Re: [Bug 156628] Re: [gutsy] xdvi.bin symlink not installed

2007-11-13 Thread Jan-Åke Larsson
Norbert Preining wrote:
There is NO way to decide on sane/non-broken in every case. We can
ONLY care for dangling symlinks which WE have installed, not for
 anything else.

I know that. There was no dangling symlink. There was no symlink.
Period.

Dangling symlinks are not in question. To whoever brought this up: go
report another bug.

My system is a simple standalone laptop. As are the majority of
installs, I presume. I would expect the install scripts to be able to
 handle this situation.

It could be that the code already handles this, but the postinst script
was stopped prior to executing the update-alternatives code due to an
 error in fmtutil-sys.

Then that is reason for the symptoms I reported. Feel free to close the
bug whenever this is fixed.

[Bug 34043] Re: Nvidia binary driver requires Option NvAGP 1 for reliable suspend/resume.

2007-11-13 Thread Ketil Malde
I guess I was wrong - the POST_VIDEO etc fix didn't solve it after all.

I tried multiple suspend/resume cycles which did work, but later it didn't,
perhaps due
to a longer period in suspend? I'll try blacklisting the intel agp modules
next (just setting
NvAGP to 1 in the xorg.conf doesn't seem to have any effect).

[Bug 122549] Re: [gutsy] unredirect-fullscreen-windows option breaks gnome-screensaver locking behavior

2007-11-13 Thread Roman Yepishev
With compositing enabled in xfce, gnome-screensaver fails to keep the screen
black.
The result then looks like
http://rtg.optirom.info/photos/gnome-screensaver-disclosure.jpg (actual photo
of the screen, sorry for the quality).
The screen becomes black at first and then the password input prompt is then
displayed along with all the screen. The image is still but the update can be
easily update by leaving a message.

[Bug 156289] Re: system freeze on gutsy with compiz-fusion

2007-11-13 Thread ArShAm
Ok
I had 3 freeze in a row for less than 10 mins
In the first one , every programs I had to run were open (amarok , gaim , skype
, firefox , wingide , zend studio , acrobat reader )
The second and 3rd , only the gaim with compiz

I observed in some incoming messages from gaim , I have the freeze
Maybe some plugins in gaim needs to do something that causes the crash

In the other situations that I had 24 hours stable , I had gaim with no
incoming messages , but lots of java/python/native programs running

System specs:
Centrino 1.6
1GB RAM
External USB HDD attached
GC : intel 915GM

Kernel : 2.6.22-14-386

I have gutsy , but manually installed these packages from feisty repos :
x11-common 1:7.2-0ubuntu11
xserver-xorg-input-all 1:7.2-0ubuntu11
xorg 1:7.2-0ubuntu11
xserver-xorg 1:7.2-0ubuntu11
xserver-xorg-video-all 1:7.2-0ubuntu11

I hope these informations help

echo ${FOO:-10} results in 10, if $FOO is not set, if you want to get
-10 as default, you would actually have to use ${FOO:--10}. The :-

So, this seems to be fine - except for the typo.. ;)

[Bug 162371] openoffice opening files over network

2007-11-13 Thread Divan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

When opening a file with konqueror or nautilus I think, you can not open
up office documents over the network.

A simple fix is to do the following:
Look at your MIME settings in konqueror. There you will find that openoffice
documents are set like:

 ooffice -writer %U

 if you change that to

 ooffice -writer %f

the file will be copied to a temp directory before its opened. If it changes,
konqueror is smart enough to ask if it should upload the new version.

Why is this not the default? A bug has been reporting ages ago and yet
this is still the case?

Isn't this a one minute bug fix? Can it be done please? :)

Thanks

[Bug 144631] Re: xen guest hangs after mounting filesystem

2007-11-13 Thread nettraptor
Same problems here with ubuntu gutsy, adding a new line to the DomU
configuration file:
extra='xencons=tty'

This does make the VMs Virtually work but now they hung in the state of
setting the system clock.. forever!

In other words, this must be a complicated problem an yes it might be
the case that we have a problem there as well.

I have seen many problems with gutsy and Xen 3.1. I simply and strongly
believe that it is not a prod setup by any means.

First I got the /lib/tls problem, then the extra='xencons=tty', now the
hwclock and in the past loads of problems with the cupsys
incompatibilities in the Host (don't ask why i wanted cupsys.

The case we are facing now is the worst. Guest domains will simply not
boot properly without great intervention. Furthermore the minute you
solve one problem another one shows up

[Bug 162379] Screen is not updated anymore

2007-11-13 Thread Paul Dufresne
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

In Gutsy, things were working (well, honestly, did test about 5 mins).
Then upgraded to Hardy (manually replaced 'gutsy' by 'hardy' in
/etc/sources.list, then sudo apt-get dist-upgrade).

Now, windows open, but whatever I do, nothing change on the screen.
Suppose I open Applications/Accessoires/Editeur de texte, then type a line in
the editor, nothing would appears.
But then, if I Ctrl-Alt-F3, then Alt-F7, my line of text is there. Scroll bars
do nothing either, except if I go to a console, then return with Alt-F7.
Buttons don't really appears. Really, nothing update inside windows. Even when
going to a console with Ctrl-Alt-F3, screen was remaining black.

I had first tried to install Gutsy xserver-xorg-video-intel .deb binary
package, ignoring conflicts, but that was a bad idea, xorg not able to
start, switch the Failsafe mode. Things were updating fine in VESA, but
resolution was limited to 800x600. I then reinstalled old
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.1 on /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then replaced 'intel' by
'i810' as driver, then tried to Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. But Ctrl-Alt-
Backspace did not seemed to really take my changes into account. So I
rebooted and it was fine (high resolution again). And screen update
normally.

Summary: using i810 is a workaround for screen not updating anymore

I have a i945GZ chipset.
Was having current version: 2:2.1.1-4ubuntu2 of xserver-xorg-video-intel.

I may try to get source, try to learn how to build it, and try to find which
version exactly cause problems.
But it may take me some days.

[Bug 146399] Re: gnome-terminal crashed with signal 7

2007-11-13 Thread Alberto Scotti
Peter,
I had this problem too since last update.
If you need a terminal you could also install konsole (the kde console tool):
it works for me (yet you have to install kde deps packages which may not be a
viable option for you, if the machine you're using is a server and/or you want
to keep it clean)

[Bug 162381] azureus crashed when I try to start it (Ubuntu/7.10 (gutsy))

2007-11-13 Thread nick
Public bug reported:

When I run azureus from applications menu, it crashes without any error report.
I have removed the azureus package and all packages that depends on it with

This must result in resetting configuration of azureus packages, but when I

[Bug 26338] Re: Changing users randomly affects other users and group memberships

2007-11-13 Thread Martin Pitt
** Summary changed:

- Adding a user to a group modifies other users' groups and passwords
+ Changing users randomly affects other users and group memberships

** Description changed:

- Nothing to do with 3270 but couldnt post with real problem package which is
- pmount..?
+ Impact:
+ gnome-system-tools does not keep its internal model of users and groups
consistent with the real world in /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, and /etc/group.
This leads to errors like deleting a different user than the one you chose in
the UI, dropping unrelated users from groups like admin (thus making the system
inaccessible for administration), and similar effects.

- Overall description: My TAT CODISK 2.0 and MP3 player SigmaTel MSCN Music
Player
- and and CDs I put in my cd drive will not automount. This problem is
repeatable
- and mostly consistant. Having searced forums and this site it is similar to
bug
- #23770. This problem emerged after adding a new desktop user to the system and
- changing the primary user password and has only occured on one of the two
Ubuntu
- systems I have.
- Having worked through bug #23770 I have tried all the suggestions and am able
to
- mount USB drives with the command pmount -d /dev/sda1.
- Attached is the terminal output from this command and from the id command.
+ Fix:
+ Update the internal world model with each operation, done in
http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-system-tools?view=revisionrevision=4017.
This needs some serious backporting for Feisty and earlier, I suppose; it
should apply well to Gutsy.

- Steps to reproduce: This problem is reproducable with both kernel versions I
- run: 2.6.12-9-686 and my main kerenel 2.6.12-10-686
+ Regression potential: The bug could not be fixed fully, there might be
+ more places which need update calls. Potentially the patch could mess up
+ the pam db even more.

- Actual results: Drives will not auto mount and appear on the desktop. Connot
be
- opened via computer menu, delivering error message:
+ TEST CASE:
+ 1. launch users-admin
+ 2. create a test1 user
+ 3. create a test2 user (with admin rights)
+ 4. create a test3 user
+ 5. delete the test1 user
+ 6. delete the test3 user

[Bug 121833] Re: LCD backlight turns off when between discrete levels, both from hotkeys and from dim-on-idle.

2007-11-13 Thread MRDutton
Here is a really ugly hack that lets HAL/G-P-M work with the odd
brightness levels mentioned. There is a README inside the tarball. You
have to hard code the legal brightness levels in an FDI file and add
some sh script to some HAL scripts. It only works for devices that use
the sysfs interface to set brightness but could easily be adapted.

The tarball is named with Gateway, etc but can work with any computer
with this issue.

[Bug 79592] Re: IBM OpenPower system refuses to boot Edgy Install CD

2007-11-13 Thread James Troup
We only have one machine of this type and it's in use right now, so
reinstalling it with gutsy isn't really an option I'm afraid. (If no
one else has hardware to test this on and can confirm it's still broken,
feel free to close it for now)

[Bug 138349] Re: python-elementtree pack/usr/share/python-support/python-elementtree/elementtree/age has wrong directory structure

2007-11-13 Thread dirken
The problem is that all files in directory /var/lib/python-support/python2.5/
should be changed, the imports used in those files (such as gdata.py and
atom.py) are:
from elementtree import ElementTree

and this should be changed in every file to:
try:
from xml.etree import cElementTree # for Python 2.5 users
except ImportError:
  from elementtree import cElementTree

As long as this isn't updated elementree won't work with python 2.5
The patching solution seems to complicated to me so isn't there any other
solution?
Or maybe anyone who wants to change all the files? :p

[Bug 162379] Re: Screen is not updated anymore (Hardy, i945GZ)

2007-11-13 Thread Paul Dufresne
Well, actually not ALL is working.
When I go to text mode with Ctrl-Alt-F3, I get a blank screen, and after about
7 seconds, monitor goes to economy mode (yellow light rather than green light).
No text at all. I was expecting this to be a different matter.

Ctrl-Alt-F3 works fine under i810 driver.

But I guess this is an other bug.
