[Bug 221677] Re: unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4
I am closing this bug report based on the original reporters comments that he is no longer experiencing this issue. see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/221677/comments/10 . For those who still have an issue, please verify you have the same hardware as the original bug reporter otherwise open a new bug report. Additionally, if you open a new bug report regarding this issue, please make sure you have tested against the actively developed kernel. The Jaunty Jackalope Alpha series was recently released which contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the newHJaunty Jackalope Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . Also make sure your bug report is against the 'linux' source package. Starting with the Hardy release, the kernel source package naming convention changes from 'linux-source-2.6.x' to just 'linux'. The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . It contains the 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test and verify if this is still an issue. The status is being set to Incomplete until we receive further feedback. Thanks. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Incomplete -- unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221677 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 221677] Re: unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback. ** Tags added: cft-2.6.27 -- unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221677 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 221677] Re: unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4
GREAT NEWS !!! I thought my ide cable could have been 40-wire instead of 80-wire. IT WAS!! NOW I GOT A 80-WIRE CABLE AND EVERYTHING WORKS GREAT WITH THE STANDARD (NEW) MODULES !!! I tried four different cables, the amazing thing is that they all were 40-wire, I can't believe it!!! The bug is now solved for me, thanks to everybody! p.s. the only way to discover if your ide cable is 40-wire or 80-wire is that the 80-wire cable has got coloured pins (blue-mother board , gray- slave and black-master) More suggestions: I suggest not to use cable select, but to set your hd to master (if it is master) and connect it to the black pin of the cable, os slave and connect it to the gray pin. I suggest, moreover, to set manually the speed of the hard disk (in my case ultra dma 6) and the PIO mode (4 to me). Who knows, maybe the bug affects via chipsets when they work in auto mode... -- unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221677 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Bug confirmed. Same error in syslog, and the system was unbootable. I hadn't that problem with gutsy, nor feisty (Installed in the same month in the same HDD). I checked the HDD pins but they were ok. I just changed the IDE cable and everything worked fine. [Bug 221677] Re: unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4
i confirm the bug. i've tried to replace the cable and to invert the position of the drive, then removing\changing position of the jumper... no way it works... When i prompt to install hardy I CAN SEE all partitions and all drives, but neither the live cd either hardy installed are able to mount the IDE drive or its partitions. I can see only a SCSI device... notably if i install gParted, it recognizes the ide drive and its partitions, but can't access 'em. I'm back to Gutsy now, please keep me informed. A BIG thankyou Don, for doggedly pursuing this. I would never have worked this one out. I encountered the same problem yesterday. I have 2 IDE drives. In my case, the cable quality was the problem, and it actually started off being an intermittent problem. Sometimes the system could boot up, but even when it did, it couldn't read the 2nd IDE drive. Maybe this issue should be publicised on the Hardy release page? - if you have any problems with reading disks check that the IDE disk cables and disk jumper settings are perfect! -- unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221677 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 221677] Re: unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4
I can confirm this bug: After upgrading to 8.04, the kernel doesn't recognize one of my hard disks (the one with the root partition on it) any more (a seagate IDE disk). Booting with the old (2.6.22) kernel works fine. It's not recognized by the live CD either. The other disk (also IDE) is displayed alright, all partitions show up correctly in /dev/disk/* as sdd* as expected. The disk without the partition table _does_ show up as a block device as /dev/sdc, though. Re: [Bug 221677] Re: unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4
I only filed the bug yesterday. I'm sure they have more urgent problems, so I don't expect fast progress on this. I'm just going to try to offload everything from the IDE to an external drive, then repartition it using 8.0.4. I really want to get this resolved. Lemmy <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: Same problem here using 8.04 final on 32 Bit AMD Athlon XP 2000. At the moment I can't use Hardy Heron at all :-( -- unable to read IDE partition table under 8.0.4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/221677 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug. Status in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I have a 250G SATA and a 320G IDE drive. I use the SATA for root, /boot, and /home. I use the IDE for backups and transient data. Under a fresh 8.04 install (release candidate around April 19-20), I get "unable to read partition table" errors... it treats my WD320 IDE drive as a SATA (expected behaviour, I hear). /dev/sda is visible, but /dev/sda[1234] are not (under the older releases, these were /dev/hda[1234]). Next, I re-install 7.10, no problem, works fine under 7.10 Next, I re-install 6.06, no problem, works fine under 6.06 Next, I re-install 8.0.4, install all the latest updates, still unable to read partition table. So, this is a new problem under 8.0.4. I can still detect and read every partition of the IDE drive if I use the older releases, but I can't use the IDE drive under 8.0.4. This means that this isn't a hardware error. Is there anything I can do to fix this, or should I wait it out for a few days hoping for a fix to be released, or should I revert to 7.10 and wait for 8.0.5? For the long term, I need both drives. Any info or suggestions? Thanks. Below, I've pasted some info out of /var/log/messages and dmesg.
