I upgraded Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10 using sudo apt-get dist-upgrade as the CD had the same white screen problem in it. I could reproduce the same effect on 8.04 (kubuntu) following this procedure: 1) normal boot 2) install binary driver with automatic procedure - 3) setup desktop effect + 3) setup desktop effect (works fine) 4) install 2.6.27-rc3 5) reboot with the new kernel My (naive) guess is that something goes wrong when the desktop is configured to use 3d acceleration and the corresponding driver is not found. I hope this helps. I can do more tests if you have suggestions of course.
