[Bug 779849] Re: dbus-daemon consumes 100% CPU

2011-12-20 Thread John Charonko
I just wanted to report that the update to Kubuntu 11.10 seems to have
fixed the problems I was having. I'm guessing that the upstream fix to
kdelibs resolved the bug causing kpackagekitsmarticon to grab too many
files, as expected.

I suggest marking this as fixed.

[Bug 779849] Re: dbus-daemon consumes 100% CPU

2011-09-15 Thread John Charonko
What's the timeline for getting an update from upstream KDE on this
rolled into an Kubuntu bugfix? Is there any way for me to help
accelerate things? I know nothing about the way these updates get
built, but this problem is affecting LOTS of people (including me) and
it would be nice to get some motion from a developer on this. It's
really frustrating to know that there's a fix out there (since June!),
but to have no indication that anyone is working on this at Kubuntu.

How do I go about pulling the known fix from KDE, testing it with
Kubuntu, and building a distribution-specific patch? Shouldn't this be
pretty easy?

For reference, a partial list of related bugs not yet mentioned here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus/+bug/680444 (marked as fix
released, but it's not)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus/+bug/737170 (duplicate of the
680444)
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus/+bug/713157 (my version of the
same bug)

2011-09-15 Thread John Charonko
Incidentally, this bug should probably be marked as a duplicate of
680444 (or vis-a-versa) ASSUMING that we can get 680444 switched back
from Fixed to an active status. I think one reason that it's been so
hard to get traction on this is that so many versions of the bug reports
keep getting marked as fixed, when they aren't. When that happens, they
aren't easily searchable, and get ignored by devs looking for something
to do.

[Bug 779849] Re: dbus-daemon consumes 100% CPU

2011-06-06 Thread Bernd Rothert
I had to reboot regularly after a few days because of this problem.
dbus-daemon took 100% CPU with too many open files (strace) and dbus
communication came to a halt.

Like Warren Jones mentioned in https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=261180#c4
dbus-daemon as well as kpackagekitsmarticon have lots of open sockets and it
helps to:

killall kpackagekitsmarticon

KDE recovered - no need to reboot.

Happened for me as well, dbus-daemon (a fork of it) started to use 100%
CPU when I tried to start thunderbird, which never came up. It did not
stop when I killed the thunderbird process manually, but it did stop
when I also killed nepumuk-server (which I read was a candidate, too).

Hope this helps

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus/+bug/381063
Bug report on KDE BTS: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=261180
Some people link the problem to kpackagekitsmarticon:
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=689794#c8

At the time the problem started, there were no applications running
(except Plasma Desktop with the typical plasmoids plus CWP and
superkaramba). I was beside the computer when I noticed the CPU fan
speeding up.

I hope this helps.

2011-05-17 Thread David García
Hi,

I've just noticed this problem after 6 days of uptime in my Kubuntu
Natty clean install.

As stated by others, dbus-daemon has too many open files.
Running sudo strace -p ... repeats the following lines:

accept4(3, 0xbfd773dc, [16], SOCK_CLOEXEC) = -1 EMFILE (Too many open files)
fcntl64(-1, F_GETFD)= -1 EBADF (Bad file descriptor)

Almost the same happens here but the lines lightly differ:

accept4(3, 0x7fff82bf29f0, [16], SOCK_CLOEXEC) = -1 EMFILE (Too many open files)
fcntl(-1, F_GETFD)  = -1 EBADF (Bad file descriptor)
poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=5, events=POLLIN}, {fd=6, events=POLLIN},
{fd=9, events=POLLIN}, {fd=12, events=POLLIN}, {fd=13, events=POLLIN}, {fd=14,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=15, events=POLLIN}, {fd=16, events=POLLIN}, {fd=17,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=19, events=POLLIN}, {fd=21, events=POLLIN}, {fd=22,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=23, events=POLLIN}, {fd=20, events=POLLIN}, {fd=24,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=25, events=POLLIN}, {fd=27, events=POLLIN}, {fd=28,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=29, events=POLLIN}, {fd=30, events=POLLIN}, {fd=32,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=31, events=POLLIN}, {fd=35, events=POLLIN}, {fd=37,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=40, events=POLLIN}, {fd=36, events=POLLIN}, {fd=39,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=38, events=POLLIN}, {fd=48, events=POLLIN}, {fd=50,
events=POLLIN}, {fd=51, events=POLLIN}, ...], 1018, -1) = 1 ([{fd=3,
revents=POLLIN}])

The only difference is that clock_gettime() call is missing.

Uptime is 4.25 days.

2011-05-09 Thread Robert Clark
I am experiencing the same issue. I have the latest KDE/natty installs,
and I believe this 100% CPU saturation was triggered, when I was moving
between folders in Thunderbird 3.10, thunderbird had hung. Yup, sure
enough I just killed thunderbird, and dbus-daemon is no longer at 100%
CPU utilization. After starting thunderbird the dbus-daemon process goes
back to 100% CPU utilization. I have tried this 3 times, and the
starting/running of thunderbird is clearly related to the 100 CPU
utilization of the dbus-daemon process. I'm going to reboot the system
now, and I will update this bug report when the system comes back up.

Here is the output from top:

2011-05-09 Thread Robert Clark
Following up on the previous comment of mine. As I was closing down
google-chrome, firefox Tomboy with Thunderbird 3.10 still running, I
noticed the the dbus-daemon utilization had returned to near 0% I don't
think that the other Apps shutting down had anything to do with the the
dbus-daemon utilization returning to 0%, as navigating mail folders in
Thunderbird certainly appears to have triggered the dbus_daemon CPU
process utilization of 100%.

I have rebooted the machine, and will keep an eye on the System
Monitor window to see if dbus-daemon hist 100%
