I just tried -21. It seems to work fine. I have an NVIDIA gfx card and
it booted into X at my normal resolution.

The booting regression is solved for me, but 2.6.24-20.38 kernel gave another
regression for some of us : the display falls back in low-resolution (graphics

[Bug 251344] Re: Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot

2008-08-11 Thread Petar Velkovski
Ok, just to be clear. I had to reinstall nvidia drivers with EnvyNG
every time i changed kernel. From 2.6.24-16 - 2.6.24-17,
2.6.24-17-2.6.24-18 etc. So I personally don't consider this as a bug,
but as something that has to be done every time we switch to a newer
kernel build. If this is a bug, I presume it is connected with EnvyNG,
not with the kernel build.

Regarding to the previous post, I have never had to reinstall the nvidia

It has seamlessly worked throughout all kernel updates until -20. I have

2008-07-29 Thread Sebastian Bengtsson
After installing the new proposed kernel (2.6.24-20.38) the system boots
successfully. (Yay!)

However now my graphics card is not recognized. After a lot of flickering X
finally starts but with only 800x600 resolution.
When booting 2.6.24-19 the graphics works fine.

I guess that the graphicsproblems should go into a new bug(?) but this means I
am still not using 2.6.24-20 kernel.

[Bug 251344] Re: Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot

2008-07-29 Thread Sebastian Bengtsson
After disabling proprietary nvidia driver xorg at normal resolution
without problems.

However there are some kind of issue remaining as the proprietary
hardware drivers guide (jockey-gtk) now doesn't recognize there is an
nvidia card present for which a proprietary driver (nvidia-legacy in
this case) could be installed.

uname:
Linux molly 2.6.24-20-generic #1 SMP Mon Jul 28 13:49:52 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux
lspci:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV15DDR [GeForce2 Ti]
(rev a4)

I am sorry if this is going off topic. But it appears that the new
kernel introduces some minor regressions.

Happened to me too, wouldn't boot, except for a blank blank screen.

But why use a PPA to resolve the issue? Why not just boot into the old
'19' kernel, remove the '20' kernel, and untick backports under software
sources.

You can boot to the old 19 of curse and remove proposed from your
sources - proposed is for people willing to test new features. And thats
the same with Tim's PPA. If you're willing to test it, do so, otherwise
it could be wiser to remove proposed, of course.

Or simply edit Default = 0 -- 2 in menu.lst, if you don't delete the

From terminal: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst look for Default...

[Bug 251344] Re: Hardy proposed 2.6.24-20-generic kernel update will not boot

2008-07-28 Thread sergio.callegari
For more than 3 months now some people have been complaining about
ununtu's 2.6.24 kernels causing random freezes to a few systems (see the
many threads that come out googling for hardy + freeze). This
particularly nasty bug is still unfixed.

It was noticed that 2.6.25 kernels did not have the issue. Conseqently
the porting of a 2.6.25 kernel to hardy was asked many times (for
instance see ubuntu brainstorm).

However, porting a 2.6.25 kernel to hardy was always excluded as a big
jump in the dark in spite of most major distros and a huge number of
users using it routinely. It was said that the right way to go was to
backport pieces of 2.6.25 as patches to 2.6.24.

And now we have this incident proving that also the cherry-picking is no
less a jump in the dark. At this point please rethink the kernel
policies and let ubuntu follow the normal kernel updates provided by
kernel.org. Or please, do it at least whenever moving to a well tested
plain 2.6.x.y is easier than trying to patch-again an already very-much-
patched and only-tested-by-ubuntu-users 2.6.x-k.

2008-07-28 Thread guna
same problem. Will the kernel that Tim refers to coming out in a couple
of days get auto updated while I am running on 2.6.24.19 or is there
something else I need to do to jump from .19 to .21 ?

BTW I had installed eclipse and it is not to be found anymore (says its
not installed after I boot with 2.6.24.19) - is this normal for programs
to be tied to the kernel and distribution (I thought they should not
be). Will a fresh get of the program conflict with any future kernel
update ?

2008-07-26 Thread Petar Velkovski
The smb kernel from http://people.ubuntu.com/~smb/bug251344/ also works
for me but my processor is single core AMD Athlon XP. Also in my
previous post when I suspected that EnvyNG is the problem I didn't make
the system work with generic but with the 386 kernel.

To avoid any confusion please give us information what kernels should we
test? Generic, smb, 386? Is only generic affected with this bug, or all
of them? Also tell us if there are any log (debug??) files we should
send to this post and how to obtain them.

I just wanted to add that I am using a Radeon 9600xt (256mb) graphics card with
the latest ATI Catalyst 8.7 installed via Method 2 on this page
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Hardy_Installation_Guide
Also, I installed the ATI Catalyst 8.7 while using the 2.6.24-19-generic
kernel.  Everything loaded perfectly, and I rebooted twice just to make sure;
been using 2.6.24-20-generic for a little over 2 hours, no problems.

So, it appears that Stefan Bader's fix linux-
image-2.6.24-20-generic_2.6.24-20.37smb4_i386.deb is working for AMD
processors (Athlon, Sempron, etc.) as far as getting the kernel to boot.

2008-07-26 Thread Raeff
I have two machines to test.

1.) Old FujitsuSiemens Lifebook E Series
- Intel Pentium III-M 1 GHz
- 512 MB RAM
- Intel 830 Mobile Chipset
- ATI Radeon Mobility M6

This machine works with -19-generic, but not with -20-generic (neither
the original 20.37 from hardy-proposed, nor the 20.37smb4 as posted
above). The machine hangs like the others at Checking 'hlt'
instruction... OK.

2.) New FujitsuSiemens Lifebook S Series
- Intel Core 2 Duo 2 GHz (T7250)
- 2 GB RAM
- Intel Mobile 965 Express Chipset
- Intel GMX X3100 (chipset integrated)

That machine works with -19-generic and with -20-generic (from hardy-
proposed).

If there is anything I could test on these machines please let me know.

Kind regards, Bernhard.

2008-07-25 Thread Ripps818
