I am using an ATI Radeon HD 3870 with the latest version of fglrx from ATI's website. The screen flickers quite badly whe I start anything that utilises OpenGL (Google Earth, for example). Also it happens when I start System - Preferences - Display or Wine. This also causes any music that is playing to stop while the flickering is happening. If I leave it for a minute then it will recover itself. I am willing to send anything that might be of use to help fix the problem (xorg.conf for example). Just give the word. I am using an old acer laptop Model : Acer Travelmate 3210 (Singapore) Video : ATI Mobility Radeon X700 Driver: ati proprietary driver The screen flickers after un-hibernating my computer. or after I press Ctrl-Alt-Fn let's say to play around the console. Then after I get back to ctrl-alt-f7 for the x windows the screen flickers. What I do is to logout then login again. It seems to work after that. But I want to find a more permanent/stable solution. By the way I am a noob to linux I just received my free cd last week. Update : Micheal - Glad that worked for you, unfortunately my X wouldn't start back up with the free driver so I rolled back(I didn't try very hard to get it working since im relatively new to linux and i don't have that much extra time). As for the problem itself, I am quite certain it resides souly in the fglrx driver. I updated to the new version few days ago and not only did it not fix the problem, it made it worst (well sort of). The effect remains the same but now it flickers even with Compiz off (Metacity instead). Micheal Do you mean the proprietary driver from Ubuntu or the driver from the ATI web site? I don't think this is a bug in compiz. It's presumably a bug in ATI's proprietary graphics drivers, which is brought out by using a compositing window manager (anything doing advanced effects with windows). I experienced the same. The screen flickering when I use any OpenGL application, example screen savers or mplayer with -vo gl or -vo gl2. I have ATI 9600Pro and I use the restricted driver.
