Same problem on Macbook 5,1 Unibody on Precise. Sometime it works (maybe after poweroff) but most of the time does not. I have a Samsung RV511 running ocelot, with a USB BCM2046 bluetooth dongle. I can confirm that upon hotplugging the dongle, lsusb shows that device is registered, however as other have pointed out, hcitool scan returns: Device is not available: No such device. I also experienced the issue of the gnome applet pretty much not doing anything useful. In my case, the problem was solved by installing the bluez-compat package. No further issues with the device. I have a Dell Mini 10 (1012), and it has BCM2046 bluetooth, too. It sees other bluetooth devices but always fails to connect.
