Desktop team NAKed maintaining it, and it looks like reverse- dependencies would need changes (and for one, having written the nm- applet patch, I rather this be removed to use standard status icon code than appindicators). It was pointed some cycles ago that going with an hostile fork and making it incompatible with the existing implementation would complicate any transition and the adoption of the new stack, seems that's where we are. Speaking from a Desktop perspective that's a transition that isn't going to bring us much and that is more work than we want to sign for at the moment, especially that the new stack lacks real world usage/testing at the moment. @khurshid-alam, the problem is stuff in main that depends on ayatana, and can't migrate until the archive is self-consistent. I'm not asking to transition universe to ayatana (it can take all the time needed, if somebody does the work), but rather asking to move ayatana to main and appindicator to universe. The appindicator package is badly maintained in Debian, and has a considerable delta in Ubuntu, while the fork is maintained by the upstream author in Debian, and will allow us to sync lots of packages and ease the downstream maintain work. Appindicator is dead ? Since when? Ubuntu and all other variants use it. Unity uses it. I fear deprecating libappindicator in favor of libayatana-appindicator won't be easy task in unity and Gnome. In-fact it's a huge task for Unity.
