[Bug 610427] Re: acer heating up

2010-07-28 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 610427

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your
bug report.

Please also look at System --> Administration --> System Monitor &
report the name of the process (or processes) that is consuming a lot of
cpu &/or Memory resources.

Thanks in advance!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 559822] Re: editra is provided by both the editra package and python-wxtools and conflicts

2010-07-28 Thread corrie
The current packages in proposed also do not work:

1. Installing editra first:
package lucid-proposed/universe editra 0.5.30-1ubuntu0.1 installs with no issues

But then:
Unpacking python-wxtools (from .../python-wxtools_2.8.10.1-0ubuntu1.1_all.deb)
...
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/python-wxtools_2.8.10.1-0ubuntu1.1_all.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/editra', which is also in package editra
0:0.5.30-1ubuntu0.1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/python-wxtools_2.8.10.1-0ubuntu1.1_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

2. Installing python-wxtools first, and then editra, also fails, for the
same reason.

[Bug 610356] Re: mantis requires php5-mysql

2010-07-28 Thread Olivier Berger
What do you suggest exactly in #2 ? AFAIU, recommends is "stronger" than
suggests, so... everything is fine ATM :
* suggests mysql-server a one may not run the RDBMS on the same machine, but
that's an option (hence only suggests and not recommends)
* recommends php5-mysql, as even with a remote mysql server, you'd need the
client libs locally... but still not a dependency as you may choose postgres
for instance.
* php-cli... well, most people probably run php with mod-php library for
apache, but some may prefer some CGI-like like if installing in a weird apache
config (for SOAP for instance, etc.)

Hope this helps.

[Bug 609092] Re: libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when "unix password sync" is off

2010-07-28 Thread Thierry Carrez
Could you precise what you mean by "installed by default" ?
It certainly isn't installed on Ubuntu Desktop by default, and it's not
installed in the default Server install either. It's installed in the "Samba
File Server" task in the server installer. It also gets installed when you
enable file sharing on the desktop. In both cases that sounds like a sane
default behavior.

The reason why it syncs unix passwords when "unix password sync" is off
is that libpam-smbpass is an alternative way of syncing Unix and Samba
passwords: instead of syncing them at passwd change (which is what "unix
password sync" does), libpam-smbpass (if present) syncs them when the
user logs in. The way to disable it is to uninstall libpam-smbpass.

[Bug 361903] Re: Cursor Keys not working with NXClient

2010-07-28 Thread Reinhard Berger
The get this thing working, you must have the same version of NXCleint
and NXServer running on the machines.

If not both versions are 3.4.x it will not work.

Example : If you have Version less then 3.4 on server side and client
version 3.4.x then it does not work.

Both Server and Client need to be have the same version, if you only
change server or client it doesnt work too.

Tested with hardy 8.04 with nxserver 3.4.0-12 and lucid 10.04 with
nxclient 3.4.0-7.

Also i think if both system uses same X-Server Version the bug should
not appear even on older nxcleint/nxserver - dont't know for sure just
think so.

The Bug is fixed since NoMachine released newer versions of
nxcleint/nxserver.

Either this is still a bug in X-Server and NoMachine works around of
this wiith thier new versions, or the NXServer program itself has had a
bug with X-Server 1.6 - hard to tell where the problem is.

But since it is working now with newer versions of NXServer/NXCleint
this bug is gone and this is the main thing , doesnt matter how it has
been fixed.

[Bug 359658] Re: evolution crashed with SIGSEGV in strcmp()

2010-07-28 Thread Oded Arbel
I'm sorry, but I didn't encounter this problem again on my system.

My personal opinion as a developer is that changing bad code for good
code is a good idea, and even if the original problem is not
reproduceable and even if the patch is not being tested, that fix still
makes sense and should go in - preventing SIGSEGV should be no. 1
priority of developers.

Here's the GNOME official documentation of g_str_equal() (the call being
replaced by the patch):
---8<---
Note that this function is primarily meant as a hash table comparison function.
For a general-purpose, NULL-safe string comparison function, see g_strcmp0().
---8<---

Which as I read it means: don't ever use g_str_equal() as a general
string comparison method. IMHO no testing feedback should be required to
apply this patch, because it makes sense the original code is bad.

[Bug 538648] Re: [Intel GM45] Irregular sync flashes on 8086:2a42 (Needs i915.powersave quirk)

2010-07-28 Thread Max Jonas Werner
This bug is absolutely annoying and implicitly also a security issue
since I'm using apw's kernel mentioned as a workaround, so I'm not able
to fetch security updates to the kernel. (workaround no. 2 is not an
option since battery life is important to me.)

Is there a good reason for not including the patches from apw's kernel
into the official ubuntu kernels to make the flicker disappear?

[Bug 610760] [NEW] column headings do not stand out well

2010-07-28 Thread Eshwar Andhavarapu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: light-themes

Seems like an unfortunate change but in any case i am not sure if this
was inteded. - the column headings in maverick, e.g. in synaptic or
startup disk creator are separated from the data only by lines and
nothing else. This wasn't the case in lucid. I mean to say the headings
no longer stand out as headings. they look more like a normal
spreadsheet with manual headings. was that an intentional change? only
noticed in ambiance so far.

[Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

I seem to have a queer version of the random freezes case. My desktop
freezes (except for being able to open a terminal through the keyboard

control the volume and when rhythmbox is running. It freezes rhythmbox
and firefox and many other windows (can't seem to find a pattern as to
which here) and when I kill rhythmbox the freeze is gone.

[Bug 390508] Re: notify-send ignores the expire timeout parameter

2010-07-28 Thread Mike Hartman
Ok, I've read through this whole thread and I've got to side with the
pro-custom-timeout people. This is friggin ridiculous. Here's another
use case at the opposite end of the spectrum from most of the above:

I have a perfectly good script built around notify-send I was using on
Gentoo. It worked fine there with whatever DNS-compatible notification
daemon I had installed (obviously not NotifyOSD). It's short and simple
- it just watches the log file for a local application server and
notifies me when it has stopped or started.

Build, deploy and server restart cycles can take quite a long time -
often 10-20 minutes plus. During that time I might wander away, or start
doing something in another window, but I absolutely do not want to miss
that notification. If I leave for 5 minutes and the server finishes
restarting while I'm gone I want that notification to still be visible
when I get back. So my notify-send call specified a pretty long duration
(around 10 minutes). This was practical because whichever (superior)
notification system was installed also allowed the user to close
notifications early after they'd been read.

I switched over to Ubuntu a couple weeks ago because I've been running
it on my wife's machines for months and it's grown on me. I've been
pretty happy with it overall - definitely some annoyances but Googling
and liberal use of gconf have generally been enough to work around them.
But I'm trying to get back up to functional parity with what I had in
Gentoo, particularly work-related stuff like this monitor, and I've been
banging my head against this bug/deliberate gimping for hours.

I've installed the patched version of NotifyOSD from the PPA mentioned
above, and it did take care of the timeout issue. But there appears to
be no way for me to kill the notifications before they naturally expire.
So I either run a very good chance of missing the notifications, or I
see them and then they're stuck in the corner of my screen for ten
minutes with no way to clear them. Not going to work.

Several times in this thread it's been suggested that if you don't like
the way NotifyOSD works you should install something else. That's a
pretty ridiculous thing to suggest to developers planning to distribute
their code, but since this is just for my personal use, fine. There
seems to be a problem with that approach though - Synaptic won't let me
uninstall notify-osd without also removing ubuntu-desktop, which seems
like a pretty significant package.

It seems like only one of these notification daemons can run at a time
(which makes sense if they're all reading the same D-Bus messages). I
tried installing notification-daemon without removing notify-osd and the
system just keeps on using the latter. So I'm very confused as to what
I'm expected to do at this point.

If the Ubuntu devs truly think their "alternate interpretation" of the
DNS spec is actually in line with the spec, then why wouldn't I be able
to swap out their daemon for any other compatible daemon and still have
ubuntu-desktop work? If ubuntu-desktop is transmitting proper messages
based on the spec then anything else should be able to display them,
right? Otherwise I don't see how Ubuntu isn't violating the same "don't
assume stuff about the notification server" principle that others in
this thread have used to criticize people complaining about the ignored
-t parameter.

Does anyone know if:

- there's something I can manually edit to remove this dependency so I
can switch to notification-daemon and still keep ubuntu desktop?

- there is a way to run both NotifyOSD for ubuntu-desktop and
notification-daemon for notify-send at the same time? Some way of
telling notify-send to use an alternate D-Bus channel to connect with
notification-daemon or something?

- there is some other simple command to fire simple messages that
actually works in the way I want? I don't care if these notifications
blend in seamlessly with Ubuntu's. I just want something that will pop
up, not steal focus, expire when I decide it should, yet let me manually
close it early. Bear in mind this is an extremely basic script.

This whole situation is disappointing. The beauty of the notification
spec combined with notify-send is that throwing a nice looking GUI
notification is no harder than echoing text to the console, and is just
as cross-distro. Or at least it was up until this point.

[Bug 390508] Re: notify-send ignores the expire timeout parameter

2010-07-28 Thread Mike Hartman
Surprisingly there's no way to go back and edit these comments after
posting (that I can find, anyway) and my questions won't help me much if
they're hidden behind a click-through, so here they are again:

Does anyone know if:

- there is a way to run both NotifyOSD for ubuntu-desktop and

[Bug 603022] Re: [MIR] mlterm

2010-07-28 Thread Arne Goetje
I prefer to not add an additional switch to language-selector, but install it
for everyone who installs translations in a language which uses RTL scripts.
And surely it shouldn't replace gnome-terminal, just be an alternative.
Users who need to use a terminal and deal with RTL text, will know or figure
out which one to use. mlterm has been pretty popular already in such circles, I
assume.
