[Bug 292788] Re: [i855] False Monitor Detection

2009-01-27 Thread Herr Irrtum
Did some researching and got some news:

I installed the Intel 2.5.1. driver from the ppa.launchpad.net Intel repository
- it is not the newest one (as stated in my comment above) but...
The sudden disconnects from X.org are still there. So there is still a chance
that version 2.6.0. of the Intel driver may solve the problem. I personally
will wait until it appears inside the mentioned repository.

But better news: In this thread:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/292761/comments/22

Cosmin Roman described a workaround: He disabled any other video output
which xrandr is able to detect beside the LVDS (the built in Laptop
screen) and this way he got (also) rid of the X crashing (so he stated
this in his next comment).

Sounds logical to me - but as I sometimes need different outputs it's
not a premium solution, you know :)

Greets,
Herr Irrtum

[Bug 288948] Re: upload extremely slow with iwl3945 (regression intrepid)

2009-01-27 Thread William
I cannot get the compat-wireless to work.
It keeps failing at the WEP passphrase. (I cannot test without a key on my
config so I do not know what would happen in open mode).
The dialog box ask for the passphrase and then tries to connect but fails and
reopen to ask the passphrase again.
I had put the latest firmware from linuxwireless.

I then sudo make uninstall to revert to at least a working connection.

Also am now running with the linux-backports-modules-intrepid modules
added but it seems this has absolutely no effect. I am back with almost
no upload speed. (Only testing source I know is the
www.testdevelocidad.es website)

Also I do not understand how I coul try the solution outlined by Daniel
T Chen. If it is a patch to the kernel module, I would need more hints
to be able to try that.

Thanks for your help.

[Bug 287031] Re: 2.6.27-7-generic not detecting 4GB RAM

2009-01-27 Thread vcherkassky
Yeah, the problem is BIOS. I realized that after my auto RAM check saw only
2800 (thought that one Memory module is burned, but no: inserting 1Gb instead
of it causes the same effect).
The problem is i can't now properly update my BIOS because latest version is
EXE for WinXP/Wista wanting to check battery state before doing something,
therefore not working under WinPE. I'l try not the latest one, but newer than
my current (under DOS), maybe something will change. I really don't want to
install this peace of s...oftware :) (win) on my notebook.

I think we can now close this bug.

[Bug 321833] [NEW] Intrepid: qtparted crashes when trying to create an NTFS partition

2009-01-27 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qtparted

Trying to NTFS partition an external USB 2.0 Freecom HDD with the
qtparted v0.4.5-cvs that ships with Ubuntu 8.10 64-Bit, qtparted crashed
with this not very informative error message:

Error: Dateisystem wurde nicht sauber ausgehangen (unmounted)! Sie sollten
e2fsck ausführen. Änderungen an einem unsauberen Dateisystem führen zu weiteren
nicht behebbaren Fehlern.
Segmentation fault

Note that gparted and kvpm too have issues NTFS formatting HDDs
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gparted/+bug/193398,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kvpm/+bug/321829), so
currently there is not a single GUI tool out in Ubuntu which would
enable one to NTFS format HDDs, which makes work in a professional
environment where NTFS is the standard file system and ext2/ext3 cannot
be read impossible (at least for me - maybe real nerds know some
workaround).

And, please, don't tell me that FAT32 is a way out (file size
restrictions!).

[Bug 321834] [NEW] digikam 0.10.0 does not start

2009-01-27 Thread tbd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: digikam

Hi,

I have a AMD64 machine with Ubuntu installed on it, with packages from
jaunty and hardy together. I've been trying to use the new digikam
0.10.0 version several times (I know it's a beta version, either), but
although it seems that it appears new packages of this same version,
after installed and when trying to run digikam it always gives me this
error:

$ digikam
digikam: symbol lookup error: digikam: undefined symbol:

Do you know what could it be due to?

Thanks a lot in advance, and greetings.

[Bug 321839] [NEW] Intrepid: No GUI for ntfsfix and start of ntfsfix not being offered when unclean unmount error message comes

2009-01-27 Thread oss_test_launchpad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ntfsprogs

This is a common problem for the average user: You do not unmount a HDD
cleanly from a Windows machine (because Windows has no problem with this
HDD when you connect it to the Windows system the next time). You
connect it to an Ubuntu machine. And Ubuntu tells you it refuses to
mount this HDD because it has not been unmounted cleanly before. In case
you do not have a Windows machine nearby to mount and cleanly unmount
the HDD again, you have to fight with cryptic terminal commands to get
the HDD going.

ntfsfix offers a simpler command to solve this problem than the solution
offered by Ubuntu's error message (to work with the letter you have to
know Ubuntu drive name syntax). Unfortunately it has no GUI. Even more
unfortunately, Ubuntu does not offer to one-click solve this problem
using ntfsfix.

If there was a one-click solution the use of NTFS drives would be less a
horror for Ubuntu users. Are there any legal issues which would forbid
to implement this feature? Seems that with ntfsfix the basic engine for
this already there.

This relates to Ubuntu 8.10 64-Bit and probably all prior Ubuntu
versions.

[Bug 315782] Re: Change of capitalization in filenames on FAT32

2009-01-27 Thread Nicklas W Bjurman
I posed a question where to begin digging on the Linux kernel mailing
list, the filesystem maintainer, OGAWA Hirofumi replied as below:

This is known issue for case-insensitive fs. (BTW, CI is case-
insensitive).

To allow rename(filename, FILENAME), we have to fix two issues. One
is vfs_rename(), it doesn't call -rename handler if inodes was same.

Another one is fs handlers, it has to handle dentry-d_name change while
someone is using it, and/or it has to care about dentry alias. Because,
the inode of both of names is same, and dentry should/may be same.

BTW, those is kernel side issues. There is some userland issues too
(e.g. IIRC, mv command check stat-st_ino before call rename(2)).

I also believe
http://lxr.linux.no/linux+v2.6.28.2/fs/fat/namei_vfat.c#L53 is a key
element to this bug.

[Bug 302935] Re: foomatic-rip fails

2009-01-27 Thread Till Kamppeter
This means that an updated PPD generated by Foomatic 4.0 fixes the
problem.

David Lang, did you activate the -proposed repository? What is the
output of

foomatic-rip --version

The newest foomatic-rip (4.0 final) has also a bug fix concerning a
segmentation fault. So it is possible that the segmentation fault
observed by the original poster can have disappeared.

So please test either with Jaunty or after following the instructions to
update from -proposed in bug 299918, using the old PPD file (Mitchell,
test with the HL-5140-debug queue). Do

cupsctl LogLevel=debug
cancel -a

Then print a job and wait until it comes out or turns to stopped
state. If the result is not satisfying, do

sudo cp /var/log/cups/error_log ~
sudo chmod 777 ~/error_log

and attach the error_log file from your home directory to this bug
report. Do not compress the file.

[Bug 283316] Re: CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject

2009-01-27 Thread Martin Pitt
This bug has a lot of subscribers, and it is fixed for most of them. So
let's not spam all those with the remaining corner cases.

If you still experience it, please open a new one, subscribe pitti to
it, and do the following things:

 * Open a terminal and run sudo udevadm monitor --udev 21 | tee
/tmp/udev.log. Then reproduce the problem by inserting/ejecting CDs.
Attach /tmp/udev.log to that new bug afterwards.

 * Do sudo /etc/init.d/hal stop and check whether you still can
reproduce the problem. Do sudo /etc/init.d/hal start to bring system
into normal state again after the test.

[Bug 320874] Re: [asus] /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness has it backwards

2009-01-27 Thread Khashayar Naderehvandi
Andy, the new kernel does not work for me. New behavior:

+ /sys/devices/virtual/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness seems to work
accurately.
+ xbacklight -set works accurately
- xbacklight does not read backlight values properly (it always returns
0.0)
- Fn-brightness buttons don't work as they should: Pressing brightness down,
brightness goes all the way to 0 and the osd. Brightness up, changes brightness
level to 1. That's it, 0 and 1 for down and up.
- gnome-power-manager brightness applet do not work properly

Back when I filed the upstream bug report, the patch in
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12235 solved the issue for
me. When my report was marked a duplicate, I was pointed to the patch
here: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12249#c34, but haven't
had time to try it. However, that patch is not the one you used for the
new kernel: http://people.ubuntu.com/~apw/lp320874-jaunty/0001-ACPI-
video-Fix-reversed-brightness-behavior-on-Thi.patch. So I'm a bit
confused which patch actually is supposed to fix this issue :-/

[Bug 321848] [NEW] libvte9-udeb depends on libncurses5

2009-01-27 Thread Colin Watson
Public bug reported:

In the most recent version in jaunty, libvte9-udeb depends on
libncurses5, due to being linked against libtermcap. This is a
disallowed dependency and causes debian-installer to fail to build.

It looks like vte 0.19.4 requires some work in order to be able to build
without ncurses for the udeb, although not a prohibitive amount.

[Bug 321727] Re: Incorrect automake, aclocal path variables in autoreconf script

2009-01-27 Thread Scott James Remnant
Something is broken on your system.

The /etc/alternatives directory is not expected to be in the $PATH,
update-alternatives takes care of symlinking in /usr/bin.

Try sudo update-alternatives --all

[Bug 321658] Re: setting permissions by group does not work

2009-01-27 Thread Scott James Remnant
Please run udevadm test on the /sys path of the device.

It's probable that a later rule is overriding the group, try changing
GROUP= to GROUP:=

You should replace SYSFS{...} with ATTR{...}

And you should remove ACTION==add
