the current strongswan version
(and update it eventually).

"finished".

For those trying to make IKEv2 connections... the ShrewSoft VPN GUI and
tools work.

sudo apt-get install ike-qtgui

It would be very much preferable to have something integrated with NM
working properly though. Having your VPN drop because you closed the
wrong window is... frustrating.

I have also been unable to find a solution to this 2 month old problem
and it's very discouraging since it worked without problem in the 15.10.
I've been unable to discover the break point as it seems that all the
version should be working so I'm starting to wonder if it's something as
simple as a permissions problem.

Is there any way users can go around this issue and configure the VPN
connection in e.g. a config file or using a terminal command, until this
issue has been resolved?
