[Bug 344299] [NEW] Kubuntu with composting effects often errs.

2009-03-17 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Working in Kubuntu 9.04a6 with ATI graphics (01:00.0 VGA compatible controller:
ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility X1400) and the stock open source driver,
every two or three hours I start getting windows errors. I will have an hour or
two of perfect usage, then with no obvious trigger (often I am no even touching
the keyboard or mouse) there symptoms will start occurring (not all at once):
1) Clock and other widgets will disappear from panel, one by one
2) Taskbar items will be blank, with no titles
3) The Kmenu will be transparent
4) Graphics disappearing from desktop widgets and menus

[Bug 341367] Re: Update to 3.2

2009-03-17 Thread Yannick Defais
BTW, the changelog for 3.2.0:

* What's changed ?
==

Compared to previous unstable version (3.1.2):
- Better NAT support in case of Cone NAT
- Uniformise detection of libnotify; fix compilation with mingw
- Fix URL completion combobox shows identical completions
- Fix Assistant loosing values when going backward
- Fix GmConf settings when compiled with another package name
- Fix unregistration of accounts
- Fix build with --enable-kde
- Fix OS X build
- Fixed possible crash when retrieving presence information
- New translations: crh, or
- Updated translations: as, bg, bn_IN, da, de, el, eu, gl, gu, hi, hu,
ja, kn, ko, ku, lt, ml, mr, or, pt, ro, ru, ta, te, tr
- New help translation: en_GB
- Updated help translation: fr

Compared to previous stable version (3.0.0), major features:
- Better NAT support in case of Cone NAT
- There is now only one H.263 plugin implementing both H.263 and H.263+
- Allow several ALSA devices to have the same name
- Added support for the G.722 audio codec: G.722 is a 16 kHz wideband
audio codec advertised as HD Voice by the famous Polycom. It is a
great boost in quality and interoperability
- Added support for the CELT ultral-low delay audio codec: CELT delivers
high quality audio at 32 kHz or 48 kHz, allowing to transmit music in
high quality, with low delay and low bitrate
- Added support for SIP dialog-info notifications: they allow displaying
notifications of incoming calls in the roster. With software like
kamailio or Asterisk, it allows being informed of incoming calls
  reaching your colleagues
- Largely improved LDAP support: the OpenLDAP guys contributed several
patches to provide state-of-the-art LDAP support in the Ekiga address
book. The new code even supports authentication
 - Killed the gconf_test_age test, Ekiga can now finally work with
  badly installed GConf schemas
 - Better handling of multiple network interfaces with dynamic addition
  and removal

- Other various fixes, cleanups, removal of deprecated symbols etc.
- New translations: crh, or
- New help translation: en_GB, eu
- Updated many translations and help
 Experimental features:
 - Significant improvements in IPv6 support
 - Gstreamer audio and video capture support near to be finished...

[Bug 344310] [NEW] Many islands, atolls etc are mislabelled

2009-03-17 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Some islands and island groups, such as Fiji, the Maldives, Mauritius,
and Niue, are commonly referred to only by a single word. Many are not,
though, but Ubiquity refers to them as if they are; it omits the
essential Island, Islands, Archipelago etc. Several island names
are also missing diacritics or use out-of-date spelling.

In particular:
* Lindeman should be either Lindeman Island or Lindeman Islands
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lindeman_Island
* Chagos should be Chagos Archipelago
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chagos_Archipelago
* Lord Howe should be Lord Howe Island
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Howe_Island
* Christmas should be Christmas Island
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_Island
* Cocos should be Cocos Islands
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocos_(Keeling)_Islands
* Comoro should be either Comoro Islands
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comoro_Islands or Comoros
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comoros
* Kerguelen should be Kerguelen Islands

There are probably similar problems in the America region, but I have

In some of these cases, the missing term makes the name ambiguous; for
example Norfolk and Chatham are localities in England, but there is
only one Norfolk Island and one Chatham Islands.

[Bug 344306] [NEW] lsusb detects webcam but doesn't display the type/vendor information

2009-03-17 Thread Peter Swinkels
Public bug reported:

When I use lsusb to display the detected usb devices this is what I get:

=
Bus 005 Device 003: ID 145f:0142
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
=

The first line refers to my webcam, it doesn't appear when I run lsusb
with my webcam unplugged. All I get is the 8 digit number with a colon
in the middle. No vendor/type information. I would expect something
such as Trust. Webcam to be displayed as well.

[Bug 344313] [NEW] can't resume/suspend jaunty 64-bit

2009-03-17 Thread bobot
Public bug reported:

am running a liveCD of jaunty alpha 6.

after issuing a suspend, my screen goes blank, but power still is ON.
it doesn't go to suspended mode until i press Enter twice (as indicated by the
slowly blinking power LED).

During resume, power is turned on (as indicated by the power LED), HDD
led goes ON for a second, but screen still is blank. After a while, the
LED for capslock and Numlock responds to capslock presses and numlock
presses.

But i can't even go to a terminal (CTRL+ALT+F1) or won't even respond to
CTRL+ALT+DEL or CTRL+ALT+Backspace. But pressing the power button seems
to turn off Ubuntu, and ejects the CD. (am running on liveCD).

My laptop:
Acer Aspire 4520
Turion 64x2 1.9GHz
3GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 7000M

i'll be attaching my dmesg, version, lspci, and uname logs..

[Bug 339100] Re: jaunty upgrade fails when libboost-python-dev is installed

2009-03-17 Thread Per Ångström
I ran into a similar problem while doing an ordinary system update (Jaunty
development branch): during the update some problems were reported concerning
python, and on reboot the system was almost unusable; the update had apparently
been aborted due to python not being available, so the window manager wouldn't
start, among other things. When I had reconfigured X manually, Gnome would just
hang. The worst thing: even dpgk --configure -a wouldn't work, running into
an infinite loop. Only by removing package
 libboost-python1.35-dev 1.35.0-8ubuntu4 1.35.0-8ubuntu4 was I able to fix the
mess.

I'm absolutely chocked by the fact that a single dependency problem in a
fairly unimportant module can have such dire consequences. What could I
have done had I been less experienced with the command line - I think I
would have had to reinstall from scratch.

I'm attaching the log from the failed install and the recovery.

[Bug 306049] Re: Network-manager Looks like pppd didn't initialize our dbus module with Huawei E160G (E220) on amd64 Intrepid

2009-03-17 Thread Chris1976
I have the same problem like posted above with an Huawei E180
(Identified as E220).

pppd_timed_out(): Looks like pppd didn't initialize our dbus module is
the only thing I can see in the syslog.

I had it fixed until by installing the latest DBUS package. But that helped
exactly until the next reboot.
The problem also occures on my PC with an clean install from the latest
Intrepid Desktop CD.
Problem might be Networkmanager-independent since I am unable to connect with
Gnome-PPP as
well. If needed I can provide logfiles (this will take a little since I cannot
go online due to the problem)

[Bug 335507] Re: netspeed applet will not measure wired

I suspect the solution here would be to get the newer upstream version
of netspeed packaged and into the archives.

See bug #268727 new upstream version of netspeed applet 0.15

[Bug 159356] Re: System freeze on high memory usage

2009-03-17 Thread mad_m
I guess my problem is related to this one. I also run a very memory-consuming
batch matlab job (through a perl script). The job seems to run without problems
when I am still working on my computer. But as soon as a scrrensaver is
starting the whole system freezes. I have a frozen screensaver on my desktop
and I there is no reaction to the mouse or the keyboard. Even the power button
on the front side of the computer is not reacting and the only way to restart
the system is to switch off the power on the back of the computer.
I can awoid that the ystem is going into the screensaver mode, but the problem
is still annoying.

[Bug 344327] [NEW] Time zone map can't be navigated with the keyboard

2009-03-17 Thread Matthew Paul Thomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Ubuntu Jaunty alpha 6

1. In the installer, advance to the Where are you? step.
2. Click on Japan to select Tokyo.
3. Press the Left key.
4. Press the Right key.
5. Press the Up key.
6. Press the Down key.

What should happen:
3. The +8 time zone should become highlighted, and Shanghai should be selected.
4. The +9 time zone should become highlighted, and Tokyo should be selected.
5. The +9 time zone should remain highlighted, and Seoul should be selected.
6. The +9 time zone should remain highlighted, and Tokyo should be selected.

What actually happens: Nothing.

To implement this:
* The Left or Right key should highlight the next western or eastern time zone
respectively, and select the city in that time zone that is closest in latitude
to (A) the point that was last clicked or (B) the city that was last chosen
from the menu, whichever happened later. (Using the latitude of A or B, rather
than the latitude of the currently selected city, avoids any situation where
Left followed by Right (or vice versa) does not return you to the city you came
from.)
* The Up or Down key should select the next northern or southern city
respectively in the highlighted time zone.

Not to be confused with bug 242173, which is about navigating the menus
with the keyboard.

** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Confirmed

Odd. So could we get the lsmod output from the failing kernel and
lsmod, dmesg and lspci -vvnn from the previous working one.

[Bug 310760] Re: Built-in microphone on Lenovo USB webcam doesn't work when hald is running

2009-03-17 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Just for anyone else tracking this issue, I had Etienne test the
following:

1) sudo apt-get install linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-23-generic
2) create a file /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ignore-17ef7802.fdi to look like:

deviceinfo version=0.2
  device
match key=usb_device.vendor_id int=6127
  match key=usb_device.product_id int=18434
merge key=info.ignore type=booltrue/merge
  /match
/match
  /device
/deviceinfo

3) reboot and test

linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-23-generic provides alsa-driver-1.0.16 and
the .fdi file prevents hal from probing the device. Etienne provided the
following feedback:

It works perfectly well. At least, in the sense that we can get both
the mic and the webcam working. Of course, the webcam do not work in
application that relies on HAL (ie, Cheese), but in those that use
ALSA/V4L directly (such as VLC), it work just fine indeed.
