Mike I agree with you, I was also totally new when got that problem. and
i reinstalled my ubuntu to get rid of that problem :(

but now i know that "sudo" is required to type and sudo dpkg --configure -a
commands needs to run about three times to fix the problem.

2009-01-20 Thread Mike kearney
Hi.

This is for Chris Coulsdon.

Thank you!

When you wrote - To fix the problem, please follow the instructions in
the error message (run "sudo dpkg --configure -a").you solved my
problem!

The error message actually said - (run "dpkg --configure -a").- nothing
about "sudo". For a complete newcomer to Ubuntu, this is unhelpful,
because if you don't type "sudo" first, nothing happens.

My problem ocurred when I tried to install 180 updates on Intrepid. I
had left updating for some time after installing Ubuntu and I guess the
number had mounted up. Realising that the updates were taking a long
time to install, I decided to leave the machine running overnight. The
following morning I found that the bar had not moved and was stuck at
about 20% so I did a restart and then got the error message when I tried
to update again..

I think I could get to like Ubuntu - but it isn't for the faint hearted!

Best regards, Mike.

I think this error message it not new, terminal also showed this error
message last time when "sudo dpkg --configure -a" ran and did some
process, after the processes at end the error message came every time.

before sudo dpkg --configure -a this command was working in terminal,
but now this is also not doing processes as it did before.

Now it gives error message and stops.

2008-10-25 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu
better. However, the error message you describe has occurred because you
interrupted some package installation / upgrade (because of power
failure), and is not a bug.

To fix the problem, please follow the instructions in the error message
(run "sudo dpkg --configure -a").

I'm closing this, as the instructions I have given you will fix the
problem
