I'm glad the issue has been resolved in the meantime (quite a while ago, actually). "Fix committed" is not the correct state for this ticket. I'll close as invalid instead since the root cause of the problem was never pinpointed. I'm quite sure the problem was indeed valid and some fix along the way took care of it, we simply don't know which one and that's when we use "invalid" as well. I have a system showing very similar (and unpredictable) shut off behavior. I noticed in my logs that motd was getting called via cron just as the system seem to vanish. The next entry in the log was me rebooting the box. In this case, it always happened during inactivity, until this morning. I ran r...@www:~# [ -x /usr/sbin/update-motd ] && /usr/sbin/update-motd 2>/dev/null repeatedly by up arrowing and running as fast as I could. after a few seconds is just powered off, in a flash. It's a 64bit server 9.04 Ubuntu install on a AMD 4800+ system with 4 GB of corsair ram. Re: Overheating - Unlikely. This has happened after it's been up for as long as several days, or as short as a few minutes after a restart, when the system had been powered down. It's a HP laptop with nVidia GPU. Re: Micro-cut - This is a laptop. Battery would have taken over for power loss. I'm hoping it's some type of code related issue, as, again, this NEVER happened until almost immediately after I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04, using the upgrade option thru update manager. This hasn't happened since the last one occurred on 5/17, but I haven't used the machine as much, recently. I happened to catch it in the act, finally.. and there's nothing to give a hint to the cause of the problem.
