Solved:

Plz install the following package by changing the appropriate version of
ubuntu in the following line.

 sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic

You may need to update /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with

options snd-hda-intel model=ideapad

More details can be found in the below link

[Bug 374915] Re: Headphones do not work, built-in speakers do

2010-06-13 Thread Roy Kimbrell
Headphones not working for Karmic (9.10) 64-bit on a Dell Studio XPS but
speakers are working.

I´ve played with the pulseaudio volume control, turning on and off the
various devices and trying lots of combinations - no joy with any. I've
got the backports installed - all of them for 2.6.31-22. Still no
headphones. I've added the following to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=del-m6
options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1

But this didn't do anything that I could tell.

Aplay -l sez

card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Looks like the fix reported by Pablo (#16, above) is for linux-alsa-
driver-modules-2.6.32-22-generic. This isn't available in the normal
channel - e.g., using Synaptic since the current Linux version is
2.6.31-22 for Karmic.

There has been no activity on this bug for a while now. Is this issue

this problem still exists on lucid, please try installing the package

Reverting to stock drivers. I'm willing to recompile/reinstall the ALSA
drivers again, but I would like to know any follow-up commands you would
like me to execute so I can properly give all of the debug information
possible to you.

[Bug 374915] Re: Headphones do not work, built-in speakers do

2009-05-11 Thread fidian
Ok, this is very odd. The sound volume seems to fluctuate. I've been
playing my MP3 collection and some songs are hard to hear at full volume
and others are actually loud. No matter what the case, they all sound
distorted a bit, like something is over-amplifying the volume at some
stage, then later it gets scaled back. It's not that way in the songs.
Nor are songs consistently quiet or loud. It seems to waver with the
time or something. Anyway, just more issues. I'd still like to focus
on the headphone issue, but I didn't know if this info was useful for
diagnosing the problem.

2009-05-11 Thread fidian
Now that I am at home, I cranked the volume sliders to max and started
playing MP3s (built-in speakers). The volume is enough for me to listen
to it, but it certainly does not fill the room as before. Significant
loss in max volume. Unsure if this is also the case with the stock ALSA
drivers.

[Bug 374915] Re: Headphones do not work, built-in speakers do

2009-05-11 Thread fidian
Awesome turnaround time!

I did what you asked, not reverting to Jaunty's driver yet. The volume
control now shows a headphone slider and the master volume is a single
(mono) slider. The speakers still work without a headphone plugged in,
and no sound (even after turning all sliders up to max) with headphones
plugged in. Here's the output from configure (configure.txt), the
configure log, and the build output (make.txt). There were a couple
warnings reported. While they are not likely crucial to solving the
problem, I do like it when I don't see warnings during a compile ...
These three will be attached next.

Also I did a "tail /var/log/debug | grep ALSA > var-log-debug.alsa.txt"
in case that's helpful. This file is attached now. Since I can only
attach one, I thought I'd include the one that might help the most.

[Bug 374915] Re: Headphones do not work, built-in speakers do

2009-05-11 Thread Daniel T Chen
Firstly, you need to compile a debug version of the alsa-driver snapshot
from http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/snapshot/alsa-
driver-20090511.tar.bz2. Make sure you at least add --with-debug=full to
your ./configure line (additional options may be necessary). You'll need
to install these new drivers on top of your existing ones (I'll explain
how to revert to jaunty's later in this response).

So, to use the debugging snapshot:
download & extract alsa-driver-20090511.tar.bz2
cd alsa-driver ; ./configure --with-debug=full
make -j2
sudo /sbin/alsa force-unload
sudo make install ; sudo rm -f /etc/init.d/alsasound
sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel

To revert to jaunty's driver:
sudo /sbin/alsa force-unload
sudo rm -rf /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/sound
sudo apt-get --reinstall install linux-image-$(uname -r)
sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel

Secondly, we'll proceed once you've completed the first step.
