Alexia
There must be a similar line in kdm.conf (as gdm.conf is mostly copied from
it). look for code like the subtracted part I posted above.

Martin
Quite likely. The workaround seems to have my system booting normally again
(four successful reboots so far). There are about a dozen other possible
duplicates floating around.

Synaptic just asked me to replace gdm.conf

this has been redone:
- and (graphics-device-added fb0 PRIMARY_DEVICE_FOR_DISPLAY=1
- or drm-device-added card0 PRIMARY_DEVICE_FOR_DISPLAY=1
+ and (drm-device-added card0 PRIMARY_DEVICE_FOR_DISPLAY=1
or stopped udevtrigger))

Looks like what Scott had in mind for a better workaround (I can't call
it a fix until it gets into upstart, as I know it will one day).

also it wants to remove my sleep :( ..that said i never sleep much after
an upgrade anyway.

2010-09-26 Thread Romain Motylicki
Hi,

I tried to improve the loop in #62. I made this though it is far from
being perfect and probably quite dirty :

modprobe nvidia
until lsmod | grep ^nvidia
do :
done

sleep 2
exec gdm-binary $CONFIG_FILE

I tried to remove the sleep command, but in that case, X always crashes. So I
think that the module needs to be fully loaded.
If it still does not work for you, try to change the delay.

The timing matter (race conditions or so) is quite relevant.

Nevertheless, each time I get a update from nvidia drivers my computer
stops to show the bug, and it starts it again only with some other next
update (not always, but often) related to some other packages.

The log today.

Upgrade: libsmbclient (3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.1, 3.4.7~dfsg-1ubuntu3.2),

260.19.04-0ubuntu0sarvatt~lucid)
End-Date: 2010-09-15 10:55:45

After I got new nvidia 185 upgrade, the problem vanished again.

I don't know if this is relevant, I hope this will help to fix the
problem for ever.

2010-09-13 Thread Scott James Remnant
Moved this back to kdm - while I appreciate there is a Upstart could be
better issue in here, there's more than enough of those filed upstream
and I'm hard at work on the next version of Upstart -- there's no quick
fix in Upstart for dealing with this kind of sequencing issue yet

The fix for this bug will come from changes to the kdm.conf - the
purpose of the PRIMARY_DEVICE_FOR_DISPLAY was to avoid these races -
perhaps that udev rule or the kdm config need tweaking to make sure that
a device isn't tagged as such when using the nvidia binary driver?

[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2010-09-11 Thread quequotion
The triggering factors of this bug can range from hardware to installed
packages to how fragmented your drive is and how much drive seeking for
components happens during load. None of these are really the cause. The
cause is that upstart optimized for fast start up is starting X before
the underlying system is ready in some systems and under some
circumstances.

Which means best-case scenario we need to look at reconfiguring upstart.

I was reading
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeetingLogs/devweek1007/UpstartJobs and came
across a good suggestion:

this command:
sudo initctl log-priority info

will cause upstart to output information in /var/log/syslog. I'm going
to give it a shot later with without sleep 2 and see if I can get
any interesting output.

That chatlog also has a few other insights into what may need to be done
to get to the bottom of this.

[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2010-09-11 Thread Rolf Bensch
While analysing this problem dont't forget that vga16 and nvidia (and
other graphic drivers) are sharing the same primary frame buffer device
/dev/fb0
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/459639/comments/52).

Vga16 is the first available graphics driver at boot time, and will be
replaced by other graphic drivers later on.

In kdm.conf the watched event graphics-device-added fb0
PRIMARY_DEVICE_FOR_DISPLAY=1 isn't secure if a 2nd graphics driver is
used.

To fix this, a new event should be emitted from all graphics drivers or
from upstart or from udev or ... as start condition for kdm.conf. And
upstart must know if there is any other graphics installed beside vga16
(ok, typically on every home and business pc, but what's about small
systems and servers).

[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2010-09-09 Thread Cesare Mastroianni

Hi there. I removed the 2 seconds delay workaround some time ago, after the
latest nvidia drivers update.

Later, the problem/bug came back: however I missed to add the 2 seconds
delay trick, and it vanished some days later. I noticed that this
peculiar behaviour happened when some automatic update was performed...
I mean:

On Sept 3rd these packages have been updated:
Start-Date: 2010-09-03 09:06:18
Upgrade: libgudev-1.0-0 (151-12, 151-12.1), usb-creator-gtk (0.2.22, 0.2.22.1),
udev (151-12, 151-12.1), python-aptdaemon (0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4,
0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4.1), aptdaemon (0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4,
0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4.1), wget (1.12-1.1ubuntu2, 1.12-1.1ubuntu2.1),
python-aptdaemon-gtk (0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4, 0.11+bzr345-0ubuntu4.1), libudev0
(151-12, 151-12.1), usb-creator-common (0.2.22, 0.2.22.1), mountall (2.15,
2.15.1), usb-creator (0.2.22, 0.2.22.1)
End-Date: 2010-09-03 09:09:06

After this update the bug comes back.

On Sept 08th these packages have been update:
Start-Date: 2010-09-08 10:11:02
Upgrade: gdebi (0.6.0ubuntu1, 0.6.0ubuntu2), gdebi-core (0.6.0ubuntu1,
0.6.0ubuntu2), sudo (1.7.2p1-1ubuntu5.1, 1.7.2p1-1ubuntu5.2), gwibber-service
(2.30.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.2-0ubuntu1), gwibber (2.30.1-0ubuntu1, 2.30.2-0ubuntu1),
python-lazr.restfulclient (0.9.11-1ubuntu1, 0.9.11-1ubuntu1.1), lftp (4.0.2-1,
4.0.2-1ubuntu0.1)
End-Date: 2010-09-08 10:11:45

After this update the bug vanished.

I can't understand which package update trigged this behaviour ...

[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2010-09-09 Thread Alexia Death
Probably none of these specifically. It's a timing issue so it depends
on how fast the system is loaded from the drive. For me, faster drive or
installing server software equally hid the bug. Faster drive probably
because nvidia loads faster now and the server software because X was
delayed a second or two.

Looking at your changes, the update that made the issue appear probably
made some start-up component faster, speculatively mountall looks
interesting, but I haven't checked the change log. The next update
updated at least one service, potentially making the startup again
slightly slower.

The triggering factors of this bug can range from hardware to installed
packages to how fragmented your drive is and how much drive seeking for
components happens during load. None of these are really the cause. The
cause is that upstart optimized for fast start up is starting X before
the underlying system is ready in some systems and under some

Watson

Considering that the bug appears to be in upstart or gdm and affects
users of both grub-pc and grub-legacy (not that either has been
mentioned anywhere in the bug report), I can't say I support this
theory.

Also, any bug that causes login to be delayed, annoying, cumbersome, or
impossible is a very important bug.
Users expect to get from power-on to desktop in as little time as possible with

[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2010-08-27 Thread Colin Watson
I believe that this should be less vitally urgent now that we've
reverted the GRUB change to use gfxpayload=keep for Maverick. I don't
think this has fixed the bug since this bug was present in Lucid, but I
think it should reduce its incidence and am thus decreasing the
importance to Medium.

I'd appreciate bug comments one way or the other.

[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2010-08-21 Thread quequotion
This is basically Rolf's idea (#53), but I put the sleep in a different
place for /etc/init/gdm.conf. In this case it just holds off the call to
gdm-binary. This is woking for me for now, but I don't much like it.

[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2010-08-20 Thread quequotion
I think Alexia may be right. I'm having the same trouble with gdm. There
are several bug reports scattered around that look like the same issue.
Some of them do not involve nvidia, but have the same symptoms.

How could one script a check to make sure /some/ graphics driver is
loaded before starting the login manager? That would be more elegant and
efficient than a sleep, and more effective than just checking for
nvidia.

similar bug reports:
532436 - failure possibly related to nvidia
573455 - i marked this as a duplicate of 532436
581302 - the description contains different details and is not connected to the
nvidia driver, but the login manager fails in the same manner.
498315 - similar problem as I am having now, but I haven't looked into this
yet. I also use ureadahead and this report proposes a connection
587607 - probably a duplicate of 581302, but not yet expired
496796 - probably unrelated, but worth a look
447226 - probably unrelated, but worth a look

[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2010-08-18 Thread Marco Cimmino
Robbie for my experience bugs get not automagically fixed, I can't test
on Maverick right now, but if there is a problem that nvidia module is
not loaded then this bug will raise in Maverick too.

Maybe this should be fixed in the nvidia driver or maybe in kdm, this I
don't know, but until someone does not start working on it then nothing
will be fixed.

[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2010-08-18 Thread Alexia Death
Actually its neither kdm nor nvidia bug. Its an straight out
ubuntu/upstart bug. Upstart starts KDM before the nvidia driver in the
kernel is ready is ready and X fails. Perhaps a proper fix would be an
upstart job that is installed with the binary driver and checks if
nvidia is ready and delays X start until it is.
