[Bug 90749] Re: Deluge 0.5 in feisty

2007-04-12 Thread Bas
That is exactly why I'm reading this thread right now: apt-get deluge-torrent
did not do any tricks. And yeah, I am f**king happy with the improvement!
Great work Zach!
.51 or .52 should definately be in one of Feisty's updates.

2007-04-12 Thread shirishag75
Ok couple of comments, for me 0.52 does not work for me. Although I think I
uploaded the bug report to tracs do not remember the details atm. I did try the
svn checkout also but even that did not work for me. I did delete the
~/config/deluge/.state file but still it did not work. There were no
instructions on the README as to how to un-install if some issue is there.
Also lets say, a certain version does not work, how to update it to
the latest working copy of subversion. I know both these things are outside the
domain of this bug-report but it would be useful for both of us, as I would be
happy to give you bug-reports if there is a way to that.

given that 0.5.1 is still in development, it seems odd that you're using

I do seriously hope this does go in feisty. The only application which
has been stopping me from moving fully onto ubuntu. I hate the UI of
ktorrent while deluge feels nice, homely. There are only few things
which I would like to see :-

1. Encryption support:- supposed to be in the upcoming release
2. Ability to have some static port or uPnP if the router/modem supports that
3. Ability to have filters like the bluetack filter
4. Ability to turn on off dht at will
5. Being able to turn on off the application without the torrent being hanged.

+1 for me to go into feisty repositories

[Bug 90749] Re: Deluge 0.5 in feisty

2007-04-06 Thread Daniel T Chen
The kicker for me is Zach's statement above:

In short, Deluge isn't really done yet, and it's still in rapid
development, which is why I'd almost rather it not be in the repository
at all, sadly. I just don't want users to look at whatever version winds
up packaged in the repositories and think that it's done.[0]

Considering that we should err on the side of conservative measures
because we are fewer than FOURTEEN days from release, we should push for
the binary removal of the current version if there is no straightforward
manner in which to backport a fix for the it does corrupt most of its
downloads issue[1]. If a binary removal is not possible, then we should
simply push for a source+binary removal.

Keep in mind that feisty+1 opens soon, and a newer source version of
deluge-torrent is a candidate for feisty-backports.

With the above three points in mind, I am stating a vehement -1 for this
UVF exception.

[Bug 90749] Re: Deluge 0.5 in feisty

2007-04-04 Thread Daniel Holbach
* Merged deluge and python-libtorrent projects
* The frontend and backend are now independent of
each other
* Proper build and installation scripts rather than
the old method of simply copying the .py files
* Can now add torrents to a current instance of Deluge,
allowing .torrent files to be associated with Deluge
from a web / file browser
* Fixed a memory leak in the cpp backend
* Fix bug where torrents containing multiple files corrupted downloads
* Overall resource usage down from 0.4
* Miscellaneous GUI work, now more Gnome-ish
* Horizontal labeled tabs in bottom pane rather than icons
* Proper use of GtkTreeView (old code was hack-ish)
* Support close-to-tray
* Can customize interface (show/hide columns and details pane)
* Save GUI status to config file and reload on next run

[Bug 90749] Re: Deluge 0.5 in feisty

2007-03-31 Thread Dave Underwood
I'd just like to add my 2c worth here and add my support to this
proposal.

Significant improvements have been made in 0.5 over 0.4, particularly in
relation to desktop intergration Gnome HIG compliance and system
resource usage.

As Deluge is listed on the forums as a third party application, it is
quite likely that new / inexperienced users to Ubuntu looking for
'alternative' bit torrent clients will be attracted to Deluge.

In which case easy access to 0.5, based on the above arguments, would
result in a much better 'user experience'.

Cheers.

[Bug 90749] Re: Deluge 0.5 in feisty

2007-03-22 Thread Zach Tibbitts
I'll look into it, and see if the new code fixes these issues. The
problem is that now some completely different bugs have been cropping
up. While the one persistent bug in 0.5 is a relatively easy fix
(removing your .state file and loading a clean state of Deluge), it can
be rather annoying. Both branches have their problems, but 0.5 contains
some usability improvements over 0.4. Also, 0.4 can potentially corrupt
downloads if selective downloading is enabled.

In short, Deluge isn't really done yet, and it's still in rapid
development, which is why I'd almost rather it not be in the repository
at all, sadly. I just don't want users to look at whatever version
winds up packaged in the repositories and think that it's done.

I'm already at work fixing the problems that have cropped up in 0.5, and
I'll see if any of the previously reported bugs on Deluge are resolved
in the new release.

[Bug 90749] Re: Deluge 0.5 in feisty

2007-03-20 Thread Zach Tibbitts
Ok, I've resubscribed motu-uvf.

Attached to this post is a .tar.gz containing the requested diffs and
Changelog.

Also, I'd like to make it clear that I am the developer of this
application, if it isn't already.

A few notes about the included files:

The two projects, deluge and python-libtorrent have been merged as of
the 0.5 release. because of this, the directory structure is different
between the two releases. The files deluge.diff and diffstat.txt are
diffs of the unmodified Deluge tarballs. However, I have also included
two files, deluge.alt.diff, and diffstat.alt.txt. In these two files, I
rearranged the source directories a little bit so that a more relevant
diff would be produced. I also removed the libtorrent source code from
the tarball so that it wouldn't be included in the diff. The libtorrent
code was in the python-libtorrent tarball in 0.4, and so it is in the
Deluge tarball now. Because of this, a straight diff of the source
makes the changes seem more dramatic than they are by listing several
thousand additions. The libtorrent code has not changed from 0.4 to
0.5.

Deluge has no upstream Changelog or NEWS file, but I've written a
changelog listing what has been put into the 0.5 release, and included
that in the attached archive.

Finally, build.log is a log of the package being built in prevu.

Deluge 0.5 was uploaded to Debian Sid as of yesterday, so if you do
hopefully decide to allow this in, then a simple sync should work fine.

I'm sorry to occupy your time with this, but I've been working on Deluge
almost non-stop for the last couple of months in order to fix all of the
big problems that it experienced. I'd hate to see Ubuntu users using a
release as terribly broken as 0.4 was. If Deluge 0.5 can't make it into
feisty, then I'd rather not have it in the repositories at all, and I
think that some of the above commenters agree with me.

Thank you for all your time and work,

Zach Tibbitts

[Bug 90749] Re: Deluge 0.5 in feisty

2007-03-18 Thread Zach Tibbitts
** Description changed:

+ Update: 0.5 is now final
+
I've just packaged the 0.5rc2 .tar.gz of Deluge.

I know asking for a release candidate to be uploaded is asking a lot,
but it will be final shortly, most likely in a matter of days, and 0.5
fixes many critical bugs that plagued the 0.4 branch. The reason I've
been fairly persistent asking about getting 0.5 into feisty is that, as
this is the first version of Ubuntu to ship with Deluge in it's
repositories, I'd rather it not have the incredibly buggy 0.4 branch in
it. The 0.5 branch is a complete rewrite, that addresses the following
  issues:

   * Opening a .torrent file in Deluge is now possible, either from a
webbrowser such as Firefox or file browser such as Nautilus.
   * A memory leak that may affect the current stable version, 0.4.1, was found
and fixed during 0.5 development
   * Torrents with multiple files will not download correctly in 0.4.1, and the
result is that all the downloaded files are corrupted.
   * The interface has been tweaked a little to be more Gnomish, by better
conforming to the HIG.
   * Overall, 0.5 uses significantly less resources than 0.4, both CPU and RAM.

Now, in the FreezeExceptionProcess wiki, it instructs to upload a few
different files, but I can't exactly produce these for the following
  reasons:

   * It asks for a diff of the upstream tarballs. As 0.5 is a complete rewrite
from 0.4, the two hardly share a line of code, and thus a diff is more or less
irrelevant.
   * We don't have a Changelog in our source tarball, but if absolutely
necessary I could write one.
   * I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to packaging. I've gone through the
Debian New Maintainer's Guide, and used that in addition to the existing
packaging for Deluge as a reference for building my own packages. The process
didn't involve pbuilder, nor do I know how to use pbuilder, so I can't exactly
provide a log of it.

I have packaged the 0.5 RC and everything, .orig.tar.gz, .diff.gz, and
- .dsc files, can be found here: http://deluge-
- torrent.org/downloads/0.5_debs/ The package builds and installs just
- fine for me.

As I've said, I really hope that this package could make it into feisty.
I realize that it's late, but Deluge is a universe app, and as it's not
completely vital to Ubuntu, it shouldn't cause any problems by uploading
  a package at this point.

  Thanks for your time,

Please let it be in Feisty.

Indeed, version 0.5 is significantly better. We should either have 0.5
uploaded, or remove 0.4 from Universe. Of course, it would be great to
have it in. I love this software, it is for sure the best torrent option
for gnome.

0.5 is way better than 0.4, I also think it should be on Feisty... It is
now decently reliable and more feature-full than the actual torrent
client in Ubuntu : that should be enough for a place in the repos.

 Please attach the requested info.

As I stated in the original post, most of it is either irrelevant, or I
don't know how to generate it. I'm no expert in packaging, I just wrote
the thing.

If someone here is reading this and could generate any of the required
files, I'd appreciate it. I think the only one that applies that I
can't produce is the pbuilder log.

I can get to work on writing up a Changelog file, if that will help.

I won't sugarcoat it. Not being able to open .torrent files from
Firefox using deluge in 0.4 is crap!

I've been using the .deb package and it's worked on two downloads so
far. I especially like the tray icon forcing me to replace transmission
use with deluge.

Hope it gets in Feisty!

2007-03-08 Thread Daniel Miles
It is difficult, because while it is not a major package, it is not
likely to break much, but given it is not a major package, is it worth
the risk?

Having said that, I'd support including it for the different featureset
and so we have something easily available for the GNOME desktop that
measures up to Ktorrent.

I'm worried more about the risk of leaving 0.4 in, as it does corrupt
most of its downloads. I've been working on this release several hours
a day for the past month or so to try to get it in so that feisty
wouldn't ship with a horribly broken Deluge.

.5 is much more usable than .4
Including the latest release in Ubuntu would make it much easier on the authors
to keep going forward then to be maintaining a buggy previous release.
