[Bug 784740] Re: Wifi can't be activated if hardware switch is off when starting Ubuntu
I just checked and this bug seems to have been solved. I got used to it, so I didn't check regularly. So I can't tell you which version exactly sorted it out, sorry. Thanks to everyone! ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Fix Released -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/784740 Title: Wifi can't be activated if hardware switch is off when starting Ubuntu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/784740/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 784740] Re: Wifi can't be activated if hardware switch is off when starting Ubuntu
flrtx, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested and remove the tag: needs-upstream-testing This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the text: needs-upstream-testing If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags: kernel-fixed-upstream kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags: kernel-bug-exists-upstream kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags: kernel-unable-to-test-upstream kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding. ** Tags added: needs-upstream-testing regression-release ** Description changed: Binary package hint: network-manager Activating wifi using the hardware switch of my Dell Inspiron 1525 works well except for one situation: If the hardware switch is off when starting Ubuntu, I can't get wifi working, neither by activating the - hardware switch nor by the network-manager-applet. [Bug 784740] Re: Wifi can't be activated if hardware switch is off when starting Ubuntu
This bug sadly still isn't fixed for my Dell Inspiron 1525 and I now encoutered a similar one on an Acer Aspire One D150-0Bw. Same problem: wifi can't be switched on if hardware switch is deactivated during booting. Strangely, even my usual workaround (rfkill unblock all) didn't work here. Perhaps you could look into this again. [Bug 784740] Re: Wifi can't be activated if hardware switch is off when starting Ubuntu
I'm coming back here and I'm hoping to reactive this bugreport since this problem still exists. It seemed to have vanished some time ago but reappeared in 11.10 Oneiric (I forgot to mention this here). Now, I've upgraded to 12.04 Precise and the bug still exists. I would be very pleased if this problem could be addressed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/784740 Title: Wifi can't be activated if hardware switch is off when starting Ubuntu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/784740/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The workaround works. Thanks! [Bug 784740] Re: Wifi can't be activated if hardware switch is off when starting Ubuntu
It seems as though the kernel driver for that switch/wifi device are misreporting the killswitch status. Reassigning to 'linux'. As a workaround, please see if running 'rfkill unblock all' releases the killswitch and allows you to connect to wifi networks.
