[Bug 497158] Re: MIR for r-base

2010-03-18 Thread marutter
I am one of the two people (Michael) that maintain the Ubuntu side of
the tings on CRAN. I would be willing to help maintain R in main, I
just don't know what the procedures are. The build scripts exist and
are maintained to coincide with R releases and we usually have a new
version up within a week of a new version of Ubuntu being officially
released.

[Bug 497158] Re: MIR for r-base

2010-03-16 Thread Martin Pitt
This was discussed with Dirk and Richard in PM (unfortunately). Summary:

 - Debian packages are in great shape

 - Vincent Goulet and Michael Rutter build third-party packages for
Ubuntu in http://cran.US.r-project.org/bin/linux/ubuntu/

 - We do not seem to have a permanent Ubuntu maintainer right now who
has a look at them in Ubuntu?

If you ask me, this seems a little too big a step for this LTS, but
perhaps you can reorganize above third-party repo to maintain and test
packages directly in Ubuntu, so that we can promote them for 10.10?
Would that be acceptable, or do you despearately need this for 10.04?
(It seems to be an optional build dep)

[Bug 497158] Re: MIR for r-base

2010-03-12 Thread Richard Johnson
Sorry Martin for letting this slip through. I will ask Dirk what his
intentions are and see if he is able to make sure that it works. If he
doesn't, then I will ask Riddell what he thinks.

[Bug 497158] Re: MIR for r-base

2010-01-19 Thread Martin Pitt
Do we have confirmation from Dirk that he makes sure that R works in
Ubuntu releases (due to the different release cycles)? If not, does the
Kubuntu team commit to looking after it?

[Bug 497158] Re: MIR for r-base

2009-12-21 Thread Martin Pitt
To be honest, I'm very hesitant with this, as long as we don't have a
dedicated Ubuntu maintainer. R is a huge project and needs corresponding
attention. I know that Dirk does an excellent job with R maintenance in
Debian, but due to our different release cycles maintenance needs to be
coordinated particularly for Ubuntu as well.
