[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor

2010-10-05 Thread Martin Pitt
We can't set turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup to True again. We
already had that, and it causes external monitors to get powered off.
This means that you can't use a docked laptop with an external monitor
any more, since we don't have any cleverness to detect whether the lid
is closed at startup and the internal screen should be powered off (this
is because of too many buggy BIOSes, not because we couldn't implement
it).

So it seems that both settings cause problems. Can't we just entirely
disable this xrandr messing by default? On normal single-screen
settings, KMS and X should already care about the resolution, and any
mode change that we introduce will not only be prone to misconfigure
your screens, but also introduce major startup latencies and thus slow
down boot.

** Summary changed:

- Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor
+ automatic xrandr module misconfigures monitors

** Changed in: gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu Maverick)

[Bug 655012] [NEW] Webkit-Gtk slow performance on some sites

2010-10-05 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

On sites such as http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/ and
http://www.ubuntugamer.com/ Webkit-GTK is very slow. It must have
something to do with their layout, as both use something similar. It
slows down the entire application to where it is barely usable until the
tab is closed or I navigate somewhere else. This happens with both
Midori and Epiphany, but not Firefox. (It does not affect gecko
obviously).

Re: [Bug 654515] Re: Dual-head setup only possible with stacked screen combination

2010-10-05 Thread Sander Alberink
Hi Dave,

I'm not sure I subscribe to this explanation. I had Lucid Lynx running on
this very same laptop and panel, and that was working without a hitch. To be
honest, I ran Kubuntu on that at the time, but technically this all seems to
work, it's just that Ubuntu doesn't take advantage. I will re-test this
using Kubuntu, to see if it works there.

Yes, I agree, this seems to be it. I checked with /lib/udev/keymap -i,
and SysRq doesn't produce an evdev event, as intended by this patch.
Thanks for confirming!

Mathieu Trudel writes:

That's a difficult question. It would be nice to restart connman
automatically, but on the other hand we do not want to suddenly
disconnect user's network connection. That's extremely annoying for the
user.

An example: my boss suddenly disappeared from our team meeting on a voip
call. The reason was that he was updating his laptop during the meeting
and connman upgrade disconnected his network. And if there are lots of
packages to upgrade, it can stay disconnected a long time. Not good.

IIRC when connman was still using init.d scripts it worked so that
connman wasn't restarted during upgrade but /var/run/restart-required
was set so that user would have to reboot manually. I think that's the
safest choise. Forcing users to reboot is also annoying, but do we have
any better options? Mathieu, what do you think?

connman does connect to the network again after an upgrade, at least it
does that for me. So I don't see this as a problem.

[Bug 620606] Re: KUbuntu 10.04 freezes on boot with Glib warning getpwuid_r() failed...

2010-10-05 Thread Jon Sahlberg
I have a laptop with similar specs at work (HP/Compaq nc6320) and I was
wondering why the bug appears only on my home laptop (HP/Compaq nx7400)
but not at work. Well today the bug appeared also on my work laptop. The
only difference in the setups is that my work laptop has 32bit Ubuntu
(versus 64bit KUbuntu at home). In my mind this would state that the bug
is really quite random, and effects both 32bit and 64bit environments.

[Bug 363859] Re: empathy should allow custom group sorting

2010-10-05 Thread Guillaume Lecanu
I love Empathy, replaced by Pidgin since Lucid is out, but this
regression rather Pidgin is really bad... I have about 10 groups and a
lots of contacts, it's really not usefull like that... :-(

And I don't see any option to rename groups to sort them like I want.

Please guys, is it possible to have this option like in Pidgin please ?

Thanks a lots !

[Bug 327189] Re: Unable to mount ~/Private directory

2010-10-05 Thread Kielo S.
Same for me, after installing samba and adding a share I noticed that my
homedirectory was gone (or at least half of it), but accessible via the command
line.
After removing samba and login out/in I had the encrypted homedir plus the
issue of not being able to really log in due to a lack of permissions on some
applications and such (such as nautilus and so on).

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2010-10-05 Thread Vide
I'm using Ubunto 10.10 and the bug, with gedit and a fstab mounted CIFS share,
is still there.
Steps to reproduce (the usuals):
- create a new file with gedit in the remote share
- type something
- Ctrl+S to save
- type something
- Ctrl+S to save: bug happens!

And to all the people/developers saying we should use gvfs+cifs... well,
I'll do it when I'll get the same performances as with kernel mode CIFS
(50MB/s (fifty) against 6MB/s (six))

[Bug 655021] [NEW] Kexi crashes when trying to create a text field in the form editor

I opened Kexi in a Tilda terminal. I opened a new form. I tried to create a

This is what the terminal put out: "~$ kexi

[Bug 649553] Re: system hangs, bounces, oom-killer invoked on UNR live SD card

2010-10-05 Thread Fabio Marconi
If you are not in accord with my decision, simply click on the jellow pencil
under status and set to what you want (i've already donefor you).
I simply think that this is not a bug.
If you are convinced that this is a bug, please look at the top in the yellow
stripe, near the written Ubuntu there's a little triangle, click on it, type
linux, save changes, so one of the linux experts can read this report.
Then, if possible, lauch again the live session and run in a terminal
apport-collect -p linux 649553
elsewhere try to keep
/var/log/syslog
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/dmesg
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
and attach here.
Remember to verify that the md5sums of the downloaded and written images matchs.
I don't treat Ubuntu, Launchpad or other persons works with superficiality,
i've take a decision and I can get wrong too, but i'm still convinced that this
is not a bug, and on first I'm a person.
When needed infos will be attached I will provvide to set the status to new.
Thanks

[Bug 626918] Re: Nvidia 173 driver does not work with xserver 1.9

2010-10-05 Thread auxbuss
Thanks for the suggestion, but I really shouldn't have to be using
backports on a system that has always worked. That doesn't solve the
problem.

I have been running 10.10 since it went beta and have solved plenty of
issues since then, as is expected, but this is bonkers.

A mainline aptitude update && aptitude upgrade should _never_ bork a
system to this extent.

I seem to have no option but to reformat, which will take days due to my
set-up, and I have to change distros, as I know Ubuntu is borked. As I
see it, that's about as big as a show-stopper gets.

[Bug 497299] Re: upstart not starting init-scripts (event net-device-up IFACE=lo missing)

2010-10-05 Thread Steve Langasek
wodny,

This bug report tracks the bug where the loopback interface failed to be
brought up due to a missing /etc/network/interfaces. You appear to be
describing a new bug, not previously reported; please open a new bug
report for this. If the problem is a missing event from upstart-udev-
bridge, you should file this new bug report against the upstart package.

> As an additional project I've created a upstart start map generator:
> Results attached.

Interesting! I bet there would be people on ubuntu-devel interested in
knowing about this. BTW, I think the graph needs to express
dependencies in more detail; there's no way to tell from this graph
which dependencies are "or"ed dependencies, and which are "and"ed
dependencies. Even better would be if you could graph the actual events
that trigger at boot time by processing /var/log/syslog... (only works
if you boot with --verbose)

[Bug 625793] Re: Keyboard layout automatically changes + 100% CPU usage [updated]

2010-10-05 Thread Karl Lattimer
I just had the bug appear without actively changing layout, when I
changed windows and the layout should have remained the same.

I'm really not sure as to the cause of it, but I'll keep digging...

OK Omar, again thanks for sorting this out for me. On second thought I could
have reflected a bit more and found the solution...
Anyway I avoid re-installing 10.10 from scratch which is a good thing.
Thanks again.

[Bug 550222] Re: Firefox interface language set to LANG, ignores LANGUAGE

2010-10-05 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
I have modified the GDM patch attached to bug 553162, and now that patch
fixes the problem with programs, e.g. Firefox, that don't recognize
$LANGUAGE. Even if the solution provided as an attachment to this bug
works well, the code in the GDM patch is more elegant IMO.

If you want to deal with this issue, without implementing the bug 553162
patches, and assuming that you want menus and messages translated into
German, you can just add this line to the bottom of your ~/.profile
file:

export LC_MESSAGES="de_DE.utf8"

[Bug 655024] [NEW] Using higher cpu usage

2010-10-05 Thread Taylor "Ripps" LeMasurier-Wren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: transmission

At some point in the last month, Transmission starting using much more
cpu than it used to. It now uses about 15-25% cpu, even when it's not
doing anything. Also, the interface seems to have some pretty serious
lag when scrolling. I don't have these problems with other programs, and
the cpu usage is enough to slow some of my more cpu intensive

cpu increase?

[Bug 655025] [NEW] Gnome proxy setting "Exclusion" seems not correctly handled by Firefox

2010-10-05 Thread Julien
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

configuration
=
Distribution: Ubuntu Lucid Lynx Desktop 32 bits (Linux 2.6.31-20-generic
#58-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 12 05:23:09 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux)
Firefox version: 3.6.10
Gnome Version: 2.32 (Build 25/06/2010)

description
===
When GNOME proxy server is enabled and configured with address exclusions (for
local lan, local servers...), Firefox which is configured to use "proxy server
settings" does not mindful of address exclusions.

reproduce the behavior
==
You need a network with which you can acces directly - without proxy - to an
HTTP server (eg. google.com: 66.249.92.104).
You need also Firefox, Gnome and Wireshark.

* In GNOME:
Menu System \ Settings \ Proxy Server
Select the radio button "Manual configuration of proxy" and check the checkbox
"Use the same proxy server for all protocols"
In edit box HTTP Proxy server, enter a proxy address (does not have to be
correct, eg. http://127.0.0.1/)
In Tab "Ignored Host", add the ip address of your HTTP server (here
66.249.92.104).
In first Tab, Click on button "Apply to the all system"

* In Firefox:
Edit / Settings / Advanced / Network / Connection / Parameters
Select radio button "Use proxy system parameters"

Now run wireshark with gksudo and run capture on outgoing interface.
In Firefox, try to request a random website, not specifically the HTTP server.
=> Firefox try to connect to proxy server
In Firefox, try to request the HTTP server (here http://66.249.92.104/)
=> Firefox try to connect to proxy server and not to web site directly, which
is not excepted behavior.

If you perform exactly the same test with proxy configuration done in Firefox
and not in gnome :
* in Firefox:
Edit / Settings / Advanced / Network / Connection / Parameters and select
"Manual configuration of proxy"
In edit box HTTP Proxy server, enter a proxy address (does not have to be
correct, eg. http://127.0.0.1/)
In edit box "Ignored Host", add the ip address of your HTTP server (here
66.249.92.104).

Retry tests and Firefox handles perfecly exclusion list.

[Bug 640807] Re: automatic xrandr module misconfigures monitors

2010-10-05 Thread Martin Pitt
Bumping to high, since this breaks a lot of people's monitor settings.
The upstream change was introduced after feature freeze, so it appeared
quite late.

Seb and I discussed this in #ubuntu-desktop. We will add a gconf key to
enable the automatic xrandr configuration (if there are no configuration
files), and set that to false in Ubuntu. That patch will be acceptable
for upstream, and it's a very safe solution, in the sense that it is
easy to test, relatively unintrusive, and will change back behaviour to
what we had in all earlier releases and Maverick Beta. With my release
team hat on, I think this is safe enough to push into maverick final
still; this affects the live system, so an SRU would be a lot less
useful.
