[Bug 421585] [NEW] Sync lives 1.0.0-5 (multiverse) from Debian unstable (main).

2009-08-30 Thread Alessio Treglia
Public bug reported:

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

 status confirmed

Please sync lives 1.0.0-5 (multiverse) from Debian unstable (main).

Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
No delta with Debian, we should sync this.

Changelog since current karmic version 1.0.0-4ubuntu1:

lives (1.0.0-5) unstable; urgency=low

  * Removed the bit about PATH from debian/wrapper/lives
  * Removed duplicate entry of Niels Elburg from debian/copyright
  * Added the right dependencies taken from the packaging notes
  * Fixed debian/watch to not think pre-release versions are newer than
release ones
  * Replaced automake1.10 with automake
  * Made frei0r-plugins-dev and frei0r-plugins not for kfreebsd
  * Made libavc1394, libavc1394-dev, libraw1394 and libraw1394-dev not for
kfreebsd
  * Added SVN and VCS Browser URL's to debian/control
  * Made the end of the smogrify manpage a bit more formal
  * Removed the autogen.sh bit from debian/rules as it doesn't seem to work
Seeing as autogen.sh doesn't seem to be needed dh must do all the stuff
automatically
   * Removed the shard library depends from Depends

[Bug 421583] [NEW] Dell Inspiron Latitude X200 - Distorted display in both Gnome KDE

2009-08-30 Thread deutne
Public bug reported:

The problem started when I upgraded from Intrepid to Jaunty. My display
gets distorted in both KDE and Gnome. I do not have to Supend or
Hibernate first then Resume to get the distortions. I suspect that the
problem occurs after Java begins running because the problem often
begins after I use web sites with complex code, e.g. gmail, Facebook.
Sometimes when I go into the Display settings from the menu and change
the resolution, I can get the distrotions to clear up temporarily, but
they always come back. I have been limping along with this problem for
well over a month now, and it has made my system pretty much unbearable.

I have attached output from 'ubuntu-bug linux' and 2 files (I hope)
containing screenshots of some typical distortions.

[Bug 412580] Re: Wishlist : One-time language selection

2009-08-30 Thread Stéphane Graber
This was the behavior of the first implementation of language selection in LDM.
Though for consistency reason with gdm 2.26 in current distros, it was decided
to drop that dialog and use the users' preferred language by default and not
prompt the user.
Also, as the language is only known once the session is established with the
server, it's not possible to know the language of the session in ldm itself.

As the current behavior is the one that was decided by both distributions and
upstream LTSP, I'm marking the bug as won't fix.
Thank you for your report.

[Bug 412197] Re: LDM should display a message when the user makes an error in his password instead of restarting

2009-08-30 Thread Stéphane Graber
We need a reliable way to know if the login failure comes from a server issue
(unresponsive, bad ssh configuration) or a user issue (expired password, wrong
password).
As we currently have to parse SSH's output and this one's varying between
versions and locales, it's not possible to do so at the moment. This bug will
only be fixed once we have a reliable way to know the SSH answer on all distros
and with different locales, something like libssh (once it's fully implemented).
I'm marking the bug as wishlist.

Re: [Lubuntu-desktop] [Bug 420513] Re: [needs packaging] lubuntu desktop meta

2009-08-30 Thread David Sugar
I had wanted to get feedback sooner and hence see this done earlier.
Most if not all of these changes noted are certainly valid. Where we
touch upon what the default apps should be, my only concern is that we
do not have a lot of revs. If we are going to split the seed to produce
variants of default apps, we should do so now. If not, I think we
should accept that it will be resolved as a post-Karmic issue and simply
come together to make the best choices we can for this first release.

Julien Lavergne wrote:
 @Martin-Eric
you should publish a bzr branch and propose to merge with the current one for
all the fixes you done. It should be easier than a patch.
Also, the choice of defaults applications should be discuss separately, the
more important for now is to add the package itself to the repository. It's
 easier to made adjustments after.

Just a remember, we are in Feature Freeze, so it needs a Freeze
 Exception (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreezeExceptionProcess)

[Bug 421593] [NEW] vlc plays back dv clips with corrupt sound

2009-08-30 Thread Robert Persson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

I have some DV clips originally recorded with a Sony DCR-TRV110E and
captured using Kino in raw mode. The clips play fine in Totem. However
in VLC the sound consists of buzzes squeeks and squits, a bit like the
sounds you often hear quietly with a sound card that is close to other
components of a computer.

I am using VLC 0.9.9a in Jaunty.

I shall upload a clip which triggers this behaviour.

swap partition, Balance = shared drive, installation successful.

[Bug 66015] Re: Duplicate spell checking dictionaries for every entry

2009-08-30 Thread era
Attached is a trivial monkey patch against an installed toolkit.jar
which simply replaces the separator between the language and region
codes from dash to underscore -- just unpack the jar file, patch -p0
inlineSpellCheck.patch, zip back together and replace the system
version with the result.

Still remaining to do is fix each myspell-${lg}-${tr} package to not
create the now (hopefully) unnecessary lg-TR symlinks into
/usr/share/myspell/dicts -- this is all based on the assumption that
only Firefox ever needed them.

(I'm still stuck with an en-US entry in the languages menu although I
deleted /usr/share/myspell/dicts/??-??.{aff,dic} but the others are
gone.)

[Bug 418002] Re: no sound on fresh install of 9.04 jaunty jackelope

2009-08-30 Thread triksteerx
Okay so I looked over the debugging page, and I have done everything on
that page at least once before.

Is your sound system plugged in and switched on. I spent an hour trying
to diagnose a sound issue when the problem was that I had switched off
the speakers to answer a phone call and forgot that I had done so.

Yes, that was the first thing I checked.

From command line: Open a terminal window and launch alsamixer. Then unmute as
described above.

I believe I stated in my original post that alsamixer is not working.

From GUI: This can be done by running something like gnome-alsamixer from a
terminal window or navigating to your your Volume Control. Then unmute as
described above. Also check that your switches are set correctly - for instance
that if you use the analog output the analog switch is set ON or that the
digital or S/PDIF switch is set OFF. You can select which tracks/switches are
visible in Volume Control (see above) under Edit-Preferences.

First thing I tried.

Most sound applications output to card0 by default. In some cases, other audio
devices (like a USB MIDI Keyboard) might be recognized as a soundcard and take
card0, bumping your real soundcard to card1. To see which devices are connected
to which cards, do the following:

trikst...@triksterx-desktop:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
--- no soundcards ---

As you can see, this is where I start running into a problem. I am
constantly running into a no soundcard message, even though my lspci
output clearly shows that I have an on-board sound card.

Make sure that all users needing access to the Sound Device can Use audio
devices in the User Privileges tab of users-admin
(System-Administration-Users and Groups).

Second thing I tried.

Test different Sound Servers: Go to System Preferences Sound
(Multimedia Systems Selector in earlier editions of Ubuntu). From there, you
can test the different options. In some scenarios several different sound
servers may be installed, and only one may work. This is probably the origin of
the problem if you cannot play audio with xine or rhythmbox, but you can with
xmms or helix/realplayer.

Tried it, didn't work.

If you can get absolutely no sound and you have an onboard sound chip you can
try to disable it in the BIOS. This solves the problem is some cases.

No settings in my BIOS for sound chips.

If you have no sound and you have a regular sound card type lsmod | grep snd
in the terminal and see if there is more than one card listed. It's possible
that you have a motherboard sound chip that is interfering. Add it to the
bottom of the blacklist file. For example, sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
then add blacklist snd_via82xx to the bottom.

I only have a Mobo soundcard. Output of command is nothing.

Since I have filed the bug report I have also tried to upgrade to the latest
version of alsa, with no luck.

I did a fresh install of 8.04 Hardy, and the sound works perfectly on
that, with no settings changed. Is there really a change so drastic
that my well supported card suddenly is no longer supported? I know the
drivers are all there, my sound system works, and my soundcard works.
It is most definitely a problem with ALSA 1.0.18, so is there a way to
revert to the version used in 8.04 Hardy?

[Bug 421610] [NEW] No slash-character ( / ) in file names possible

2009-08-30 Thread libertarian
Public bug reported:

Neither the Nautilus file chooser nor the bash via the touch command
allows me to create a filename containing a slash in Ubuntu 9.04

I tried to create a file with the following name: Directive 2009/38/EC
It failed and I wasn't able to use an escape sequence like a backslash.

So is there a different slash-character available in the UTF-8 set or an escape
sequence?
What is the right way to trigger this different character?

How could these possible solutions, if they exist, be integrated into
the bash and the file chooser?

Maybe this is a candidate for the hundred-paper-cuts project?

[Bug 418617] Re: Sound Prefrences applet does not offer a way for laptop users to use mic jack attached mic

2009-08-30 Thread Jerone Young
To follow up on this more I bring the example of the Lenovo Thinkpad.

It has 3 ways of recording audio:

1) internal mic

2) mic jack

3) dock mic
   * if your on a docking station you can have a microphone attached. This is a
seperate codec (mixer) from the mic jack.

Exactly how does a user use the doc mic ? This is why you cannot have
everything be automatic as you make assumtions that may not be true for
all users.

In this case a user could have a mic plugged into the dock, but wants to
use their headset to record. Maybe both just happened to be plugged in
and they want to use the internal mic as they have many friends who want
to chat who are with them.

2009-08-30 Thread Martin Pitt
@Scott Zawalski:
I wasn't able to get the skdump jmicron output

You should be able to do that right after pluggin in the drive. After an
skdump invocation you need to unplug/replug the drive to reinitialize
it.

@Wesley: Can you please also provide the skdump outputs, as described in
comment 42?

Thanks!

It might or might not yield anything helpful, but someone might try
running with with -v eit, siparser (either one or both) logging turned
on overnight. Might produce some really large log files, so be sure to
turn it off in the morning!

[Bug 264586] Re: dns table overwritten by second server

2009-08-30 Thread Matt Trudel
This doesn't look to me like a bug, but more like intended
functionality: NetworkManager will prefer wired connections when they
are made available. A workaround to this is to manually specify settings
for an interface in /etc/network/interfaces, which will let
NetworkManager ignore the interface.

I'm marking this an Invalid since there is so little information to
suggest that it would be anything other than expected behavior. Please
reopen it if you can give us additional information, and don't hesitate
to submit bug reports in the future. To reopen the bug report you can
click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the
Status back to New. Thanks!

[Bug 421617] [NEW] USB Dongle Not Detected Since Upgrade to Network Manager 0.8x

2009-08-30 Thread Andy Rogers
Public bug reported:

Since my laptop has been u[graded from Network Manager 0.71 to 0.8x in
Karmic my Edimax Wiress USB dongle has failed to be picked up by Network
Manager in Gnome.

Before I had no problems with it workling very robostly.

Sometimes it will be picked up and listed in the network manager list,
but 9 times out of 10 it is failed to be picked up.

Down grading back to NM 0.71 does bring it back to life a bit, but is
sitill noto as robost as it was before, it will keep dropping the
connection and failing to reconnect.

In the early stages of the Karmic cycle on Kernel 2.6.31 I reported
another bug which was here
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/396417 , but iam
reporting these seperatley as this was since Network Manager got
upgraded.

I have eaited a couple of weeks so see if a fix got released as there
are other Bugs against NM but am filing this now.
