[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks
Matthew Garrett is right, it seems NOT to be an Ubuntu issue. I managed to get the *same* behaviour under GRUB. In BIOS or GRUB, the harddisk makes the click only once, after that it's silent. That's because noone is accessing the drive anymore. But in GRUB, you can browse the filesystem. So if I list some directory, the harddisk audibly loads and after a few seconds again unloads. The difference is, under Ubuntu, someone is always accessing the disk, therefore it unloads/loads constantly over and over again. Windows must automatically set the APM values to another values right after boot (or they might not be accessing/probing the disk all the time, even when idle). Therefore, the values which everyone complains about are really set from the manufacturer. The question is if it's wrong. Some people may see that unloading disk after 20sec of inactivity is a good thing (less power(?), better security from fall). I can see that hdd manufacturers can set this settings intentionally. The problem is that linux does not allow the disk to stay in the unload mode for even a second. Maybe the culprit is kernel or some program running in the background constantly probing all devices. IF the harddisk stayed unloaded until some read/write activity is needed, all this would be good behaviour. So there are two problems: 1. Ubuntu is touching the disk all the time. The culprit must be found (e.g. some logging daemons) and the behaviour has to be fixed to be more appropriate for desktop/laptop users. Not only it would extend harddisk life but also extend battery-time on laptops. 2. Until previous bug is fixed, Ubuntu should check for this kind of APM values and tweak them a little bit not to destroy the harddisk in a few months. This is clearly a linux problem (the disk should stay unloaded for some time and it doesn't) so Ubuntu should provide some patch to save customers disks until the whole linux-harddisk-thing is written with more concern of desktop/laptop users and not only servers. For those who didn't read carefully I sum up: The problem is not in the APM and disk unloading quickly, the problem is in the disk loading up right after unloading. -- default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/59695 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 156981] Mislabeled Button, Close is really Abort!
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnomebaker Gnomebaker displays a dialog titled Baking which displays the status of the Burn, along with a button labeled Close. However pressing the Close button does cause a confirmation dialog and immediately closes the window. This also effectively aborts the burn operation. Other applications can be closed but they still run (e.g., Amarok, Pidgin IM, etc.) so the end-result of this close button might be confusing to some. Should not the close button first prompt the user to verify close (and terminate any baking that might be in progress)? [Bug 156551] All in all you guys in development did and are doing one heck of a great job! Thanks,
Hi the reinstall did fix the screen so the wmv file will play however Totem hangs and cannot play a DVD but apart from that everything works fine except sometime the screen says in a small blue area out of range for a moment after it boots up, but once it is running everything is fine. I do think that perhaps Totem has a conflict with some of the Codec files and perhaps a better set of video drivers. But I can see how that could be complicated with so many video cards. However this is a 945gtp board with a standard intel 950 video on board however it does work with the 810 driver. So it must be Totem that cannot play DVD and at times can have a loss of picture. [Bug 156084] Re: Acer laptop: Suspend broken in Gutsy [regression]
After a Feisty-Gusty upgrade I have a similar problem with an IBM X41 tablet. The suspend-to-disk operation seems to take fairly long, but eventually finishes. On resume the boot procedure reaches the Ubuntu splash screen and then stalls indefinitely. Using the suspend key or echo disk /sys/power/state results in the same scenario. I noticed some suggestions elsewhere that this could be related to the graphics driver (the laptop uses i915) - however stopping X does not seem to make a difference. For me it seems that changing HIBERNATE_MODE to shutdown in /etc/default/acpi-support is slightly more successful. On a fresh boot the machine can reliably suspend/resume, but repeating the operation causes it to hang on resume every now and then. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New = Confirmed -- Acer laptop: Suspend broken in Gutsy [regression] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156084 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I still have a problem when shutting down/restarting: KDE shows black screen before the Kubuntu shutdown-splash is correctly shown; do you know if it is related or a new bug? No, I don't have this problem anymore after installing the restricted drivers. Please don't mark it just as solved. [Bug 114331] Re: xserver starts but display is corrupt
Hi Guys, I too have a Fujitsu Scenic with integrated Intel graphics, and I have a similar problem with the release version of 7.10. It was a clean install of the OS, not an upgrade or dual boot. The symptoms are; From power up, the Ubuntu splash screen and progress bar are displayed ok. Once the progress bar reaches the end and the splash screen closes, there is a brief delay then the display corrupts with vertical green, white, blue and black lines. The circular mouse cursor with the rotating dots is also displayed but the dots and cursor freeze. The display then flashes once to black then the vertical lines are displayed again, in a different pattern. The PC freezes at this point and I have to power off to restart it. I can get round this by tapping the F8 key several times as soon as the splash screen closes, and the PC boots normally. I don't know if the F8 key does anything specific or if any F key could be used. I also think that if you reboot the PC, it restarts as normal. It is only when you power up from cold that this happens, but I haven't confirmed this yet. I don't have the exact details of the PC to hand, but I noticed the graphics driver was marked as 'experimental'. I hope this helps. Let me know if you want the exact specs of the machine or more info. Cool. - gnome-panel will adjust its size to fit the 1024x800 VGA display.
