Re: [Bug 59595] Re: Edgy: MacBook Pro: X is unusably distorted

2007-04-26 Thread Jordan
I suggest that if you know how you use the alternate CD to install and how
to install fglrx from the terminal after X crashes or in a chroot ( as I did
) because outside of this bug macbook pro support is *much* better in
Feisty, even screen brightness and keyboard brightness controll work out of
the box. If you need help installing fglrx from a chroot / after X crashes
on the installed system, I can give detailed instructions.

2007-04-25 Thread Fate
In Feisty I just get a black screen with nothing at all. I'm not really sure
this is an improvement :)
Kubuntu just looks sexy on Mac hardware. I guess I'll have to go back to Dapper
since it worked just
fine.

[Bug 59595] Re: Edgy: MacBook Pro: X is unusably distorted

2007-04-20 Thread Michael Nischt
Still doesn't work with Ubuntu 7.04 here and my 17" macbook pro.

Aftert Select* (both: normal and safe graphics mode) the display becomes black
with backlight in VGA mode.
If I select a resolution (F4), it goes a bit further, but X crashes during
startup.

Again, looks like waiting 6 month and hope.. :-(

[Bug 59595] Re: Edgy: MacBook Pro: X is unusably distorted

2007-04-19 Thread Evan McNulty
Macbook pro video

works with fglrx
not supported by ati driver (open source/reverse engineer)
not supported by vesa driver (support broken in feisty release
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/89853 )

Which means we cannot verify if this is fixed or not in feisty due to
the other bug, I think

Yes, I have a macbook pro with everything working, One of the goals of
Feisty was intel mac support so I would try installing Feisty.

[Bug 59595] Re: Edgy: MacBook Pro: X is unusably distorted

2007-02-12 Thread Fate
When using the method posted by Jordan when I press CTRL+ALT+FN+F1 I
switch to the console but instead of getting a shell prompt I just get a
blank screen with the backlight on. I can type in sudo apt-get update
and when I hit enter the CD drive spins as if it is executing.
Unfortunately I'm unable to edit xorg.conf like this even if I managed
to type all of the shell commands. There must be some other solution or
way to get to a place to install the fglrx driver. Any ideas?

Re: [Bug 59595] Re: Edgy: MacBook Pro: X is unusably distorted

2007-02-03 Thread Jordan
Yes, although the install CD does not work yet without tweaking some things
there are step by stem instructions but they don't seem to cover this
problem as I guess not everyone has encountered it so use these instructions
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook until the part where is says
"**Select
*Start or install Ubuntu"* then follow these steps : Connect to the internet
through ethernet then get to a terminal by pressing ctrl+alt+fn+F1 then run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
sudo depmod -a
sudo aticonfig --initial
sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

## That last command should open a text editor with your xorg.conf, at
the end of this file add these lines:

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "0"
EndSection

## now exit nano by pressing ctrl+x, when asked if you want to save
type yes and hit enter, you will now be back at a terminal

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

## You should now be at a working GUI and you can finish the install
following the instructions up to the point where is says " To enable
mousekeys emulation, turn the lower Enter key into Right and Middle
Mouse Buttons:" as the rest is macbook specific and won't work on a
macbook pro ( wow this post turned out to be a lot longer than I
planned it to be :)

I had the same problem with the Edgy Live CD, hopefully this is fixed
soon.

Btw. is there an easy way to get edgy working inlcuding hardware
accelerated OpenGL on a MacBook Pro 17 (intel cure duo, not core 2 duo)
atm?
