Ahh, sorry about not responding to your question earlier. In short, I do keep my system up to date, although I don't plan on upgrading to 8.10. This problem has not re-occurred since August, fortunately.
Part of me wonders if this happened after an upgrade, without logging out and logging back in. I don't honestly recall.
