[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot
The triggering factors of this bug can range from hardware to installed packages to how fragmented your drive is and how much drive seeking for components happens during load. None of these are really the cause. The cause is that upstart optimized for fast start up is starting X before the underlying system is ready in some systems and under some circumstances. Which means best-case scenario we need to look at reconfiguring upstart. I was reading https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeetingLogs/devweek1007/UpstartJobs and came across a good suggestion: this command: sudo initctl log-priority info will cause upstart to output information in /var/log/syslog. I'm going to give it a shot later with without sleep 2 and see if I can get any interesting output. That chatlog also has a few other insights into what may need to be done to get to the bottom of this. -- X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/459639 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 459639] Re: X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot
While analysing this problem dont't forget that vga16 and nvidia (and other graphic drivers) are sharing the same primary frame buffer device /dev/fb0 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/459639/comments/52). Vga16 is the first available graphics driver at boot time, and will be replaced by other graphic drivers later on. In kdm.conf the watched event graphics-device-added fb0 PRIMARY_DEVICE_FOR_DISPLAY=1 isn't secure if a 2nd graphics driver is used. To fix this, a new event should be emitted from all graphics drivers or from upstart or from udev or ... as start condition for kdm.conf. And upstart must know if there is any other graphics installed beside vga16 (ok, typically on every home and business pc, but what's about small systems and servers).

Probably none of these specifically. It's a timing issue so it depends on how fast the system is loaded from the drive. For me, faster drive or installing server software equally hid the bug. Faster drive probably because nvidia loads faster now and the server software because X was delayed a second or two. Looking at your changes, the update that made the issue appear probably made some start-up component faster, speculatively mountall looks interesting, but I haven't checked the change log. The next update updated at least one service, potentially making the startup again slightly slower. The triggering factors of this bug can range from hardware to installed packages to how fragmented your drive is and how much drive seeking for components happens during load. Maybe this should be fixed in the nvidia driver or maybe in kdm, this I don't know, but until someone does not start working on it then nothing will be fixed.
Actually its neither kdm nor nvidia bug. Its an straight out ubuntu/upstart bug. Upstart starts KDM before the nvidia driver in the kernel is ready is ready and X fails. Perhaps a proper fix would be an upstart job that is installed with the binary driver and checks if nvidia is ready and delays X start until it is. -- X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/459639 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
