On a system upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10: Using any screensaver (gnome-screensaver ot xscreensaver) screen saver starts OK, and can be stopped within a few minutes. If I only get back to my desktop a couple of hours later, either mouse movement or keyboard action stops screen saver, and I am left with a blank screen, mouse cursor still shows, but no icons or panels. Only way out is via power cycle. Tried changing USB keyboard to PS2 - no improvement. This did not happen under 8.04. Only workaround I found was to uninstall both gnome-screensaver and xscreensaver. Now screen goues black, but both mouse and/or keyboard restore working desktop. Please forgive me if I am insufficiently informative. I am Linux- challenged; Sorry! I've also encountered a lockup when selecting a screen saver on Ubuntu 8.04. The mouse still moves around but I cannot click on anything. I am unable to switch to a VT or kill X via CTRL+ALT+Backspace but I can ssh in. When the machine is frozen, I can ssh into it from another computer and top reports that the compiz.real and Xorg processes are occupying almost 100% of my CPUs. The braid process is also using a small amount. Killing the Xorg process dumps me back to the gdm login screen and all is well again. Selecting braid or xrayswarm seem to consistently lock up the application for me. bluespell, can you try something? I clicked on a different screen saver after my computer locked up. Nothing appeared to happen but after about 10 or 15 minutes, it became responsive again. It appears that instead of locking up, it was just running really really slow.
