[Bug 377789] Re: After upgrading to 9.04 broadcom wireless no longer connects and firefox and graphics behaving strangely, everything worked fine with 8.10. Dell D600 laptop

2009-10-16 Thread huguley
I am having a similar issue with a d600. It is intermittent though.
The machine generally works but sometimes when it starts up it will
connect but be very slow on the wireless then it will disconnect. It
will usually reconnect for short periods of time. Rebooting the machine
will clear up the problem. The machine gets turned off every time so it
is not an issue with it going to sleep. It only seemed to start
happening after upgrading to 9.04 but 8 was only installed for a while
and the problem may just not have been noticed.

The wireless network is working fine as my D630 with 8.10 is on the same
network and never has the problem.

The b43-fwcutter package is installed.

Any suggestions on things to try are welcome.

If you are having problem using the wireless with Broadcom 4312, after
apply the kernel updates on Jaunty, install the b43-fwcutter should
resolve the issue.

Hi Jim,

I used CDROM when I installed 9.04, what did u use last time? What model
is your laptop and wireless? Everything is running so well under 8.10 I
am wary of upgrading again.

[Bug 377789] Re: After upgrading to 9.04 broadcom wireless no longer connects and firefox and graphics behaving strangely, everything worked fine with 8.10. Dell D600 laptop

2009-07-08 Thread Jim
OK - I have reinstalled and installed updates. I updated in 3 stages:
1. Non-kernel updates
2. Kernel updates without restricted drivers
3. Restricted driver modules

1. made no difference - wireless network was still OK (expected)
2. wireless didn't work - this was expected as the wl driver for the Broadcom
4312 is restricted
3. wireless still worked.

So after reinstalling and updating there isn't a problem (subject to
more testing but it has rebooted and seems OK)

Differences this time are:

1. XP is still installed on a partition so the location on disk is different
(so what?)
2. I installed the kernel updates before restricted driver updates - maybe
there is an update installation ordering problem or an update has changed in
the week or so since I last did this.

I'll update if anything changes but for now its OK.

Since this problem is happened on the latest Jaunty, we will hope this problem
could be solved before Karmic release. It would be better if you or Jim could

We don't want to bother your too much, if you are not available to reinstall

I will get back to it but re-installed XP to ensure that the problems
I was having (there was another apart from the wireless) were not
hardware failures. I have other problems on XP :) but will try again
in a few days when I get time. I will upload the information asked for
after the intial installation when it all works and after the update
when it doesn't.

I have a similar problem.
Hardware is a new Dell Vostro 1520 with Broadcom 4312 wireless card.

9.04 installed and the wireless network connection worked fine. It was using
the wl driver.

I did an update and now the wireless is disabled in Network Manager. Right
clicking Network Manager shows the wireless interface is disabled and greyed
out. The wl drivers are loaded and iwconfig sees a wireless interface on eth1.
If I 'modprobe -r wl' to unload the wl driver then Network Manager has no
wireless details visible. Loading wl again returns the greyed out view to NM

I have repeated this process and it is consistent.
