Upgrading from another distro with a fully working GNOME 2.26 installation, now running Ubuntu 'K' with it's 2.27 (about to be 2.28 packages), I am experiencing this problem. This hardware GNOME different distro, the cosmos screensaver deactivated on mouse movement, but now on Ubuntu (same hardware, same almost everything) it requires a keystroke to banish the screensaver. Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project. Unable to reproduce this either in Karmic or Jaunty. Awe, oh well. I'm not sure I am convinced it is hardware specific. People with nvidia, ati, and intel drivers have all reported it in the comments. I just did a quick test because it used to happen on my machine but doesn't anymore. However, it's one of the first things my wife ran into on the machine I recently built her. SpirographX seems to correctly respond to mouse movement. The screensaver Pacman does not. Make sure you wait for the screensaver to run for a little bit because if you move it soon it will work correctly. Actually i did wait before triggering the release [ since i was testing another power management karmic bug ] could you be more specific , how long to wait for the bug to arise? *could you give a list of screensavers that have this problem* . There is no pacman in Karmic . ...how long to wait for the bug to arise? I did not measure it, but about a minute seems to consistently reproduce the behavior for me using Pacman which, as you stated, is not a default screensaver. Regarding the hardware, could it be related to using a USB mouse vs. a PS/2 mouse? I am using a USB mouse but I would think that would be abstracted to the screensaver. Unfortunately I do not have a test machine available at the moment, so I cannot help test in Karmic. Thanks for looking into this for being a papercut, mac_v. Ramon, I think that this bug definately fits the description of a usability bug that a new user can run into very early in his or her introduction to Ubuntu, since this affects a significant number of screensavers, (all screen savers that use opengl it seems). However, I'm not sure if it would be considered trivally fixable which is the kind of bugs that they are looking for. I have nominated it for the hundred paper cuts project, so that it can be reviewed. I can confirm this bug exists in Jaunty also, dated 2009-04-13. Running on a PIII, 866MHz cpu with 512MB ram, moving the mouse will not release the screensaver when using GLText. Installed xubuntu 8.10 on my laptop over the weekend and it has the same issue. Mouse movement alone doesn't keep the screen saver from activating and once activated the screen saver won't turn off with mouse movement either. Same problem. Although, I've also noticed that mouse movement alone will not keep the screen saver from activating either. That is, if I don't touch the keyboard for 20 minutes (my screen saver timeout) and just click around surfing or whatever the screen saver will still come on. I confirm this problem too with 64bit intrepid and openGL screensavers. I have a radeonX700 so I'm pretty certain this isn't driver/card related. As a side-note I did *not* have this problem until I reformatted. Originally I upgraded to intrepid from hardy (both 64bit) and didn't have this problem. Confirmed. Same here - since the hardy update. Does everyone here did an update or a fresh install? Was the user profile recreated? I have 2 users on my pc and one of them does not have this problem. I tried changing some screen saver related settings, but this did not seem to work. It looks that this is related to some setting somehow. Confirming same problem here. I've got an nVidia GeForce 6200 and am using the nVidia binary driver version 177. Lattice responds fine, though, to mouse movement - isn't that a GL screensaver? Hmmm If I move the mouse a lot (ie, from one side of my desk to the other) the screensaver closes... There's a setting for mouse hysteresis, isn't there? Same thing here. I experience the same thing on two different computers, same version as above comment. BTW, this ONLY happens with GL screensavers. All others release as they should. I've got the same problem here. It seems it just started doing this. It was fine for a long time. The screensaver won't turn off by moving the mouse or even by touching the touchpad. The only way to get it to turn off is to press a key on the keyboard. I wonder if this helps explain. When the screensaver is on the cpu is flat out. If the mouse is moved within a minute or so of the screensaver coming in to play then then the screensaver does respond and close down.
