[Bug 341363] Re: [i945GME] drm:i915_getparam *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6

2009-09-24 Thread John Ward
I can confirm as well but my problem is that I can't get to the desktop.
I get a mixture of parameter 4 and 6 in the last lines of dmesg. I
will post my dmesg.log when I can. The odd thing is that the LiveCD
worked fine, I got a fully functional desktop - even compiz was switched
on automatically and worked well. But after install no desktop! Is this
new?

2009-08-13 Thread Andy Whitcroft
We have confirmed that these error messages are benign. They occur just
before a crash commonly simply as they occur at specific points in the
life cycle of the X server. If you are having a real crash it is
highly unlikely to be related to these specific messages. Please file a
separate bug for crashes.

I'd ask that you not do this, but rather file a new bug report. The
reason is that developers look at a max of one issue per bug report, and
so your issue will not get investigated if it is appended to someone
else's. Launchpad makes it very cheap and easy to mark two bugs dupes,
so if it does turn out your issue is the same as Liam's, we are able to
handle that situation most cleanly if your issue is on a separate bug
report. Thanks.

These are definitely a cause for a serious crash, these have happened always
with Jaunty.
The log entries always looked the same right before X goes.
With vanilla Ubuntu, and not Xfce, this tends to cause a hard lock, ie. even
Alt-SysRq-K does not work, but you need to hold the power button for 5 secs to
hard shut down.

2009-08-12 Thread MrAuer
My Asus Eee pc 901 with the Intel 945Gme chipset has its Xserver crash several
times per day.
This behaviour has never disappeared and my original report was marked as a
duplicate of a bug that has been fixed now.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/337116

Today X has crashed 3 times, this is syslog around the latest event. No Compiz,
Xubuntu 9.04 (had vanilla Ubuntu earlier, same thing, but with Gnome the
crashes were less frequent). I installed and updated to latest packages
yesterday, after trying Karmic daily build (hard locks all the time with that,
no go yet). Presently, this crash behaviour makes this computer preetty
unreliable in use.
I have the exact same install setup on my Eee pc 701, and that does not crash
or lock up.

[Bug 341363] Re: [i945GME] drm:i915_getparam *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6

2009-08-12 Thread Bryce Harrington
Again, Error unknown parameter 6 is merely a warning message which
pops up in various circumstances, and is not the *cause* of a crash or
other problem. Suppression of the confusing warning error message is up
to the kernel team. If you are experiencing an X crash, then again I
would ask that you report it as a *separate* bug report so that it is
simpler to troubleshoot.

For information on creating good bug reports about X problems please see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting, and in particular for crashes see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions on how to get proper
debug output so the issue can be solved.

Hi, I am running Jaunty (fully up-to-date as of 9th July 2009) 64 bit version.
My kern.log file shows alot of
[drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6
messages just before my system crashes.
My system is crashing in this way (on average) about once a day at the moment.
I believe these messages in the kern.log file are the last messages produced
before such a crash.

2009-05-12 Thread linuxwarrior
Hi, I confirm the error on an Asus eee Box running a fully updated
Jaunty.

 I see this with dmesg.

[drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6

ALSO I get strange display quircks like quick shifts to the left and
then right of about 1 inch. Then everything continues allright. It is
very fast you need to be watching to catch it. (Those seem to be related
to the get_vblank_counter message.

AND finally I get occasional X server black screens while everything
keeps working fine, I just stop seeing the VT7, if I switch to VT1 I get
text mode OK, but I can never get back to a visible VT7. (programs
running on X do not stop, i.e.: mplayer keeps playing)

2009-04-23 Thread htraki
Dear Andy,

Maybe I know where is the problem, but I dont have enough knowledge to create
deb files.
There is a file conflict between kernel and the libdrm headers. You put them
into the same directory, and when you compile intel driver, you compile aginst
kernel's drm ( which is wrong). You have to compile against libdrm.
I include a patch which will move libdrm headers into separate dir, feel free
to modify it.
Also You have to modify libdrm.pc.in before you run configure to set the
correct headers dir.
After that just recomplie libdrm and the intel driver, and hopefully problem
solved.

Note: I did not try this method on ubuntu I made a recipe for
GoboLinux, there I had the same problem.

[Bug 341363] Re: [i945GME] drm:i915_getparam *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6

2009-04-07 Thread Bryce Harrington
The error message seems to be on the linux side, not in X components
(not that I can find anyway). After checking with upstream, it seems to
be just an innocuous warning. It sounds scarier than it is.

It would be nice to suppress it, to help avoid future confusion by bug
reporters that see it, but it's not really super important.

Looking at the attachments in this bug report, I noticed that dmesg
was flagged as a patch. A patch contains changes to an Ubuntu package
that will resolve a bug, since this was not one I've unchecked the patch
flag for it. In the future keep in mind the definition of a patch. You
can learn more about what qualifies as a patch at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Patches. Thanks!

2009-03-28 Thread Andres Mujica
Hi, after digging around i've found some discussion about this, maybe
it's wothwhile to take a look into this patches

http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/3/20/452

i'm copying here what seems to be the cause of the issue:

From: Jesse Barnes jbar...@virtuousgeek.org

commit dc1336ff4fe08ae7cfe8301bfd7f0b2cfd31d20a upstream.

In the absence of kernel mode setting, many drivers disable IRQs across VT
switch.  The core DRM vblank code is missing a check for this case however;
even after IRQ disable, the vblank code will still have the vblank_enabled
flag set, so unless we track the fact that they're disabled at IRQ uninstall
time, when we VT switch back in we won't actually re-enable them, which means
any apps waiting on vblank before the switch will hang.

The upstream bug seems to be

2009-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
Florent,

You mention this started after you upgraded to kernel 2.6.28-9.29. Does
the issue go away if you downgrade (you can test by just booting an
earlier kernel)?

Actually, my best guess is that this is related to the libdrm 2.4.5
update, which happened on the 9th. Do the issues go away if you
downgrade that to 2.4.3?

(Fwiw, I've seen these messages myself, thanks for chasing down what
triggers them.)

[Bug 341363] Re: [i945GME] drm:i915_getparam *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6

2009-03-18 Thread Bryce Harrington
In that case, I suspect the issue is a mismatch between the libdrm
version we're using, and the version of DRM in the kernel. It was
updated to include the latest DRM bits for -ati. I also requested that
the -intel DRM kernel bits be updated but I'm not certain whether that
made it in or not. If not, perhaps we have to live with the error
message (we can't downgrade libdrm because I think -intel 2.6.3 would
fail to work; but maybe the error message could be suppressed some other
way).

Opening task for the kernel team to look into this. Hopefully if it's
just that newer DRM bits are needed, it's something they can pull in
post-beta.
