[Bug 351215] Re: failsafe mode needs to not suggest reconfiguration if graphics hardware in inconsistent state

2009-03-30 Thread Amit Kucheria
The failsafe mode did allow me to analyse the error and see the log
files. So presumably, we know that the HW is in a bad state as shown by
the Xorg.0.log from that particular bug:

(WW) intel(0): PRB0_CTL (0x0001f001) indicates ring buffer enabled
(WW) intel(0): PRB0_HEAD (0x7341d4dc) and PRB0_TAIL (0x0001d638) indicate ring
buffer not flushed
(WW) intel(0): Existing errors found in hardware state.
Error in I830WaitLpRing(), timeout for 2 seconds

What was interesting to me is the fact that the graphics HW was still
capable of running is some low-res mode (framebuffer?). So perhaps it
wasn't completely unrecoverable after all?

What is the ring buffer and how is it used by the driver?

If we know what it is, I could try to concentrate on reproducing my
actions to stress that part of the HW.

I am not able to reproduce the bug just by having many Firefox tabs
and going to graphics intensive websites. So that might be a red
herring.

[Bug 348316] Re: Printer (HWModel Name) May Not Be Connected

2009-03-30 Thread Till Kamppeter
Nick A, now where you have iot working can you do the following:

Start system-config-printer (System -> Administration -> Printing),
click on the "New" button and follow the wizard to create a new printer.
In the end give a new name (like "test") to your new printer. Say "Yes"
when you are asked to print a test page. Does it print? Independent
whether it prints or not, run the troubleshooting wizard of system-
config-printer (Help -> Troubleshooting). Do it once selecting the
printer you have created with the Foomatic Control Panel and once
selecting the new printer which you have just created with system-
config-printer.

Nick A, the is the name which you give to the
printer with system-config-printer or the Foomatic Control Panel and
which also appears in the printing dialogs of your applications. It is
Stylus-CX4800 for the printer which did not work for you in the
beginning.

Ah, apologies- "Generic" is an oft-used string for USB headsets from

asoundconf appears to be a red herring for most users given the advent
of PulseAudio; we'll be removing it from karmic's alsa-utils (Debian
won't ship it, either).

Can you test `aplay -Dplughw:1 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav'?

[Bug 345344] Re: [jaunty] The "Shut Down", "Restart" and "Log Out" buttons do not appear translatable

2009-03-30 Thread Timo Jyrinki
I can only comment on the priority issue, while it looks like the bug is
well on its way to getting fixed. But it is a persisting issue that I18N
problems are still being classified as Low or even Wishlist priority,
while these problems essentially break parts of Ubuntu for most of the
world's people. I do think the priority should be High in most cases of
visible default install I18N problems like this. These are the problems
that get mentioned separately in eg. magazines doing a review of Ubuntu.

Another point of view is noting that the number 2. point at Ubuntu
philosophy (http://www.ubuntu.com/community/ubuntustory/philosophy)
should not be something of a "Low" or "Wishlist" priority.

[Bug 351408] [NEW] tbf kills torrents

2009-03-30 Thread David Burgess
Public bug reported:

I've been using a QOS script for years to keep voip and general internet
usage usable with torrents running on the same connection. Until
recently this script has worked very well. Now torrents are seeding very
slowly, but return to maximum speed immediately when the QOS script is
unloaded.

Reproducing this problem is very simple:

1. Seed some active torrents without limiting your upload rate.
2. Code:

tc qdisc add dev eth1 root handle 1: tbf rate 675kbit latency 50ms burst
1540

where eth1 is the connected to the internet with a routable IP address
on a connection that is limited to greater than 675 kbps by the ISP.

3. Watch your torrent upload speed drop to 10 KiB/s or less within seconds.
4. Code:

sudo tc qdisc del dev eth1 root 2> /dev/null > /dev/null

5. Watch your upload speed return to normal within seconds.

[Bug 336034] Re: Cannot copy and paste a file on remote PC

2009-03-30 Thread Robert Ancell
Hi, thanks for taking the time to report this.

To request a backport a bug needs to be raised against the hardy-backports
product, not the ubuntu product:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports#request-new-packages

I'm closing this bug as it doesn't affect the latest version of Ubuntu
and the bug is not severe enough to warrant changing the official Hardy
package. It is appropriate for backporting however so please follow the
instructions above.

substantially slower than OpenGL.

[Bug 351415] [NEW] gdmsetup "Help" from Gnome is not that helpful

Hi,

The documentation which appears when "Help" is hit from the gdmsetup gui
is not very helpful. It brings up the full gdm configuration
documentation, mostly referencing text file configuration, which for the
lay-user is not at all "helpful" with regard to the GUI they are

[Bug 351411] [NEW] "Use largest available free space" option fails to select

2009-03-30 Thread Tristan Greaves
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Hi,

When installing the Ubuntu 9 beta from CD, I had partitioned my hard
disk manually. This involved resizing the Windows partition down to
make space for Ubuntu. I did this using gparted, outside the
installation process.

When it came to installing Ubuntu, although "Use largest available free
space" was an option (and not greyed out), clicking the radio button had
no effect. It did not become selected. I had to partition manually to
get the installation to proceed.

Apologies for not having logs to hand, but can provide further
information from installed system if it helps.

not get processed.

Can you delete all the jobs from the queue (you can alternatively do
"cancel -a" on the command line) and also turn off and turn on the
router and the printer and then try the troubleshooting wizard again?
Make also sure to use the troubleshooting wizard correctly. See

2009-03-30 Thread jari
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

After updating to Jaunty, some flickering occurs on the right hand side
of the screen, especially when switching applications. This is on Lenovo
ThinkPad T60 with ATI Mobility Radeon X1300, with the practically empty
xorg.conf automatically created when installing Intrepid. Screen did not
flicker in Intrepid, only after the upgrade.

Hi Alessio,

Thank you for taking care of this. I would have done this sync request after
Jaunty release but I'm fine with you doing it now. The main reason why I
uploaded -2ubuntu1 was to have a functional wide-dhcpv6 20080615 in Jaunty
with as little differences as possible between the previous Ubuntu version and
what I had already have uploaded to Debian since we were already way past
DebianImportFreeze and this wasn't suitable for a freeze exception.

Cheers,

[Bug 349361] Re: Users and Groups tool fails to authenticate.

2009-03-30 Thread Chris Coulson
This happens because the DBus call to the Policykit agent uses the
default DBus timeout (10 seconds I think). The applications shouldn't
assume they will get a response within 10 seconds, as the response only
arrives after the user typed in their password.

I can't confirm the other behaviour you describe though. For me, just
closing the Policykit authentication dialog and clicking Unlock again to
open a new one works for me, without having to close the application.
After looking through the code, I see no reason why this wouldn't work
for you.

[Bug 351427] [NEW] Add "use max resolution checkbox+functionality" to gnome-display-properties

2009-03-30 Thread Uwe L. Korn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Often people have connected two displays with their laptop where the
second, external one is not always connected and has another aspect
ratio than the internal. Starting up the xorg-server with both connect
it falls back to the highest resolution both have. For example using my
EeePC 901 with a 1024x768 external display connected it falls back to
800x600. Sure, this is a feature which shouldn't be changed in xorg-
server, but I would like to have the max resolution of each screehn, so
that my internal display uses 1024x600 and the external 1024x768. At the
moment I have to run a "xrandr --size 0" after login. The problem hereby
is, that this is not really userfriendly and my gnome-panel gets messed
up while the resolution is at 800x600.

My wish:
 - Add a checkbox with the caption "Use max resolution of connected displays"
 - If this option was checked, directly after the gnome-session was started,
the command "xrandr -s 0"(or an equivalent) should be issued, before any
application in this sessionn is started

[Bug 76796] Re: evolutions consums lots of cpu while pinging imap server

2009-03-30 Thread Tomasz Sterna
I confirm that this problem still exists in current Jaunty.

Just after starting Evolution communicates with IMAP server (Dovecot) fine, but
when the server closes IDLE connection, Evolution starts eating 100% CPU and do
nothing (there are messages on status bar, that it is refreshing IMAP folders).
Once I kill evolution and restart it does not help - Evolution eats 100% CPU
just after starting. I need to go in ~/.evolution/mail/imap, remove the IMAP
account cache ant then after launching Evolution works fine - until the next
disconnection, when the cycle repeats.

I absolutely agree too.
This bug keeps me from upgrading my Ma's Ubuntu.
She often usese her Digicam and imagine that Usecase:
I upgrade to 8.10 or 9.04, she plugs in her digicam and she obviously
wont be able to download the photos which would cause an instant
call with screaming words:
"Son what have you done? I cannot download my photos anymore!
Is the cam broken?"
Shall i tell her that this is expected behaviour?

For normal users this is the absolut opposite of expected behaviour!

Sorry for the harsh words

[Bug 350217] [NEW] Upgrade (+FGLRX?) causes KDE login to fail

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

and pass the login progress box (with the spanner, blue sphere, hard
drive icon, desktop icon etc) never comes up. The cursor is there and
visible, but it just seems to hang other than that.

If I do a ctrl+f1, kdm.log shows:
"(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:0...@1:0:1)
found
swlDalGetDisplayIndex:ERROR: The number of Active Displays is 0
swlDalGetDisplayIndex:ERROR: The number of Active Displays is 0
Failed to set aperture, ret = 0x0001"

syslog.log repeats at random seeming points throught:
Mar 27 20:43:14 the-beast kdm_greet[3997]: Cannot open default user face"

...and an assortment of goodies from Xorg.0.log, including:
"(WW) This ATI Proprietary Linux Driver does not guarantee support of video
driver ABI higher than 2.0
(WW) Video driver ABI version of the X server is 5.0"

"(WW) fglrx(0): could not detect X server version (query_status=-1)"

and a whole stack of:
"(WW) AIGLX: 3D driver claims to not support visual [0x23 - 72]"

I had something similar just recently and thought I'd managed to fix it just by
chown'ing my home folder, however I tried this again and it did nothing. Trying
to revert to the ATI driver just seems to make things worse. With ATI even the
KDM is replaced by just a white screen that no keyboard shortcut (inc SysRQ
ones) can reset.

All my packages are up do date with none being held back. I'm on Kubuntu
Jaunty AMD64.

[Bug 277589] Re: sony brighness on a geforce series older than 8 (nvclock works fine)

2009-03-30 Thread Steve Langasek
Ok, I've confirmed the problem here. The following setting:

  info.addons = {'hald-addon-generic-backlight'} (string list)

is not what we wanted, we wanted

  org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.LaptopPanel.method_names =
{'SetBrightness','GetBrightness'} (string list)

and I can see how the patch that was applied is buggy, it short-circuits
because linux.sysfs_path is set.

Martin, what's the appropriate way to address this? Duplicate the logic
from 10-laptop-panel-mgmt-policy.fdi in 10-sony-laptop-brightness.fdi?

i don't know if this will help you, but it helped me.

try running this command in a terminal - xinput set-button-map "Logitech
USB Trackball" 1 9 3 4 5 6 7 8 2 (i had to switch 9 and 2 ) to get the
left scroll button function

i'm guessing that anyone with a bit of python knowledge or some thing
could make a start script, but i just added the command to the start up
applications (on ubuntu jaunty)

cheers

[Bug 351429] [NEW] file-roller associates itself with windows executables that it can't handle

2009-03-30 Thread Scott Ritchie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: file-roller

Intrepid and Jaunty both have a very frustrating bug for Wine users -
double clicking a Windows executable causes it to open in File Roller
and generate a very cryptic "Null" error report.

In /usr/share/applications/file-roller.desktop, file-roller associates
itself with "application/x-ms-dos-executable", which is what causes this
behavior.

[Bug 350217] Re: Upgrade (+FGLRX?) causes KDE login to fail

2009-03-30 Thread Shaved Wookie
OK, after talking with a few other people having this problem we managed
to figure this out. It is *not* FGLRX related, it's that somewhere along
the line a couple of days ago, automatic updates removed kdebase-
workspace-bin (and possibly some other needed files)! This happened on
both 32bit, 64bit, Intel and AMD architectures.

Remedy is as simple as sudo apt-get install kdebase-userspace-bin in a
console.

If we could still rename this bug to something that would be recognised
by someone searching for an answer to this problem that would be great,
as it's not just fglrx users affected.

Cheers

[Bug 312898] Re: libxxx-unstripped should also Provide libxxx

2009-03-30 Thread pilat
libav*-dev packages conflict with libav*-unstripped-52. There are two
solutions, imo:
1. fix dependencies between "libav*-dev" and "libav*-unstripped-52" somehow;
2. add new packages: "libav*-unstripped-52-dev".

Note: "libav*-dev" required when building something from sources. For
example: http://kradio.sourceforge.net/
