[Bug 625036] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel] Playback problem
For a sense of comparison, I was working on a (less capable) machine the other day that was getting DDOSed; it had a system load in the 30s and it was more responsive (and easier to type on) than this machine. top - 04:38:52 up 1:40, 3 users, load average: 2.34, 1.78, 1.73 Tasks: 290 total, 3 running, 286 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombie Cpu(s): 7.0%us, 32.1%sy, 0.4%ni, 57.9%id, 2.2%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.4%si, 0.0%st Mem: 5987580k total, 3032896k used, 2954684k free, 734944k buffers Swap: 3911792k total,0k used, 3911792k free, 1201208k cached PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND 4453 root 20 0 19408 1432 948 R0 0.0 0:00.01 top 1 root 20 0 23964 2132 1304 S0 0.0 0:07.94 init 2 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kthreadd 3 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.37 ksoftirqd/0 4 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/0 5 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/0 6 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/1 7 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:07.55 ksoftirqd/1 8 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/1 9 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/2 10 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:03.77 ksoftirqd/2 11 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/2 12 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/3 13 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:04.03 ksoftirqd/3 14 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/3 15 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.02 migration/4 16 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.77 ksoftirqd/4 17 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/4 18 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.01 migration/5 19 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:01.50 ksoftirqd/5 20 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/5 21 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.01 migration/6 22 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.13 ksoftirqd/6 23 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/6 24 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 migration/7 25 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:01.34 ksoftirqd/7 26 root RT 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 watchdog/7 27 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.06 events/0 28 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.01 events/1 29 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.03 events/2 30 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.16 events/3 31 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.01 events/4 32 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.02 events/5 33 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.01 events/6 34 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.02 events/7 35 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 cpuset 36 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 khelper 37 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 netns 38 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 async/mgr 39 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 pm 41 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.02 sync_supers 42 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.01 bdi-default 43 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kintegrityd/0 44 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kintegrityd/1 45 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kintegrityd/2 46 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kintegrityd/3 47 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kintegrityd/4 48 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kintegrityd/5 49 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kintegrityd/6 50 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kintegrityd/7 51 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/0 52 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.00 kblockd/1 53 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0 0:00.02 kblockd/2 54 root 20 0 000 S0 0.0

Just to get a feeling for how much the load is, could you attach/paste the output of "sudo top -b -n 1"? -- [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel] Playback problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625036 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 625036] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel] Playback problem
I first noticed the problem playing flash video, Shockwave Flash plugin 10.0 r32 in Firefox 3.6.8. Now I notice that the Ubuntu startup sound doesn't play all the way through. I probably would have thought the sound problem was a symptom rather than a cause, except for the syslog messages from alsa-sink.c telling me to report this: Aug 27 03:04:54 i7-desktop pulseaudio[5709]: alsa-sink.c: ALSA woke us up to write new data to the device, but there was actually nothing to write! Aug 27 03:04:54 i7-desktop pulseaudio[5709]: alsa-sink.c: Most likely this is a bug in the ALSA driver 'snd_hda_intel'. Please report this issue to the ALSA developers. Aug 27 03:04:54 i7-desktop pulseaudio[5709]: alsa-sink.c: We were woken up with POLLOUT set -- however a subsequent snd_pcm_avail() returned 0 or another value < min_avail. Both top and gnome-system-monitor show no processes consuming CPU in unusual quantities, although the system load remains high. -- [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel] Playback problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625036 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 625036] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel] Playback problem
Since both set of test tones worked for you, what application is it that fails? In addition, you're saying your system responds slowly - can you see if any process is eating CPU through e g gnome-system-monitor or top? -- [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel] Playback problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625036 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
