*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 419143 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/419143 I can reproduce this bug already without CUPS, by opening your PDF file, printing it into a PDF file (evince re-renders the file instead of simply passing it through, blowing it up from 97K to 1300K) and then letting Ghostscript render it with the command line you have posted here: cat ST.00052-evince.pdf | time gs -dFirstPage=1 -q -dBATCH -dPARANOIDSAFER -dQUIET -dNOPAUSE -sDEVICE=ijs -sIjsServer=hpijs -dDEVICEWIDTHPOINTS=595 -dDEVICEHEIGHTPOINTS=842 -sDeviceManufacturer =HEWLETT-PACKARD -sDeviceModel='hp LaserJet 1010' -dDuplex=false -r600 -sIjsParams=Quality:Quality=0,Quality:ColorMode=0,Quality:MediaType=0,Quality:PenSet=0,PS:MediaPosition=7 -dIjsUseOutputFD -sOutputFile=- -_ out.pxl This takes more than 9 minutes on my laptop, whereas feeding your original file directly into Ghostscript does the job in less than a second. This is a known problem of Cairo (the rendering engine used by evince) and not a Ghostscript problem. If you observe too slow printing again, please run the top command in a terminal window and see which processes are listed at first.
