Re: [Bug 224740] Re: update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel
Hello Michael... This is the first time I have been contacted (I am quite happy that you contacted me). Here's what I did. I got tired of messing around with the problem, so I ordered a disk w/ 8.10. I backed up my files, and re-installed. The only thing. I have this Belkin F5D7051 wireless USB Network adapter, and Ubuntu won't boot when that's plugged in, interestingly enough. It may or may not work after after startup is complete. I've messed around with this along time too... seen a lot of headaches on the web... and I may just part with the stick altogether and get a different one. I do want to thank you for contacting me. Wow... it's amazing. The most recent duplicate is from 08.2008 but no clear direction about how to reproduce this issue has been provided. [Bug 224740] Re: update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel
If you're experiencing problems when using kwifimanager, please file a bug report against the kwifimanager package. The problem with update-manager and synaptic is most likely bug #237325 in the libgksu package, which has been addressed in the hardy-proposed archive for inclusion in the 8.04.1 point release; as a workaround it's recommended that you edit your /etc/hosts file by hand so that your hostname is resolvable (examples are given in that bug report, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgksu/+bug/237325/comments/2). Indeed, this is something that should be fixed even for users who have fixed sudo/libgksu packages installed, because being unable to resolve your hostname can cause any number of other subtle problems for network clients (though not, to the best of my knowledge, for network management tools such as kwifimanager). -- update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224740 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 224740] Re: update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel
Dropping the milestone; I don't see how this upgrade error could be a grub or ucf bug, the debconf frontend simply isn't there when it's supposed to be. This is not a widely reported failure, we shouldn't spend more time spinning our wheels on it without some indication of how to reproduce it. ** Changed in: grub (Ubuntu) Target: ubuntu-8.04.1 = None -- update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224740 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 224740] Re: update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel
Thank you for the direction. Apparently my many problems were a result of the unable to resolve your hostname mentioned above. After following directions in but #237325, all function are now working. [Bug 224740] Re: update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel
I began using Ubuntu 7.04 approximately 9 months ago and upgraded to 7.10 properly. Prior to upgrade to 8.04 everything I will talk about was working properly. My equipment is Toshiba Satelite, Model Name A85-S1072, Description Microsoft® Windows® XP Home, Intel® Celeron® M Processor 360J, 256MB, 40GB (5400 RPM), DVD-ROM/CD-RW, 15” TruBriteTM XGA, ATI MOBILITYTM RADEON® 9000, 802.11b/g, Wireless function no longer works. I use KWiFiManager to access and control my wireless function. I am unable to connect to my router. The system does recognize my network, but when trying to connect all I get is no access point and Local IP – unavailable. Update Manager notifies updates required but when install selected a Starting Administrative application indication shows up and then times out and the update manager hangs up without installing the identified updates. Synaptic Package Manager does not work - the same Starting Administrative application indication mentioned above occurs. While the Terminal application works for updating the system, I am not all that comfortable with my own knowledge with this application. This is what does function: Email – OK Internet – OK OpenOffice application – OK Some Video but not all – OK How should I proceed? -- update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224740 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 224740] Re: update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel
Sorry, what errors are you referring to? If you are seeing other problems unrelated to this upgrade error message, these should be filed as separate bug reports. As far as switching back to 7.10, downgrading is not supported; the only way to switch from 8.04 to 7.10 would be by reinstalling. But we of course want to make sure 8.04 is usable for as many people as possible, so an explanation of the errors you're seeing would be appreciated.
Since my last communication (2008-05-08) I have had nothing but errors with ubuntu 8.04. How can I get back to 7.10 which worked fine for me? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm so frustrated, I'm ready to go back to Microsoft. -- update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224740 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Michael, you milestoned this. Did you hear about other instances of this bug? Is it important enough for .1? [Bug 224740] Re: update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel
Thank you for the assistance. I am not all that knowledgeable about the failure. When I went to update the program, the failure occurred and instructed me to forward the bug notice. I have not experienced any problems with UBUNTU 8.04 since installation. I don 't know if I have a problem. -- update-grub fails during upgrade of the kernel https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224740 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
