provisionally marking as invalid, seems to be an alsa kernel module bug
that seems to be fixed in 2.6.27 release

** Changed in: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Invalid

There is a related (i'm not sure if it's the same bug) bugreport here

[Bug 258811] Re: pulseaudio crashes after a few minutes: memblock.c: Memory block too large for pool

2008-08-19 Thread Dinxter
the snd-hda-intel module gives messages,

[ 3402.201978] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC883, trying auto-probe from
BIOS...
[ 3422.26] hda-intel: Invalid position buffer, using LPIB read method
instead.

though none of these correspond with the timing of the death of
pulseaudio, direct alsa output works fine too

perhaps an alsa module issue, but the problem only seems to affect
pulseaudio. i cant find any more relevant errors. Passing the model
option to snd-hda-intel doesnt seem to change anything either. the chip
is Realtek ALC883 8-channel hd audio codec on an asus m3a motherboard.
