You would remove:

  blacklist ath10k_pci

from /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and then reboot.

Great, thank you. I will try this out. For my reference, how would I re-
enable the built in wifi? Thanks again

2020-07-20 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It might help to disable the built-in wifi. Try doing it in the BIOS. If
that doesn't work then you can disable the kernel driver of the built-in
wifi by adding a line:

  blacklist ath10k_pci

to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and then reboot.

[Bug 1887724] Re: [amdgpu] Xorg freeze

2020-07-20 Thread Blaise Mariner
Funny you say that there has been a problem with the Wifi on this
machine since it was solely running Windows 10. Best Buy could not fix
it and did not want to cheaply replace it. Sometimes (unable to
reproduce) the wifi loses the ability to detect networks and I would
have to reboot in order to reset the wifi connection. No freeze or
anything would occur. I have a USB-antennae that works well and works
around the problem, so most of the time now I am unaware if the internal
wifi connection stops. Thank you for the different kernel version link,
I will explore that.

2020-07-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sorry I failed to notice you can't replace the graphics card as it's a
laptop...

If that error is some other PCIe device then it might be just the wifi
card which is easy to disable or replace.

[Bug 1887724] Re: [amdgpu] Xorg freeze

2020-07-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
The only explanation for a freeze I can see in the log of comment #4 is
this recurring kernel/hardware problem:

Jul 16 12:06:21 bmariner-Inspiron-7375 kernel: pcieport :00:01.1: AER:
Corrected error received: :00:01.0
Jul 16 12:06:21 bmariner-Inspiron-7375 kernel: pcieport :00:01.1: AER: PCIe
Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Data Link Layer, (Transmitter ID)
Jul 16 12:06:21 bmariner-Inspiron-7375 kernel: pcieport :00:01.1: AER:
device [1022:15d3] error status/mask=1000/6000
Jul 16 12:06:21 bmariner-Inspiron-7375 kernel: pcieport :00:01.1: AER:
[12] Timeout

which is about vendor "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD]" device
"Raven/Raven2 PCIe GPP Bridge [6:0]". So I think that's related to the
graphics card.

If you can then try a different graphics card or even just a different
kernel version from:

  https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=M;O=D

2020-07-18 Thread Blaise Mariner
Thank you, I was able to do it with the sudo more FILENAME command. I
found a couple of crash reports on the site. blueman, gnome-shell, gdb,
nautilis. Everything listed except the blueman crashes happened before
my switch to cinnamon. I am unable to access the data, but I will search
the web.

You need to be superuser to view that file, so run this first:

  sudo -s

>From the following /var/crash, there are many files. I ran the most
recent one. It resulted in a "Sorry, Ubuntu 20.04 has experienced an
internal error. Send problem report to developers?" message. I selected
Send but did not receive an ID for the newly-created bug. Thus I assume
the message I received was step 1 failing. Going to step 2, I was unable
to open contents of the whoopsie-id file. I will move on to step three.

[Bug 1887724] Re: [amdgpu] Xorg freeze

2020-07-15 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also... It sounds like some part of the system may have crashed. To help
us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.
