[Bug 696104] Re: nvidia 320m locks up
Alex Mayorga, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect 696104 ** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 553789 10de:0a3c [MASTER] [GT21x] X freeze/crash with nouveau driver ** Tags added: bios-outdated-r0210y5 ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau Just had Empathy (one IRC and one MSN window) and Mozilla Minefield (~15 tabs) running and the screen locked up and stopped responding to mouse clicks or keyboard input. [Bug 696104] Re: nvidia 320m locks up
Hi Alex, I can take care of forwarding the bug itself, if you'd be able to follow up with the upstream developers. https://bugs.freedesktop.org//show_bug.cgi?id=33357 Please subscribe yourself to the bug (add yourself to the CC list). They may ask for more info or request you test stuff. In particular, they may want you to test newer versions of the kernel, X, and -nouveau; the xorg-edgers PPA has somewhat newer X stuff, and I think there are snapshot packages of newer kernels you can find if they do. Or, build the upstream components from the git trees if you prefer to test the absolute latest bits. Btw, looking at your screen photo, I see you're still using unity. Unfortunately one of the side-effects of uninstalling libgl1-mesa-dri- experimental is that you don't have the 3D functionality that Unity requires. As a workaround for the time being, I would suggest running with Classic Desktop instead and turning off compiz (kill -9 `pidof compiz`), which should take care of the graphical corruption. If your system still freezes under those conditions, that would be worth mentioning on the upstream bug report. ** Bug watch added: freedesktop.org Bugzilla #33357 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=33357 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/696104 Title: nvidia 320m locks up -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 696104] Re: nvidia 320m locks up
From the upstream discussion on a referenced bug, it sounds like one way to diagnose this is to compile http://0x04.net/cgit/index.cgi/pgtest then get the system back into its frozen state, and then get the output of ./peek 0x40 0x1 after the lockup. ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/696104 Title: nvidia 320m locks up -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 696104] Re: nvidia 320m locks up
Thanks for the extra info Alex. Don't worry about the /sys files - nouveau doesn't actually place anything useful in those files (the -intel driver puts stuff there in case of gpu, which is probably why it was recommended to collect it). The file that we need is the output of 'dmesg' from while the system is locked up. So either reproduce the lockup or wait until it occurs again, then ssh into the box and run 'dmesg dmesg.txt' and attach that file. Next, after collecting that, please turn off 3D - uninstalling mesa-dri- experimental is probably the most sure-fire way of doing that - and then see whether you can reproduce the lock up. Guessing it will not lock up after that. If it *does*, then we can take the bug to upstream to look into (they don't yet give support for 3D). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/696104 Title: nvidia 320m locks up -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 696104] Re: nvidia 320m locks up
Bryce, I've yet to figure out steps to reproduce it, but it seems completely random. It looked up again today, I ssh into it and ran apport-collect on it FWIW.
[Bug 696104] Re: nvidia 320m locks up
New findings: - The lock up remains after a suspend/resume cycle - If I run unity the right click menus don't show, the lock up appears after some time and some time after the lock up there's video corruption (attached), mouse cursor still shows and moves even after the corruption - When running unity pgrep compiz reports 1450 (below) - Per instructions from #ubuntu-x I managed to capture files under /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0 and /sys/kernel/debug/dri/64 Let me know which if any of the files should I submit. alex-mayo...@vpccw1ffxl:~$ pgrep compiz 1450 ** Attachment added: Photo of the video corruption on unity. https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-nouveau/+bug/696104/+attachment/1789714/+files/09012011087.jpg -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/696104 Title: nvidia 320m locks up -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 696104] Re: nvidia 320m locks up
From the log it looks like you booted at 1pm, booted again at 1:24pm (was that due to a freeze?) and then used sysrq commands at 5pm (did it freeze then too?) Unfortunately, no error messages are shown in that log. Not sure of the next steps for how to troubleshoot nouveau lockups... hopefully RAOF can chime in with ideas. You mentioned you've encountered the freeze several more times. Any chance you've been able to pinpoint down steps to reproduce it reliably?
