it looks as if bug 364984 should be merged with this one as they
 describe the same problem, imho.

however both reports have plenty of duplicates and launchpad does not
handle merging such bugs very well i think.

maybe one of you could have a look at this other bug and either mark it
as duplicate (or close it and redirect people here) or work out the
 differences between the reports...

[Bug 85969] Re: Java Docs Package Won't Install

2010-01-11 Thread Monkey
I confirm this bug in Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala 32 bits. I´ve done: sudo
aptitude install sun-java6 and the Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error
code (1). Then I´ve done sudo dpkg --configure sun-java6-doc
Configuring sun-java6-doc (6-15-1) ...
This package is an installer package, it does not actually contain the
JDK documentation. You will need to go download one of the
archives:

jdk-6u10-docs.zip jdk-6u10-docs-ja.zip

(choose the non-update version if this is the first installation).
Please visit

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/

now and download. The file should be owned by root.root and be copied
to /tmp.

2009-12-22 Thread Michael Nagel
it looks as if bug 364984 should be merged with this one as they
describe the same problem, imho.

however both reports have plenty of duplicates and launchpad does not
handle merging such bugs very well i think.

maybe one of you could have a look at this other bug and either mark it
as duplicate (or close it and redirect people here) or work out the
differences between the reports...

I have tried downloading over and over, tried various suggestions and

The only reason I was even looking at Java is because I couldn't open

elsewhere so do I really need Java? I don't think so at present so I
will try to live without it

About this problem...
The sun-java6-doc is just a installer, i know that's annoying. you've to
download from another place AND mannualy copy and re-run the command.

But if you use Netbeans, you will see the difference.

[Bug 85969] Re: Java Docs Package Won't Install

2009-04-29 Thread James Stansell
Ken, the simplest (and most sensible, IMHO) action is to purge the sun-
java6-doc package from your system. You probably don't need it.

If you do want to use the java docs they're readily available online.
Or essentially the same information is available in the openjdk6 docs
package. And it doesn't have any installation hassles.

-james.

Thank you James, I haven't had a clue as to where  to even  start, I
will take your advice. Ken

This package is an installer package, it does not actually contain the
JDK documentation.  You will need to go download one of the
archives:

    jdk-6-doc.zip jdk-6-doc-ja.zip

(choose the non-update version if this is the first installation).
Please visit

    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/

now and download.  The file should be owned by root.root and be copied
to /tmp.

[Press RETURN to try again, 'no' + RETURN to abort]

We should probably use wget or something to grab these files and save
users the hassle. This is annoying and unnecessary.

[Bug 85969] Re: Java Docs Package Won't Install

2009-02-05 Thread GunnerGuyven
Was going to mention that sun had renamed their downloadable to: jdk-
6u10-docs.zip. But I see several have mentioned this already. Renaming
it to jdk-6-doc.zip as the installer expects seems to have no ill
effect.

Honestly I don't think this is that big of a hassle (but then I've done
it so often its become part of the routine). If this is how you work
around the license issue, then kudos. It would be nice for the docs to
be included with the license we're already accepting to use the JDK
itself, but that's a Sun issue.

I'm not sure that the file need actually be owned by root, which is
where some number of users are getting hung up in concept. But just for
posterity, that's pretty crazy easy in a sudo system like ubuntu:

sudo chown root.root jdk-6-doc.zip

You'll be prompted for your password, and the deed is done. You'll have
to use sudo for the subsequent move operation as well, though.

2009-02-05 Thread Ken Anderson
Thank you for taking the time to respond, I am having issues downloading
updates of all sorts, it always comes back to the Java not loading
(owned by the root...). I have downloaded java 5 java 6, they are on
my desktop but I can't get them to install.  I don't really comprehend
much of this. Is there someone who could help me complete this process,
possibly via phone? I would be very grateful, Ken.

[Bug 85969] Re: Java Docs Package Won't Install

2009-01-27 Thread RickG
I manually downloaded the docs into the same folder that I was
installing the software from. The link I found was
http://www.filewatcher.com/m/jdk-6-doc.zip.54898268.0.0.html. The
installation went fine after that and so far everything works as
expected.

Re: [Bug 85969] Re: Java Docs Package Won't Install

2008-11-22 Thread Cuong Truong
or you can do as following to get rid of this (this is what I just found
yesterday for my laptop!):

1. Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, download the
jdk-6u10-docs.zip file.
2. Change the name jdk-6u10-docs.zip to jdk-6-doc.zip
3. Use command: sudo cp place where u keep the zip
file/jdk-6-doc.zip /tmp
4. Next time, if u are prompted with that pop-up, type Enter and wait
for a few seconds, the problem then will be solved.

regards,
Cuong
