[Bug 238507] Re: Most Gnome applications stop working
Ahh, sorry about not responding to your question earlier. In short, I do keep my system up to date, although I don't plan on upgrading to 8.10.This problem has not re-occurred since August, fortunately. Part of me wonders if this happened after an upgrade, without logging out and logging back in. I don't honestly recall. So yes, closing this bug is fine by me. -- Most Gnome applications stop working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238507 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238507] Re: Most Gnome applications stop working
We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help. ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Invalid -- Most Gnome applications stop working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238507 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238507] Re: Most Gnome applications stop working
Hi leon-p-smith, Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com) If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Thanks in advance. The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having. ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- Most Gnome applications stop working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238507 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238507] Re: Most Gnome applications stop working
Ok, the exact same problem has happened again. I haven't rebooted yet, and I'm willing to forgo rebooting this machine for an indeterminate amount of time, though I don't know how long before I'll really need my machine back. If somebody is interested in instructing me in what steps I could take to best provide debugging information for this problem, I am all ears. However, exploiting opportunity will require prompt attention. The only GUI applications that appears to work is the file manager and Compiz. I can successfully start a VNC server and connect to it, however no graphics comes through the VNC connection, other than a mouse cursor. SSH access works fine, however. For starters, is there a way I can change process limits of a running process, e.g. /proc/PID/limits?, so that I might get some more core files? Is there some way I can do this through /proc/PID/? I say this because there is a visual difference on the screen of what happens when I start applications from the file manager versus starting applications otherwise. I am completely up to date, and have upgraded my kernel since the last time this happened in June. -- Most Gnome applications stop working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238507 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238507] Re: Most Gnome applications stop working
Also, on what basis is this believed to be a NVIDIA driver bug? I am a programmer (Haskell, Scheme mostly) and I'm naturally skeptical... I suppose it might be, but I am certainly not convinced that's the case. Honestly, it feels much more a problem with GTK. (that might somehow be related to the NVIDIA driver, but I don't see any reason to believe that is the case.) Compiz is still doing it's fancy effects, dimming applications that aren't responding and fading in and out windows.I just lost the use of the graphical file manager, though, when I tried to hit the up button to ascend into the parent directory I was (successfully) viewing. The only GUI application that appears to be working at the moment is AIM, and it is displaying my friends list. However, trying to send myself a message on another computer doesn't do anything, though I can send a message to the broken computer and have it displayed. The way the whole sequence of events unfolds is that one application stops working, and the problem slowly grows and infects other applications as I try to use them. And, unlike the previous two events, I wasn't running gnome tali at all. -- Most Gnome applications stop working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238507 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
