[Bug 996501] Re: Keyboard not working in lenovo s-10 3c

2012-05-13 Thread Chetan Chauhan
Unlike windows , in linux the default user account , in your case
"prakriti" is not an administrator.

So as Christopher mentioned quite clearly in his post above -
"After saving the file execute via the Terminal:
sudo update-grub"

Only if you run the command by prefixing "sudo" or "gksudo" before it
will you be able to get the permissions to change files owned by the
"root" user.

Re: [Bug 996501] Re: Keyboard not working in lenovo s-10 3c

2012-05-11 Thread Prakriti Gupta
Well, after executing 1st command viz. gksudo /etc/default/grub <>
it asked me some password, and entered the one, by which, i am logged in
with, in Ubuntu.
Then I opened the file /etc/default/grub and performed the editing, but
while saving, message came as "You do no have permissions necessary to save
the file. Please check that you typed the location correctly and try again".

Now what to do?

[Bug 996501] Re: Keyboard not working in lenovo s-10 3c

2012-05-11 Thread Chetan Chauhan
Would like to point out an errata above.
You can set GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT and it will work,
but it is actually better to set GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi=off noapic"

Since that will enable the keyboard for recovery mode also.

[Bug 996501] Re: Keyboard not working in lenovo s-10 3c

2012-05-11 Thread Chetan Chauhan
I can confirm that upto kernel 3.1 the bios "bug" in Lenovo s10-3c will make
the keyboard to NOT work if ACPI is enabled.
I doubt if Lenovo bios update will fix the problem since with this model (and
perhaps others) , Lenovo supplies only Windows and do not support any Linux. I
tried a few BIOS updates and they didn't fix anything.

The only way to get it to work is to edit /etc/default/grub and change the
below line -
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi=off noapic"

then run update-grub.
I had to connect a USB keyboard then i could edit the file above and restart
ubuntu.

Also, the trackpad works fine whether ACPI is enabled or not. With ACPI
disabled the laptop works great under XUbuntu 10.04 for me except I am
unable to check the battery level in Ubuntu. And the keyboard works !

[Bug 996501] Re: Keyboard not working in lenovo s-10 3c

2012-05-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
prakriti Gupta, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. As per your Bug Description, your BIOS may not be fully updated.
If you update the BIOS, is your problem resolved?

If not, if you could also please test the latest upstream kernel
available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream
developers to examine the issue. Refer to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This
can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag
located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-
upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not
boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 996501] Re: Keyboard not working in lenovo s-10 3c

2012-05-08 Thread Dmitry Ogorodnikov
Instruction is:
1. Find this bug for previous versions.
2. Read the discussion.
Shortly, you should call Lenovo support and ask for new BIOS (call, I said,
don't download it from site). Follow update instruction shipped with BIOS, and
keyboard will work without any ubuntu-related actions.
