[Bug 158943] gusty - error

2007-10-31 Thread Diego
Public bug reported:

I found 2 problems that come from oldest versions of ubuntu:
1 - The sound mixer is poorly configured by default. This happened to me in
earlier versions as well. While I can hear the sounds, rather than climb or
turn down the volume teacher does not affect reproduction. Besides I hear the
sound test.
2 - The entry of the microphone is not working well. This occurs from the old
versions of ubuntu. It behaves like a filter achieved record sounds more
serious while the treble is atenuedos. That is not happening with me windows so
the error is drivers.

[Bug 158252] Re: dspam won't start: /var/run/dspam missing in tmpfs

2007-10-31 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
I used the following at the beginning of dspam initscript :

[ -d /var/run/dspam ] || { mkdir /var/run/dspam; chown dspam:
/var/run/dspam; }

(Did the same for the sympa initscript)

I believe the chown can be useful in letting the daemon act on its
pidfile once started, isn't it ? If seen some daemons who are unhappy if
their /var/run/something directory doesn't belong to them...

[Bug 158949] Windows and panel objects are not moved the same way

2007-10-31 Thread l0b0
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Background: I've got a 1-line, 4-column panel setup, running compiz, on
Gutsy.

How to reproduce:
- Open a new window.
- Move the window so that part of it is outside the right edge of the desktop.
- right-click the window handle or panel object (still in workspace 1), and
click Move to Workspace Right.

Now, the window is moved one workspace right, but the panel object (that
is, the thing at the bottom of the screen) is moved /two/ panels to the
right.

I'll test this without compiz later.

[Bug 119308] Re: Gutsy shutdown doesn't

2007-10-31 Thread Swâmi Petaramesh
Not sure this is the same bug but :

Recent desktop system (AMD Sempron, NVidia chipset) which was shutting
down perfectly with Feisty now sporadically hangs on shutdown after
upgrade to Gutsy (kernel 2.6.22-14-generic).

Not easy for me to be very specific, the machine is 400 miles away, it's
a friend's machine which I administer from remote using SSH and of
course I have no access to it when hanged on shutdown... According to
the reports I got from her, machine stays forever on shutdown splash
screen and nothing else happens. I have remotely deactivated the splash
screen in grub's menu.lst to see if it can help or check last system
messages from now on.

Syslog doesn't show anything special after such a hang.

She reported to me having had some filesystem errors reported at mount
time after a forced reboot in such situation, so that's possible that
hanging happens before the system is actually completely down.

Machine uses the NVIdia proprietary X11 driver as well as ndiswrapper +
sis163u driver for a Wi-Fi USB thing and I was suspecting one of them to
be the cause of the issue - I've seen that losing the Wi-Fi connection
sometimes hangs the system in Gutsy where it wouldn't happen in Feisty,
although the Windows driver used by ndiswrapper is the same, so I was
suspecting something weird could happen when shutting down networking.

[Bug 156540] Re: High pitch whine on left audio channel with Asus K8N-VM

2007-10-31 Thread James King
I've found a workaround for this issue:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4291307.html?sid=2d09aabef90429f5465f9ee35f12456e#4291307

Specifically, setting the playback mode under System-Preferences-Sound
to ALSA - Advanced Linux Sound Architecture instead of AD198x Analog
and creating setting up /etc/asound.conf as follows:

pcm.upmix_4ch {
   type plug
   slave.pcm surround40
   slave.channels 4
   route_policy duplicate
}

pcm.default upmix_4ch

Unfortunately, this has the side effect of restricting me to a single
application using audio at any given time, but will have to do until
ALSA bug #2889 is fixed.

[Bug 158945] onboard video via incorrect (unichrome pro igp - pm800 and I guess that also similar)

2007-10-31 Thread Diego
Public bug reported:

The driver provided video does not work well.
At first when they enter glxinfo told me that he had installed a driver via
cle266, which has differences with which it should be.
At this point I returned to run (after upgrading the system and install some
programs) and apparently now is whether that should but still with an error
that gave at the outset:
...
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI UniChrome (PM8x0/CN400) 20060710 x86/MMX/SSE2
...
...
Failure segmentation, appears after the show opengl extensions:
Fallo de segmentación (core dumped)

My pc is newly formatted and installation was made from a CD and dropped
without any program added up to a few hours ago but it was from the beginning.
Before it had updated version of this feisty from the same problems (I thought
that was resolved, but not with format)

[Bug 158944] Upgrade tool (7.04 to 7.10) sets login keyboard layout to QWERTY US

2007-10-31 Thread oz
Public bug reported:

An upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 sets the keyboard layout of the login
screen to QWERTY US.

Users with passwords containing keys that are different in this layout
will not be able to log in.

Example: A QWERTZ DE user with a Z in his password will need to type Y instead
at the login screen. But he does not know that.
Even if one account can login, it seems not possible to switch the login
screens config without manually editing config files.
Changing passwords of the accounts will only help, if users know the login
layout and its differences to the one they get after the login and choose the
keys wisely...

I cannot provide you with files, because the users wanted me to erase
the whole system, install 7.10, recreate their accounts and restore
their home directories from the backups.

This workaround has solved the problem for me, but will not for people
without backups... and I know there are some out there.

Maybe one should file a feature request for a back me up now! nag
screen.

I have a toshiba p-105-S6187 with BIOS 3.30 running kernel 2.6.22-14-generic.

Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
and i didnt find it just now but i remember seeing it that is was the conexant

Im pretty new at all this stuff but have a couple questions
Im in Ukraine right now and finally got my conexant modem working but
everything i do to try to fix the sound until now ( i now know these fixes wont
work, like installing linux backports and thing like that) make my modem not
work. I get a modem or device busy when dialing with kppp, gppp and wvdial. i
dont know why im telling this but it might be useful or something :) And i
guess since i bought my driver from linuxant i need to stay with this kernel
right? (or ill have to buy another)

I have been reading a lot about this and the mandriva path fix confuses mei
guess i just dont understand??
I really hate to ask a lot of questions here but i have tried on
ubuntuforums.org and have not got any good answers.
Another thing is that i have the error code when i first boot about the
PCI...cannot allocate blah blah blah.is this part of the problem? im just
confused :)

I am really sorry for interrupting you guys with stupid questions but i
really want to get this fixed and if i can do anything to help please
let me know. if you dont want to answer my questions here please email
me [EMAIL PROTECTED]

also im in for 50 USD to the person who gets the fix :)

[Bug 148138] Re: High cpu usage on Xorg with gnome-terminal and transparency

2007-10-31 Thread naughtykid
I have something similiar, but I'm not sure it is the same or not.
Here's my case after upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy.

When I load netvibes in firefox and dragging the widget, it is showing
very high cpu-usage (nearly 100%). This phenomenon happened when I was
viewing large image using comix and dragging around. There's another
case, which is when I open the screensaver but I'm not sure whether this
is normal or not.

Was performed fine in Feisty too.

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2007-10-31 Thread Flarkit
I hope I'm not repeating previous comments, but I think this bug would
be best addressed if the distros were consolidated down to specific
Linux OS packages, such as Linux Enterprise, Linux Studio and Linux
Home/Office (or Linterprise, LinStudio and LinHoff).

I believe that whilst the community continues to splinter off like this,
the result will be slower progress. Fewer companies and individuals
really trust an OS which consists of dozens of competing factions, IMHO.

If all the incredible mental resources around the world (that are
currently almost competing on various distros), were to focus on such
specific platforms, would this not be sufficient to topple the behemoth?

Whilst competition may encourage new ideas, it hampers the overall
improvement. With visionary architects like Torvalds, Shuttleworth and
co. overseeing the direction of everyone's work, I believe Linux would
continue to evolve into the leading OS, whilst retaining the benefits of
OSS.

[Bug 54294] Re: Failed to allocate mem resource #6 ...

2007-10-31 Thread michael perigard
I'm receiving the message too, while booting the gutsy alternate install
cd, but from the kernel.org bugzilla for this bug:

So I would suggest we close this as apparently confused BIOS, but Linux
works. ... Greg, could you please consider removing that message, or
rephrasing it
in some manner so that it is less alarming? ... The message is now gone in
2.6.23. Closing this bug.

But I'm not sure how to update the status of this bug to reflect this.
It's marked as confirmed for two versions of the linux source, but
unless someone packports the change into a patch (?), then there wont be
a fix on any linux source version before 2.6.23. Maybe mark them as fix
released, and the fix is upgrade your kernel to 2.6.23 to remove the
message (when it becomes available) or ignore it as a warning...

[Bug 129146] Re: apport-gtk crashed with IOError in mark_report_seen()

2007-10-31 Thread Oumar Aziz OUATTARA
To summarize, this bug will happen every time :
An admin user that has the automatic apport-gtk bug reporting activated, as he
is logged, has an admin application crash. Apport will try reading the report
file , but this one is not readable by the user itself (but only by the root
and not even by the admin group) .

This can be understandable : as there is sometimes personal informations
in the bug report so the choice must be only to the owner to send or not
the bug report.

At the and the solution Alec proposed is the right one.

[Bug 158950] My site inaccessible on multiple computers

2007-10-31 Thread Dhonn Lushine
Public bug reported:

I've already had a run-around with GoDaddy and they think it's on my
end.

I've replaced my network gear, cable modem, router and switch, without
this problem being resolved.

I have no firewall on the server or on any client computers. The only
firewall is the default firewall provided by the router.

I am only having this problem with Linux and this problem doesn't happen
in XP ever!

Now here is my problem:

When I access my site http://www.osversion.com or the dedicated ip
address associated with it, I can only do it from one ubuntu computer at
a time! The other ubuntu computers on my network must wait it's turn.
From my tests it seems that there is some persistent connection problem.

Here is a test on a box that is going to start a connection with the
server. Take note of the time it takes. (Obviously we are not allowed
in, it's not the point)

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ time telnet osversion.com 3306
Trying 68.178.191.123...

serverConnection closed by foreign host.

real0m0.181s
user0m0.000s
sys 0m0.008s

At the same time on a second computer on my network, I am going to run the same
command about a second later.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ time telnet osversion.com 3306
Trying 68.178.191.123...
Connected to osversion.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
THost 'ipXX-X-XX-XX.sd.sd.cox.net' is not allowed to connect to this

real1m33.165s
user0m0.008s
sys 0m0.000s

It will connect but only after 1m33s. And this always happens in this
manner. It's always around 90 seconds! If I run that command 30
seconds after the other computer it will take 60 seconds, etc, etc..

I can repeat the same process over and over and over again, and it
simply never goes away.

This problem happens to any port, 22, 3306, 80, whatever, you can mix
and match these ports and the results are the same.

All trace route or ping activity goes through perfectly.

It is important to note that Windows XP does NOT have this problem. I
can connect to the osversion.com simultaneously on XP.

I found this bug when my girlfriend and I was checking out my new site. We
notice that it was not responding on the other computers and being really
flaky. We simply couldn't use the website at the same time!

Re: [Bug 144175] Re: tilda stays like a gray window

2007-10-31 Thread Mantas Zimnickas
I installed this .deb via gdebi. After first run I got this:

tilda: error while loading shared libraries: libconfuse.so.0: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

After installing libconfuse0:

sudo apt-get install libconfuse0

Tilda started to work and it seems, that Tilda doesn't crashes as before, but
still doesn't work. I see blinking cursor at the very top left corner of Tilda's
window, but I can't enter any thing. When I starting to type, cursor stops
blinking, but entered letters doesn't appears. So at this point Tilda is
unusable...

I fix that by setting „Run custom command instead of shell“ to my shell.

Also, „Always on Top“ doesn't work correctly too. Currently I use compiz, so it
is possible that „Always on Top“ problem is related to compiz. When I press a
key to show up Tilda window, it pulls down below currently active window, but if
I click on Tilda window with mouse, then it stays on top as needed...

Any way, at least Tilda started to work! :) Hope those bugs soon disappears too.

Someone will fix somewhere in the future.
The problem is here since months now and has not been fixed in Gutsy either.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'd focus resources in kernel issues like this one rather

[Bug 158952] Initial user account created on install of Gutsy server is not added to admin group

2007-10-31 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

After a fresh install of Gutsy server edition, the user account created
during the installation is not granted membership to the 'admin' group.

As such, the system is left without any administrator account after the

This is 100% reproducible. But it seems strange that something so
obvious would have gone through...

[Bug 132800] Re: Command line automatically included in bug report, violating user's privacy

I definitely agree .

quote
A proper fix for this should show a preview of all the debugging information
being submitted. The fix would allow the user to exclude any fields that can
violate her privacy before submitting her bug report via the net.
/quote

well, showing to an common end user, all debugging information can be really
scary. But we need to analyze and to distinguish type of informations that
could touch to the user privacy , then ALWAYS ask him if he wanted to modify
the informations (concealing them for instance) but he needs to be aware that
in some case the exact information is mandatory to investigate.
But we shouldn't allow complete removal of the information (just modification).

in some case , private informations are embedded in the stack Trace.
Those cases are really difficult to address.

NOTE [for QA] : this bug importance should be set to High or Serious as
privacy is a really important subject for Users

Re: [Bug 138793] Re: no warning about decoy conf files

2007-10-31 Thread Rick Graves
Martin,

Having just run this again, I can report that the conf
files are deposited in the data directory when you run
initdb.

Also, for the postgresql server to start, I must copy
server.crt, server.key and root.crt from
/var/lib/postgresql/8.1/main to the data directory,
and change the owner of those files to postgres.
Otherwise, no go.

   dpkg -l 'postgres*' | grep ^ii

I get postgresql-8.1, postgresql-client-8.1,
postgresql-common, and postgresql-client-common. The
first two are version 8.1.9-0ubuntu0.6.06.

   lsb_release -d

Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS

It does not happen on Ubuntu
 Feisty/Gutsy and Debian Etch/unstable.

For a database sever, I think most real database
administrators would choose a long term support
version over unstable!

when i shutdown my laptop it still have a PARK sound
after apply the fix it wont work . too

this is the fix i apply

Simply write a file at /etc/rc0.d/S00hdd-shutdown-workaround which
includes this two lines:

#!/bin/sh
echo 1 /sys/class/scsi_disk/0\:0\:0\:0/stop_on_shutdown

If you have more than one directory at /sys/class/scsi_disk/ try to
find out which of it is your internal harddisk (e.g. cat
/sys/class/scsi_disk/a:b:c:d/device/model) If you have more than one
harddisk add another line for each of them.

Then make it executable (chmod +x filename)

Any Idea this is killing me...

a display 1024X768 so the firefox viewport is smaller than to my laptop.

The problem appears only whe a try to view a specific area of the html
page.

I have created a tar file (LaRepubblica.itHomepage.tgz) from my cache to
reproduce the problem.
It isen't generate only with a save as but i had manualy modify the html
source file (for example
to use right css file)

The problem is caused from this html:

a
href=/news/ired/ultimora/2006/rep_nazionale_n_2647600.html?ref=hpsbdx4
strongMilano, 22:32/strong
#8212; BERLUSCONI: DOPO FOTO SU OGGI VERONICA E#039; RIMASTA,
AHIME#0...
/a

When i try to view this section of the web page (to the top right, column 24
ORE AGI ,
near BERLUSCONI: DOPO FOTO SU OGGI VERONICA E RIMASTA, AHIME) firefox freeze
(see screenshot.jpg)

[Bug 144077] Re: [gutsy] Regression - Desktop effects could not be enabled on ATI Mobility Radeon

2007-10-31 Thread getaceres
Well, if I use the ati driver then I cannot enable desktop effects. If
I use the radeon driver it activates the desktop effects (I can see
the shadow) but the screen hangs immediatly. Also, when the Live CD
tries to enable them, it hangs too but this time it leaves a black
screen and the cursor (which I can move but nothing more).

[Bug 158962] ATI X display : KDE screen 640x480 in top-left corner of a 1280x1024 screen

2007-10-31 Thread Alain EMPAIN
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

** Quite similar to :
** Bug #132323, first reported on 2007-08-13 by Ross Peoples
** [gusty] Applications open at the top left corner of the screen while using
Compiz Fusion

Background : HP Compaq DC5750
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS482 [Radeon Xpress
200]

Previous Kubuntu releases : perfect

Gutsy :
- detects my Radeon card and sets correctly a 1280x1024 display
- the main background image displays fine
- the KDM screen displays as a surimposed top-left 640x480 screen (its own
background image is scaled accordingly)
- the KDE screen follows the same scheme : using only the top-left part of the
whole display.

Remark :
- the mouse can be moved through all the 1280x1024 space
- some applications can be moved or expanded outside the KDE screen area (the
bottom is always forbidden)
- OpenOffice Impress going to fullscreen : uses the full display area, and
returns back to the KDE area when leaving fullscreen mode.

Tip : I switched to the VESA driver and now everything looks correct (but not
so nice).

So, nothing urgent for me but quite repulsive to newbees

Thanks, Alain

There seems to be a simple dependence of the effect upon the cause. The
more tabs I open the less stable Firefox becomes. The longer it runs
without restart the more often it crashes. It likes to crash especially

[Bug 158958] After upgrade to Firefox 2.0.0.8. Form TEXT Boxes crash/close (no errors)

2007-10-31 Thread LonelyDragon
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded from Firefox 2.0.0.6 (or 7 or something) to 0.8
Ever since, whenever I am in a text box (like this one) Firefox will crash /
close
unexpectedly. I noticed it first at t-mobile.com/messaging site... and notice
it
would happen when I pressed a space bar after typing a word... it would crap
out.
what is weird... if I start with a space as the beginning character, it would
be good
until I typed a letter or whatever. then a space, it would crashNO
error messages
at all... Occationally, doing a google search will do it too (or random
google results).
I think I am using Ubuntu Gutsy...

(I am a newbie, and usually click, ya. upgrade this or that, when the upgrade
wizzard says
something is there...)...

I did try to remove Firefox and even rebooted...
went back and re-installed it and it still freaking craps out on me...

assistance would greatly be appreciated...

I like Opera and all... but for linux. I got accustomed to Firefox
again...

[Bug 146763] Re: package grub 0.97-29ubuntu4 failed to install/upgrade:

2007-10-31 Thread Tormod Volden
There is no ends of errors in your term.log, it starts with volumeid
failing to install properly:

 Setting up volumeid (113-0ubuntu13) ...
 /var/lib/dpkg/info/volumeid.postinst: 56: Syntax error: ) unexpected
(expecting ;;)
 dpkg: error processing volumeid (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2

This probably created an avalanche of dependency problems. The volumeid
issue was fixed before the 7.10 release:

[Bug 158966] [Feisty]Openoffice writer freezes when opening a file

2007-10-31 Thread der_vegi
Public bug reported:

The following problem occured on a Feisty i386 machine with all updates
until Oct. 30th: When I tried to open an Openoffice Writer file from my
desktop clicking on it, OO opened it, but then froze: I still could see
the content of the file, but scrolling, clicking or performing any
action did not work. I only could minimize the window, if I closed it, I
had to Force Quit.

Running ooffice from the console 'ooffice file.odt', most files were opened and
I could use them. But still with some of them, writer froze. I could also open
most files by opening it from the file = open dialogue.
Running ooffice from the console freezing didn't give an error.

This started with an update maybe 2 months ago, uninstalling and
reinstalling openoffice did not solve the problem, it was present for
all users of this machine. But after deleting the .openoffice.org2
directory in the home directories the problem didn't occur any more.

I'm seeing a similar problem since the gutsy upgrade that would kind of support

I have not tried suspend yet but hibernate has been consistent. Appeared to
work shutting everything down then failed on resume with the regular hibernate
failed dialog box and network cards errors out with no such device

This is an old HP/Compac nx9000.
The only non-standard addition is ndiswrapper for a wireless card, which since

For example, en event scheduled for Oct. 30 at 18:00 in Google Calendar

development, I still need it to build examples from the internet etc.

[Bug 158968] can not compile kernel from sources - have an error

2007-10-31 Thread .Ru
Public bug reported:

First: it is VERY hard to recompile kernel in Ubuntu :( I can not find
proper information about this.

I done (i do not know why, but it is written in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelCustomBuild, so i do it):
cd /usr/src/
sudo apt-get install linux-kernel-devel fakeroot kernel-wedge kernel-package
sudo apt-get build-dep linux-source
apt-get source linux-source

then i receive linux-source-2.6.22.tar.bz2
i untar it (using mc) and go to linux-source-2.6.22.

i do make clean, then make menuconfig:

 make menuconfig

  HOSTCC scripts/basic/docproc

[Bug 48773] Re: Mouse doesn't get turned off on system shutdown

2007-10-31 Thread Federico Belvisi
I added linux-source-2.6.22 since this problem also affects Gutsy.

I tried the workaround Sebastian Kemper posted and it worked for me on a
nvidia nforce2 intel based motherboard. Can't this patch find its way
into ubuntu kernel? What are the problems other unaffected users can
have using this workaround?
