Daniel, on Feb 2 I have changed to "Ubuntu on Wayland" at login as you suggested and up till now I have had no issues with freezing. But yesterday after few months I needed to record my screen and found out that SimpleScreenRecorder program does not capture video if wayland is used, so I switched back to X session selecting "Ubuntu" session at login recorded screen. Today I have just forgotten to changed back to wayland. And the result? Today using X session and Ubuntu freezed and the only way to get it back was hard reset. So your theory of my problem being related to "X session" on my laptop may have some true in it. I just wanted to inform you about this. Thanks for all that. It certainly looks like a freeze because gnome- shell is still running when you reboot the machine. As a potential workaround, please try 'Ubuntu on Wayland' which is an option on the login screen just before you enter your password. Today happened again. I was working with remote desktop Remmina to access my work-computer using Windows and suddenly mouse icon disappeared and keyboard stopped responding. This time background musing running on my Ubuntu host did not stop playing, it looks like laptop did not completely freeze. I was also able to recover (without hard reset): 1. Ctrl+Alt+F3 and get into console, logged in. 2. Search for remmina process: ps aux | grep remmina 3. Kill the remmina process: kill -9 4. Ctrl+Alt+F4 and I was back and desktop was responding normally. I could start Remmina and now working without a problem. I have now disabled the HideTopBar extension, but it is going to be difficult to find out if this is the cause of the problem, because freezes happens sometimes one's per month. I don't know if I can live without it such a long time. :-) I have reported problem upstream to HideTopBar extension developer: https://github.com/mlutfy/hidetopbar/issues/266 hope to get some feedback soon. It may really be hidetop...@mathieu.bidon.ca Gnome Shell extension. Now that you mention it again I opened up Extension application and try playing with the extension and when pressing the new shortcut key (that was not set until now), whole screen froze and I was requested to hard reset the laptop (red rectangle on print-screen). I rebooted the laptop and I am playing again with extension keyboard shortcuts, but now everything works fine. I am playing it for a while setting all kind of setting and works fine. I still don't have reproducible steps, something just triggers the freeze, but I can't figure it out what that is. I have collected files like requested in #22 and I am attaching them. Maybe from the logs you can see if there is the same pattern. Few minutes ago this Remmina freeze has happened again. Remmina not responding, no keyboard was responding. I was able to move mouse, but mouse clicks have had no effect. Interesting talking about devil... It happened right now. Remmina suddenly froze. This time I also lost mouse (no mouse pointer) and after few seconds also music stopped playing on my PC, this indicates this time whole system froze. @Daniel, I installed deb package for "performance" fix, you have written in #22. But since 18th November freeze did not appear anymore. If it does I will try to collect info from #22. @Vinod, did you try to install deb package from bug 1849142 from #14. Last week I updated ubuntu from 20.04 to 18.04. Now I have Remmina freezing after inactivity and will unfreeze after a while like 3-4 minutes. Reboot again and then run: journalctl -b-1 > freshprevboot.txt lspci -kv > lspci.txt and attach the resulting text files here. 3. Please also try uninstalling or disabling these extensions via the Extensions app: 'hidetop...@mathieu.bidon.ca' 'user-theme-gnome-extension' then log out and in again, just in case either of those are the problem. If your mouse pointer still works then that means only the gnome-shell process has frozen or crashed. The mouse pointer keeps moving because it's managed by the Xorg process. So next we need more information about the graphics hardware and to check for historical crashes. Please run this command to collect more system info: apport-collect 1903986 Then to help us find the cause of any crash please follow these steps: 1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run: ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug. 2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? Sebastien, now I have investigated "-b" switch little bit more and I see "-b 1" is probably not correct switch you have requested, but correct should with "minus 1", so "-b -1". Today computer freeze happened again. 1. I have had no choose but to hard press power-off button. 2. I have exeucted "journalctl -b 0" > journalctl_0.txt 3. I have executed "journalctl -b 161 > journalctl161.txt 4. I tried "journalctl -b 1 >journalctl_1.txt" like you suggested, but currently I see data in it from "May 1st". Command "journalctl -b 0" looks like there are data from last start-up, but "journalctl -b 1" in my case returns data from "April 2020", that is why I have searched for the biggest number to get that date data. Today happened again. I executed "journalctl -b X" where X is the number I was searching today's date. Executing "journalctl -b 167" I have got: Data from the specified boot (+167) is not available: No such boot ID in journal Then I executed: "journalctl -b 166" > journalctl_166.txt "journalctl -b 165" > journalctl_165.txt "journalctl -b 164" > journalctl_164.txt a) Today I have force power-off button on laptop because Remmina froze. b) Another reboot I did because I have lost WiFi connection (this was normal restart).
