There is a madwifi DKMS package there that is based on the madwifi-hal-2008-08-15 branch from madwifi.org. I have now upgraded this PC to Hardy 8.4.1. Unfortunately the nvidia driver will not even load in Hardy. This is the same bug I have on my home PC when I upgraded that to Hardy. IE when you click to install the proprietary nvidia driver, it installs the packages and aks to reboot. After reboot I arrive at the console end then the low resolution mode dialog pops up. The Monitor is correctly detected. Clicking on the graphic card selection, it has correctly detected my card, but selected the default VESA driver. I manually select Geforce7 series, but I am not allowed to select an nvidia driver, the open source one is selected and greyed out. I select OK and reboot. Now I get massive and blurred VGA login. I then go to System Setting..Monitor and display and find the monitor is now undetected! So I manually select 1680 x 1050 for my LCD monitor. Logoff, restart X, and this is fixed. But the login resolution is still VGA. I sorted this by hacking the xorg.conf to remove any resolution but 1680 x 1050. See bug 232012. Will this stuff ever be fixed! Note: booting into 2.6.24-21 (and other earlier kernels) works absolutely fine, so that's what I'm running at the moment. Booting into 2.6.27-3 recovery mode gives more details on the console. Then following a reboot after some updates yesterday (11th Sept) gnome no longer fully loads. I get the ubuntu splash no problems, then the 'wait' cursor, then a mouse pointer and the creamy background are displayed. The mouse cursor is responsive, but nothing further happens, despite leaving it for 10mins. I have tried the last successful boot, but the same thing happens, as I assume it thinks that it booted successfully. I have tried the repair options in the 'safe' boot. Also tried apt-get update/upgrade/dist- upgrade to no avail. With most recent updates, 3D acceleration once more blown away for nvidia-glx-177, (which no longer shows up as a Restricted Driver). Once gdm attempts to start, I again get a pop-up telling me that there was a problem with my video settings and that my computer is in low-resolution graphics mode. Only way out is to accept default configuration, which gets me 1280x800 correctly, but no 3D accel. Luckily, now there's a prompt for Troubleshooting, Startup Xorg logs attached below. [Bug 269418] [NEW] 8.10 installer fails to mount cdrom
Public bug reported: Using Ubuntu 8.10 alpha5 64 bit. When attempting to install from alternate CD, the installer fails to mount the cdrom. A dialog allows manually choosing a driver, but the only option is 'cdrom'. Running 'check cd media' results in the same thing. Using the desktop installer, it locks up badly, killing the display and requiring rebooting the computer from the reset switch. I have re-burned the install ISO using two different brands of media. Ubuntu 8.04 mounts the cdrom without any issues.
