Have set the blank SSD to IDE and ACHI mode, used defaults in Rufus to create the USB stick for installation. The display that is attached is a 1080p screen. So, I don't think it is a scaling issue, which shouldn't affect GRUB installation anyway. I have a 4K display. The first thing I do after Ubuntu boots from Live USB is to adjust the scale factor to 200%. The installer crashed at every attempt. Found out for me, that if GNOME uses scaling 200% the installer crashed at loading of the images which say Welcome to Ubuntu, etc. Try using a 100% DISPLAY scaling and no issues during installing. I think it is not related to UEFI... It is related to GPT disk type. Beacuse my friend installed in uefi mode but it doesn't have gpt disk type. I'm experiencing this same problem. I can't install Ubuntu 18.04 or Kubuntu 18.04.
