[Bug 40682] Re: My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise
I definitely fixed my problem on my 650U on Ubuntu 12.04 with the help of the sane-devel mailing list. Don't know if that method (that requires re-defining the motors parameters) would apply to the Lide20 also, and I don't know if using wrong values on the lide20 could damage the scanner hardware, so I think someone experiencing this bug better writes directly to the list and report here the results -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40682 Title: My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-frontends/+bug/40682/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 40682] Re: My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise
I have the same problem, now in Ubuntu 13.10, with my CanoScan LIDE 100 In previous versions of ubuntu (say 12.10 or before), the scanner used to work reasonably well with "Simple Scan' but would jam in xsane. Now in 13.10 it gets stuck in the middle of the scan and the header won't return to the starting position. Makes strange noises. Booting the system in 'Windows' would reset the scanner head to starting position. It works fantastic in Windows and never gives a problem. But if I try to scan anything in ubuntu again, the scanner is bound to get stuck. ** Also affects: sane-frontends (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40682 Title: My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-frontends/+bug/40682/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 40682] Re: My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise
I've had the same problem for some time - the scanner makes a terrible noise and is stuck in the middle instead of going back to it's "starting position". I tried downloading the drivers from Canon and the software but still the problem was there, but I've been certain the scanner wasn't broken and some setting needed adjusting. Today I fixed my scanner by going to my CONTROL PANEL (PC - VISTA) and going to "Scanners & Cameras" tab. A window box pops up and is supposed to show all scanners and camera connected to my computer. It was empty, so I clicked on the add device and it added my cannon scanner and immediately the scanner moved the bar to its starting position and I was able to scan again just fine. I had the scanner plugged in at the time I hit the add device button. Hope this helps others. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40682 Title: My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsane/+bug/40682/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 40682] Re: My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise
I think this has to do with the axis mapping of the unit. Mine makes odd sounds before the scan, and then scans only a small area. In the bottom left of the xsane control window, it says 10.30 cm x 7.62cm. I can go into advanced options and see that there are zeroes in the top two fields (top left x, top left y) and the 10.30cm is bottom right x, while 7.62cm is bottom right y) I'm thinking the support for these is buggy, in that in our cases perhaps - the mapping for the scan lamp itself is incorrect and it forces the lamp to try to move against it's stops or something similar. Quite odd nonetheless. I may try trial and error to see what I can do with adjusting the geometry, but I'm a little nervous about and will be ready to pull out the usb cable. -- My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40682 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 40682] Re: My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise
I have this same problem with my CanoScan N650U scanner and Jaunty. After only a few scans (or perhaps only one; it seems to be random) the scanning element starts buzzing loudly at the point where it is due to return after completing a scan (or sometimes just as it commences scanning). It sounds as though it is about to self-destruct, provoking a quick unplugging of cables and exiting (forced quit) of XSANE. [Bug 40682] Re: My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise
My LIDE 60 does this on Gutsy. It completes a scan, the just makes a grumbling noise and xsane is locked up. It worked fine in Feisty. I have just discovered it only does this if more than one page is set top scan as Tormod found. If 2 pages are selected, the grinding noise continues for about 3 minutes and then it is functioning again. Kooka behaves the similarly. 1 page set, it works fine.

The problem described in Bug #85488 is due to a change in the USB driver in the kernel, and that's what the scanbuttonsd fix is about (it keeps the USB port from sleeping on the job). HOWEVER this effect was not noticed in Edgy or Dapper, so if you're having the grinding noise in those releases it's not the same bug. I believe there's been progress on the USB problem so I suspect it will be corrected in time for Gutsy 7.10. I haven't (yet?) experienced grinding noises on my Canon LiDE scanner. You could check to be sure the "lock" switch on the scanner hasn't been flipped by mistake, but I'm assuming your scanner works on other OS versions which would rule that out.
Hi there! Same problem here with Feisty (7.04) 1) I installed scanbuttond < to fix the problem of USB_SUSPEND in Feisty 2) I tweaked scanbuttond with a small script as reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane- backends/+bug/85488/comments/200 <--- this to fix scan lamp not going back to "parking position" after scanning. But the random and AWFUL noise (most of times on the beginning of scanning) with consequent scanner hang IS STILL THERE!! Only by unplugging the scanner form USB port, does terminates the screechy noise...I'm also afraid it can damage something within the scanner... NOTE: While the noise + hanging often happens in regular scanningit seems to not be present in the "preview mode". I've tried with a CANON Lide 25 and the awfull noise + hanging problem does not occur. I'm googling and googling but still can't find a solutionsomeone suppose it's an issue with electrical current manging the scan lamp Any help / suggestion will be gladly apreciated! -- My scanner, a Canon CanoScan LIDE 20, makes grinding noise https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/40682 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
