[Bug 495932] Re: Karmic/ AMD64 --Video/mouse/keyboard freezes

2010-07-09 Thread Richard Waters
Again, this time I went for approx 24hrs without a crash.

I have just noticed that a lot of the crashes happen almost immediately
after shutting down transmission bittorrent client.

1) Came back to the machine, screensaver on.
2) Woke the machine up, password and back to desktop
3) Shut down Transmission
4) As I has read before, restart the machines sometimes helped, so restart.
5) Open Pino, Pidgin... ...Freeze. Only answer to reset button and reboot.

I hope that something comes up soon, as I need this machine to be
stable, I am going to have to start looking at other distros until I
find one thats stable.

PLEASE PLEASE HELP, ANYONE, I have run out of options and I really dont
want to go back to WindowsXP

[Bug 495932] Re: Karmic/ AMD64 --Video/mouse/keyboard freezes

2010-07-08 Thread Richard Waters
I have just noticed, by accident (because I had the System Monitor
open!) that just before a crash the duel cores I have seem to steadily
rise in activity, %'s slowly but steadily increasing and then *POP* I
crashed.

After a reboot:
CPU1 = 1.1% with CPU2 = 5.5% (on average)

Opening a program:
CPU1 = 4.0% with CPU2 = 12% (on average)

After leaving the machine overnight, downloading torrents and running music:
CPU1 = 17% with CPU2 = 45% (while resting, just working)

Continue to use machine after overnight use, open Firefox3.5, Pino, Pidgin,
Thunderbird:
CPU1 = 35% with CPU2 = 72% (then slowly rising from there)

*CRASH*

The last I saw before the crash CPU1 had hit around 82% and CPU2 was
showing 100% for a couple of seconds.

I have considered that this may have been an overheating problem at
first but it is setting in a HUGE server case with only 2xhdd's and the
30cm side fan and 2 power supply fans, the CPU fan is fine. Besides,
the machines longest run before a crash went for nearly 48hrs under
various loads.

I have also noticed that if I see the CPUs start to look too high in
numbers, a logout and log back in seems to alleviate the problem for a
while, but this means I need to keep an eye on the system monitor, and
sometimes, one program will trip it up, almost any program at all.

Maybe, someone will make sense of this report, because Im running out of
ideas. I know enough about linux to get myself into trouble but not
always enough to get out; and at the moment I have tried everything that
I am capable of to fix this beside buy brand new hardware or go back to
Ubuntu 8.10?!?!

2010-07-07 Thread Richard Waters
I can now also add leaving rhythembox playing in the task bar for
longer than 1hr as also another reproduction of the error.

I am also finding that just before a crash the internet speed seems to
throttle itself randomly before the machine crashes.

[Bug 495932] Re: Karmic/ AMD64 --Video/mouse/keyboard freezes

2010-07-07 Thread Richard Waters
I have tried the kernels that came with the install and found that
2.6.31.14 seemed more stable for longer compared to the default
2.6.31.22 that is shipped with the Ubuntu 9.10 I am using.

Maybe that will help with something. The only other thing I can do is
install the kernel base of 2.6.31.1 and see if THAT makes a difference.

[Bug 495932] Re: Karmic/ AMD64 --Video/mouse/keyboard freezes

2010-07-06 Thread Richard Waters
Nope, I would have to say that I can reliably recreate this error by the
following means:

Using the inbuilt gnome pdf reader and using the scroll wheel to view
the document using a USB mouse.

Same thing, usb mouse, viewing firefox on a website that is graphic
intensive.

The faster I move the more I see the screen jump and shift and
shortly after complete freeze that only a reboot will fix. Reset button
as even the power button wont respond.

I am getting 6 to 10 crashes a day, ruining files and locking me out of
them in read-only.

Please help, so far I have tried everything I can, or have knowledge of.

use and Im running out of ideas? Anyone?

Im getting to the point where I am spending more time recovering from
crashes than doing work, please, Im desperate, what else can I do?

I'm currently running 9.10 and the problem has been greatly reduced in
the last couple of updates. I apologize for not updating launchpad.

This problem has been much less frequent since 9.10. It has froze a
couple of times over the last 6 months, but I consider that OK.
