I'm a little confused by the different reports in this ticket. Encrypted partitions are going to be very slow when handling p2p -- Vuze, Deluge, etc. are all bitten by this too. Encrypted partitions and randomized heavy disk IO do not get along well with one another. The recommended workaround would be to download to, and seed from, an unencrypted staging partition, and then move it to the encrypted partition after you've finished sharing it via BitTorrent. However there are also a couple of people in this ticket who have reported the same behavior on unencrypted partitions. Same here: Ubuntu 10.10, preallocation makes system less responsive. Could we consider an option to allocate disk segments on demand? Happens to me on an encrypted ext4 home folder. Transmission first hangs, using a lot of CPU, then dies and uses 96% of the CPU. Here Ubuntu is using 3 partitions: swap, root and home. The last two are using ext3 v1.0. I haven't modified Transmission's settings and things downloaded by it (seem to) go straight into my home folder. If this is relevant: on the same HDD I have a few other partitions with a recovery utility, windows vista and dell mediadirect installed, from which the first uses fat32 and the others use ntfs.
