comment from upstream: It would be pretty easy for packagers to add one if they wanted to. We don't want to do it by default, though. I'd expect each terminal already has a menu entry, and this one would be redundant and just clutter it up. Thank you for this bug report. I believe that the terminal accessed by Application-accessories-terminal is hard coded to be the gnome- terminal. I believe the problem is setting xterm as default in the preferred applications doesn't change this fact. What's going on is that the menu item Application-accessories-terminal has a desktop file that tells that menu entry what to do when it is pressed. It is told to launch a gnome-terminal. I believe if the desktop file for that menu entry gave a command for the terminal in your preferred applications your problem would be solved.
