I had this happening with the Xsane preview window in Ubuntu 20.04. Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS XSane version 0.999 XSane apt package version 0.999-8ubuntu2 (amd64) Solution was to open the preview window from the Windows menu, then closing XSane with ctrl+q. I experienced this problem with xsane 0.999 under Ubuntu 16.04. I have a Seiko Epson Corp. GT-8200U/GT-8200UF [Perfection 1650/1650 PHOTO] scanner. I have a NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 430] (rev a1) video card. I found a strange work around at ubuntuforums.org http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1368876 Sometime later! more news. I have a work around, if you open Xsane, and then select the preview it does not work. But if you close xsane via Ctrl-Q while the Preview window is open. Then restart xsane the preview window is opened (as you have previously selected it) and lo and behold the preview pane is working. Last edited by emacdonald; January 29th, 2010 at 11:18 PM. I had the same problem with a much newer version.A portion of the rulers (only the part overwritten by the triangular position mark sprites) would redraw when I moused over and if I lingered over where the acquire preview button should be I got a tooltip and was able to push the button (alt-p was easier) and an image was displayed. But the dashed lines for the outline were not visable. I had just recently switched from proprietary ATI driver to open source driver. Rather than killing the entire .sane directory, I decided to be more selective. Deleting just the ~/.sane/xsane/xsane.rc (actually renamed it xsane.rc.bad) and restarting xsane fixed the problem (while restarting xsane without deleting did not hellp). Deleting ~/.sane solved the issue for few individuals. I am on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS / amd64.. Xsane Preview window (through Gimp ) had always worked (even on 12.04 LTS) but just recently stopped. Now I got the blank preview (but working/hidden buttons) everyone else is describing. This remains a problem on Ubuntu 12.04 using xsane from Gimp. Changing some of the settings at random sometimes brings an image into the preview window but the buttons remain undefined although if you hunt around and guess where they are they do in fact work. Using kubuntu - noticed the same apparently blank preview window. Apparently the controls are there 'cos clicking on where I think some of them are causes the anticipated effect. I.e. clicking in the bottom LH corner of an apparently blank preview window causes xsane to do a preview scan. This may be unrelated, having scanned, the main viewer window then attempts to display the scanned image as a single column of pixels in the centre of window. This probably is unrelated. I recently upgraded to Kubuntu 11.10 and now the Xsane preview window doesn't work. It comes up as blank white as reported by Robert Lee. I tried reinstalling it twice but that didn't solve the problem. The scan instruction works and all other windows open correctly but without the previewer the program is much reduced in usability. I am using a HP Deskjet F380 printer scanner and an Acer TravelMate 6410. Interestingly the preview window did open and operate once after I had been using (with only partial success) Skanlite and the LibreOffice scan facility. I have not been able to replicate this situation. When I open the preview screen, I get a blank window with no buttons or controls visible. On mouseover, I see activity along the top and left edge only. If I click on the bottom left of the window (where the Acquire Preview button should be) then it does acquire a preview and show it in the window - but there is no way to see which area of the preview is currently selected, making it useless.
