I can also confirm that audio over HDMI is now working - Thanks guys!

Re: [Bug 793592] Re: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888, Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all

2011-09-03 Thread Charles Timms
Yes, I've also found this to be true on Fedora at any rate...
Is there anything that can be done to determine the cause of the bug from
booting the Studio Hybrid from either the 10.04 and/or Maverick release CDs
and then executing some commands in terminal to find out what the
differences are?
If I boot from CD with either of these releases I get sound over HDMI - on
11.04 I get nothing!
If you think this will help identify the root cause of the bug, as a low
tech user, what commands should I try

By the way Fedora 16 (kernel 3.0 and 3.1) and OpenSuse 11.4 (2.6.37) do
not work either (an hdmi output is listed in the sound control panel,
but still no sound).

I've now carried out the tests you suggested below, but unfortunately I
still did not get any sound over HDMI.

@Charles, looking more closely at your hardware, you have an HDMI port
that's integrated on the analog codec as a digital port, which means
it's not using any of the -hdmi modules at all.

Is the following terminal command giving sound on HDMI:

speaker-test -D hdmi:Intel -c 2 -t sine

If it does not, could you try executing this command

alsamixer -D hw:Intel

Use arrow keys to find the IEC958 Default PCM control, then press M
to mute it. Exit alsamixer with Esc. Then try again:

speaker-test -D hdmi:Intel -c 2 -t sine

2011-08-29 Thread Charles Timms
Hi Renaud David

OK you can tell from my reply that I'm in no way a technical person but am
an enthusiastic supporter and promoter of Ubuntu.
Therefore, what I don't understand from your reply David is that in earlier
releases of Ubuntu (10 series), when presumably there were individual
modules that dealt with audio over HDMI my Dell Studio Hybrid systems worked
fine. Now that these individual modules have been combined into one in
Ubuntu (11 series) audio over HDMI just doesn't work. Surely this points to
where the problem lies?

@Renaud, this is by design. Latest kernel versions don't have atihdmi,
nvhdmi and intelhdmi. They instead only have one snd-hda-codec-hdmi
module that covers all of them.

2011-06-23 Thread Charles Timms
Hello David

Many apologies for not getting back to you sooner on this...

I have been trying to follow the instructions and links you provided to
gather the requested information concerning bug 793592
After a fresh install of 10.10 the HDMI video and audio are both working
properly.

However, the sample command line on the web site to obtain the ALSA info did
not work:-

kitchen@kitchen-Studio-Hybrid-140g:~$ bash
/tmp/bash_alsa-info.sh --no-upload

bash: /tmp/bash_alsa-info.sh: No such file or directory

I had to modify it to this:-

kitchen@kitchen-Studio-Hybrid-140g:~$ bash /tmp/alsa-info.sh --no-upload

Your ALSA information is in /tmp/alsa-info.txt.KptnOEjwSD

Moving to the next step, I'm having difficulty downloading and installing
the updated ALSA drivers on 10.10. It makes no difference whether I use the
command line method or Synaptic Package Manager, I get the following
errors:-

kitchen@kitchen-Studio-Hybrid-140g:~$ sudo add-apt-repository
ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa

[sudo] password for kitchen:

gpg: keyserver timed out

gpg: keyserver receive failed: keyserver error

kitchen@kitchen-Studio-Hybrid-140g:~$ sudo add-apt-repository

With Synaptic Package Manager I get:-

W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net maverick Release: The following
signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available:

Can you help me past this point please? Thanks!

Subject: [Bug 793592] Re: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888,Black Digital

It is not easy to know if this is a audio driver or video driver
problem, but ways to figure it out include trying:

1) 10.10
2) 10.10 with upgraded alsa drivers according to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules (it is
especially interesting to see if upgrading actually breaks the HDMI audio)
3) 11.04

And for each of these three, attach an alsainfo according to
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/AlsaInfo

If there is a difference in the alsa-info data, and that difference in
turn corresponds to when it's broken and when it works, we have
somewhere to start. If not, it's probably a video driver problem.

Re: [Bug 793592] Re: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888, Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all

2011-06-16 Thread Charles Timms
Will his extra information will help identify the cause of no audio via HDMI
in 11.04 with ALC888?

When the the Dell Studio Hybrid 140g is booted from the installation cds of
both Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10, under Sound Preferences Hardware Internal
Audio the following options are listed:-
Analog Stereo Input
Analog Stereo Duplex (IEC958)
Analog Stereo Duplex (IEC958) + Analog Stereo Input
Analog Stereo Output
Analog Stereo Duplex

Regardless of which sound output/duplex option is selected sound IS heard
via HDMI - it works perfectly

On 11.04, as previously reported, under Sound Preferences Hardware
Internal Audio the following options are listed:-
Analog Stereo Input
Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output
Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input
Analog Stereo Output
Analog Stereo Duplex

IEC958 has been replaced by HDMI in the available options
Regardless of which sound output/duplex option is selected sound IS NOT
heard via HDMI
Running Gnome ALSA Mixer on 11.04 lists two SP/DIF only. No HDMI shows.

Any further help/info would be greatly appreciated as my whole house
multimedia system is now grounded!!

Thanks for your report. You say that you were using HDMI, however at
least in 11.04, I do not see any HDMI devices on your system. Could you
please try updating your audio drivers, as outlined at the following
URL, and report back as to whether that helps? If that doesn't help,
please run apport-collect 793592 in a terminal, so we can get an
update on your hardware information.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules

Thanks again.

Re: [Bug 793592] Re: [Studio Hybrid 140g, Realtek ALC888, Black Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all

2011-06-08 Thread Charles Timms
Hello Luke

Thanks for your assistance.

I have now updated the audio drivers following the instructions on the
supplied Wiki link - using Terminal.
Unfortunately, following a reboot there was no change. I have video via HDMI
but no audio.

Incidentally, I have a second Dell Studio Hybrid 140G with the same
specification as the above.
This one too had a fresh install of 11.04. It outputs its video via DVI and
audio via optical SP/DIF.
This configuration works fine.
I've tried connecting this machine too via HDMI, just in case there might be
a hardware fault with the other, and the result is exactly the same - i.e.
video works via HDMI but the audio does not.

On both machines, when I go to Sound Preferences Hardware Internal Audio
the following options are listed:-
Analog Stereo Input
Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output
Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output + Analog Stereo Input
Analog Stereo Output
Analog Stereo Duplex

I will now run the apport-collect 793592 so you can get information on my
hardware

Best Regards

Charles
