[Bug 178558] Re: Firefox 3.0 makes everything annoyingly huge

Ok, I've been debugging this with Alexander's help on IRC, and I've tracked it

[Bug 16345] Re: hwclock -r fails on Dell Precision 670 due to rtc driver, use genrtc instead?

2008-04-02 Thread Stuart Rossiter
I still have this problem on a Dell Optiplex 745 with the latest kernel
(2.6.22):

uname -r
2.6.22-14-386

sudo hwclock -r
select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out

Works with --directisa option as mentioned elsewhere:

sudo hwclock -r --directisa --utc
Wed 02 Apr 2008 11:21:40 BST -0.855465 seconds

So should this bug be re-opened??

P.S. I've seen elsewhere about adding the directisa option to
HWCLOCKPARS in /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh (and I guess hwclockfirst.sh as
well). Is this a sensible workaround to do? When are these run (every
boot or e.g. only when using NTP?)? I don't seem to have any issues with
my time being wrong as is.

There are so many bug reports about bcm43xx that I get the impression
... we don't know in where to post. At least for the bcm4318 I can
verify that it works using the refered skript. If more users can verify
that ..we could distinguish this problem from other bugs.

[Bug 210748] [NEW] hal can't upgrade in chroot: polkit-auth call in postinst fails

[Bug 108527] Re: X freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI X300

2008-04-02 Thread Giuseppe Pantanetti
I'm sorry, I agree with Emmanuel: I can't understand the closing of this
bug.

Is this bug resolved? If so, why opening the new #195051 bug? Beside
that, what about applying the patch for Gutsy too (maybe would be useful
to anyone who can't swith to the Hardy beta or try Hardy as soon as it's
released)?

If this bug isn't resolved, why closing? Where can we follow the resolution of
the problem?
If there's a more specific bug, why not marking this as a duplicate?
The bug is related to ATI open source driver? Let's open a new one with X
freezes when compiz is enabled on ATI open source driver and mark all related
bugs as duplicates! The #195051 is X freezes in drmCommandWrite() when Compiz
is enabled on ATI Radeon Mobility 9600, I say: it should be marked as a
duplicate.

@Bryce, You said you were sort of able to reproduce a lockup on an ATI
R350 9800 using firefox 3, without Compiz enabled..., you kill firefox3
by switching to a vt and everything comes back... I think this is not a
reproduction of this bug: the system freezes with a clean install of
Gutsy (and Feisty with compiz) - all of them without Firefox 3 - and
it's impossible to switch to a vt... Besides that, I don't think it's a
client application related bug: I tried to send a SIGKILL to all my
processes (using Alt-SysRq-i) and X remained freezed.

Re: [Bug 145887] Re: Gutsy Beta: Tablet Notebook's Stylus Not Working

2008-04-02 Thread Square Bottle
Why is that overkill? The best solution would be to do it automatically, so
until that's possible, then that means not having it be automatic if you
want it to work. Surely a one-time prompt that makes things work is
preferable to never asking and not working. It's fine if you want to reject
a proposed solution, but instead of aborting all further efforts, why not
brainstorm a little to help come up with a solution to implement at least
until having it be automatic is possible?

Re: [Bug 195782] Re: Users not automatically added to scanner group: No scanning functions of HP multi-function in Hardy

2008-04-02 Thread Martin Pitt
Hi Johannes,

Johannes Meixner [2008-04-02 9:47 -]:
 regarding int_outof, see my comment
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hplip/+bug/195782/comments/39
In particular test int_outof with more than one HP all-in-one device.
Perhaps it works for your HAL version?

IIRC the syntax already existed in 0.5.10, but didn't work. It was
finally fixed in [1] last November. We use hal 0.5.11RC2 now, where it
works properly. Since current hal-info also uses int_outof
extensively, it's quite important to have that working.

If you need to use 0.5.10 in the current openSuSE, then maybe you
should apply above upstream patch?

Martin

[Bug 205114] Re: B43 driver - severely reduced range

2008-04-02 Thread wolfchri
Same here on a HP NX6325 notebook with BCM4310 WLAN device.

De facto not working, even if I increase antenna power of my hot spot to
insane levels (WRT 54GL router with DD-WRT).

If this can not be fixed, pls replace it with the old, proprietary
firmware until this issue gets fixed as many many notebooks come with a
BCM 43xx device and such issues really delay fixing bug #1

[Bug 197673] Re: gnome-display-properties should revert change automatically if not acknowledged

2008-04-02 Thread Miguel Martinez
Heh, I should have read this bug before spamming the ubuntu-x mailing
list.

Long story short: as acknowledged here, I managed to screw my only
monitor (my laptop screen) via gnome-display-properties. It was even
more serious, since I've just discovered that the offending file is
.gnome2/montiors.xml (I somehow expected this to be in .gconf/)

By the way, a reinstall might *not* solve the problem. If you have a
separate /home partition, and the user you create during the install is
the same (same name, uid and gid) you had before (very likely in a home
computer), you will still have the borked monitors.xml when you boot
after install.

[Bug 210749] [NEW] Openoffice spreadsheet crashes x

2008-04-02 Thread JeffV
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-common

I upgraded to the latest Hardy Heron repository this morning, and when
starting OpenOffice Calc, clicking on File or File, Open now crashes my
X server comprehensively. I get a black screen of death and no keyboard
input. All was fine before the latest update.

I made one change last night, which could have contributed: I edited the
xorg.conf to tell X that I'm using a Microsoft Natural Elite keyboard
and not a generic PC105 keyboard. I don't think it's this that's caused
the problem: everything else has been working without a problem today,
and I'm fairly certain (95%) that I used Openoffice last night after the
keyboard change.

[Bug 141298] Re: Intel video card 8086:2a02 blacklisted, can't run compiz

2008-04-02 Thread DanielBachran
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 140833 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/140833

I can reproduce this bug on my Dell XMS M1330 which came w/ Gutsy pre-
installed.

$ lspci -v -d 8086:2a02
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: Dell Unknown device 0209
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at fea0 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=1M]
Memory at e000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
I/O ports at eff8 [size=8]
Capabilities: access denied

After enabling Compiz by adding SKIP_CHECKS=yes to /etc/xdg/compiz
/compiz-manager (as described here:
http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10/Issues/Compiz_Fusion_965GM_Incompatibility),
Compiz runs just fine.

Video playback did not work initially. But after applying the workaround
described above I get both Compiz and video:
- Run gstreamer-properties
- On the Video tab, change Default Output to Plugin: X Window System (no
Xv)

Where there's no clear ordering between two potential inhabitants of a

fine, since they do wipe the device first)

[Bug 66085] Re: DVD crashes Kaffeine without libdvdcss

2008-04-02 Thread Kevin C
Kaffeine 0.8.6 in Hardy Beta with updates from April 2008 still crashes
with the dvdcss codecs installed. Is there something else that I need
to install to play DVD's? Vlc plays the same DVD without crashing and
the Hardy release notes point out that Kaffeine now should work.

[Bug 199887] Re: Bandrich C100 HSPDA modem failure due to udev or hald actions

2008-04-02 Thread Scott James Remnant
Added kernel and hal tasks to investigate the right way to solve this.

Here's a paste of relevant bits of the upstream discussion (for a
different device, mentally substitute numbers ;p)

Start it off with a Novatel modem that must be ejected to work properly
Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman [EMAIL PROTECTED]
+# Novatel USB devices need to be ejected so as to work properly as a modem
+SYSFS{idProduct}==5010, SYSFS{idVendor}==1410, RUN+=/usr/bin/eject %k

*ejected*? Do I even want to know why?
Smart devices which may appear either as a mass storage device which
contains windows drivers or as the device itself.

I guess we should just eject the block device that comes from this
device, when it shows up, instead of relying on magic of the eject
 program to find it.
I'm noticing, however, we already have code in unusual_devs.h to handle
this situation - why are we adding yet another solution?

 2) Devices which have a fake CD-ROM that we don't care about, and are
trying to hide from the user.
We already handle this in the desktop just fine [1]. And I think that's
the way forward for this; causal mom+pop users won't see any cdrom icons
anywhere in the UI when using a Sandisk U3 Cruzer (or whatever) but you
can still access and mount /dev/sr1 from the command line if you're into
that kind of kinky stuff. Who knows, maybe Wine is into that kind of
stuff.

[1] : right now via hal via fdi files but in a shiny future it will just
be yet another udev rule that merges a property DEVICE_SHOULD_BE_IGNORED
that the deskops will use to ignore the device.

[Bug 199887] Re: Bandrich C100 HSPDA modem failure due to udev or hald actions

2008-04-02 Thread Scott James Remnant
There's a couple of these modems now, the upstream mailing list
discussed another case recently.

The proposal was to eject the storage device, so that it could be
mounted if somebody really wanted it, rather than ignoring it -- but
then the thread started to point out that other cases of this are
already handled in the kernel with the UNUSUAL_DEV macro.

Please wait for the ubuntu-modules and restricted-modules to become
available for your kernel since there is a high probability of chances
that your sound card drivers are in these packages. Alsa is installed
but won't magically make your sound card work without drivers, which are
sometime in the ubuntu-modules and restricted-modules. If it still does
not work once the packages become available, please open another bug

AFAIK we do not hardcode any paths in Mayavi2. We heavily really on

Would simply syncing the debian package be an option? The upstream code

Thanks for keeping me posted, this issue is very important for me,

[Bug 210758] [NEW] Acroread duplex printing doesn't work

2008-04-02 Thread tmp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acroread

I use kubuntu/gutsy.

When printing two copies of an odd paged document in duplex the output should
be as follows (assume there are three pages in the document):
  Sheet 1: Page 1+2
  Sheet 2: Page 3
  Sheet 3: Page 1+2
  Sheet 4: Page 3

However, when printing duplex in acroread the last and first page are merged to
the same sheet!
  Sheet 1: Page 1+2
  Sheet 2: Page 3+1
  Sheet 3: Page 2+3

A quite silly bug, IMHO.

2008-04-02 Thread Nick Bauermeister
I agree marking this as Fix Released is confusing, it should be marked as

See comments #143 (Bryce's) and #162 (mine) why.

There should also be a clarification in the original report why this has been
closed and that the issue is not fixed.
Additionally it should state clearly what Bryce said in comment #143.
The more input the devs get the better, so everyone please do what Bryce told
you there.

I'm reluctant to edit other people's reports myself, though – am I
allowed to do that?

[Bug 129910] Re: Blank ttys when using vesafb (vga=xxx)

2008-04-02 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Taupter : restricted modules and ubuntu modules are two packages which
add drivers and modules to ubuntu. Most of laptops won't have sound
working without these packages for your kernel, opening a new bug report
for this is really not appropriate because you don't have necessary
packages installed, this is not a bug. Alsa is the linux sound system,
but this system won't use your sound card if the linux kernel does not
have any drivers (modules) for it. Also, problem with sound cards is not
a part of this bug which is about blank tty, this bug is closed. It
would make more sense that you wait for the ubuntu-modules and
restricted-modules to come for your kernel before opening a bug for this
if the problem really persist.

[Bug 198757] Re: ftdi_sio device does not work correctly as a normal user

2008-04-02 Thread Scott James Remnant
Serial ports, even converted ones, should probably be in the dialout
group (just like ttyS*). In theory, this should work already -- your
device should have a ttyUSB0 device set up from the tty subsystem, and
you should be able to access this.

It looks to me like your program might be trying to communicate with the
converter directly (rather than to the converter's serial port?) The
rule you tried would only affect the /dev/bus/usb device, which is not
normally used for serial communication.

What does the program do? Is it some kind of firmware uploader or
settings changing program?

Could you do the following for me:
 1) unplug the device and wait a few seconds
 2) run from a terminal: sudo udevmonitor -e /tmp/udev.log
 3) plug the device in, and wait a few seconds
 4) stop the command
 5) attach the resulting /tmp/udev.log file to this bug report

Thanks

[Bug 200589] Re: fwlanusb crashes the system

2008-04-02 Thread Nils Kassube
Comparing the sources of the fwlanusb and ipw2200 drivers I found a
workaround for the bug - see the attached patch. However I don't
understand why this works. For me there should not be a difference.

that correct?

[Bug 210699] Re: gutsy-hardy upgrade error

Maybe this is a corner case, the gutsy upgrade image has
/etc/cron.daily/find and the diversion from slocate both inside. That
seems to trigger the bug.

[Bug 194552] Re: [Hardy] GDM starts with wrong display resolution

2008-04-02 Thread Johannes Langlotz
Both started with the wrong resolution. I changed the resolution with
gnome-display-properties. The GNOME resolution is correct now. But like
you said GDM still starts still with wrong detected resolution.

It is a DELL 2007wfp display and I don't know why xrandr does not use
the display's native resolution.
